Hippiekinkster -> Strange Hobbies (9/8/2008 11:06:15 PM)

I have a thing for riding subways. I just like the whole idea of a subway. You can go down some steps from the street, get on an underground train, and whoosh! You're all the way across the city in a matter of minutes. Is that cool or what?

I haven't ridden all that many of them, and I am kicking myself for not having ridden the Paris Metro when I was there. Sigh. Hopefully, I can take a bunch of money and go from Spain to Russia and ride a bunch of the cool ones. The Moscow system is supposed to have some very cool architecture.

Something I like to do I call "prarie-dogging"; just picking a station at random and going up to street level just to see what's there.

My favorites so far are London's Tube, Berlin's BVV (cool streetcars in the eastern side of the city, starting around Friedrichstraße, Munich's system (the largest public transit system in the world), NY (huge), Mexico City, Montreal (rubber tires, really quiet), Atlanta (OK, I live here. Still, super-clean and safe), and Vienna.

Vancouver's SkyTrain is highly over-rated. So is BART. Chicago and DC have good systems.

I really want to ride a Mag-Lev train, like the one in Shanghai. I want to ride the upside-down monorail in Wuppertal, Germany, too.

OK, what about your weird past-times?

spinninsweetness -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 11:17:59 AM)

I have no weird passtimes, because I am incredibly normal and everything I do is mundane.

However, the tube trains in Belgium are excellent. Only two lines, one across and one up and down, yet still I got lost. Twice! Yay!

Sometimes I like to play 'connect the dots' with beth's freckles using a red 'sharpie'. It's amazing how many places they seem to form 'slave', 'slut', and other nasty words! [sm=lol.gif]

kiwisub12 -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 12:16:41 PM)

I like to buy perfectly good fabric, and cut it up into small irregular shaped pieces and sew them back together!

I call it quilting, my ex called it a mess, and my Sir just sighs. [:)]

Hello Hippie Kinkster,
You are correct, the paris subway is something to be seen!  The stop at the Louvre has actual statues.  One of the things I made sure I did in Paris was ride the subway all over.  In fact, Montmartre was amazing because you have to climb all those danged steps!  I too love riding public trans all over the world.

And bridges, I like to find the bridges and walk over them.

My favorite strange hobby is leaving books all over ... www.bookcrossing.com ... check it out.

well wishes,
sunshine

Now leaving books around is a great hobby!!!!!    Does around the house count? [:D]

subtee -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 1:59:23 PM)

I'm going to make a confession. I'll take you into my confidence and I beg you to give me your compassion and your discretion. My "strange hobby"...well...let's face it, it's rather an obsession, could get me fired. It takes up good portions of my day and not insignificant hours of many evenings. I'm compelled and yet often repelled. I can't speak to the need within me being filled, it's enigmatic even to me! And yet, when I do it at times I am aggravated although often I'm quite stimulated. It seems not to be up to my control; maybe that's my sub nature taking what it needs in a way that the rest of my life lacks. I can be touched and yes, I can be left trembling. It makes me smile; it makes me shake my head ruefully. I'm drawn to do it, nay, I need to do it, but it can be so emptying, one-sided and may one day even give me carpal tunnel syndrome.

Hi, I'm tee and I'm addicted to the CM boards.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 3:40:18 PM)

Oh that is just disgusting    ...      and strangely compelling    .............                 in a really nasty (hide-in-the-bathroom-and-lock-the-door sort of way)

but decent people would never ....................................       but i want to    .............................

but what would a decent person do?

How could i resist the pull......   must resist .......   i'm being pulled to the dark side   ...........              oh goddess help me   ...................

well here i am, now what? * sigh*  i am just not strong enough to resist.

thornhappy -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 4:50:21 PM)

I hunt for things (for the most part) with a GPS receiver, and claim that it's a hobby (geocaching).  Some times I hunt for places and gather information.

impishlilhellcat -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 4:51:43 PM)

That is just too cool.
I joined, I have a couple thousand extra books in my garage and I love that idea.

As to odd or strange hobbies, depends on what falls under the labels.

I have bones and bits of shell (yes the same dead turtle as in the Box Of Ducks thread, Wallace) as well as rocks from around the world. It took me days to make sure they were all safely wrapped and packed away in boxes for my move (and everyone says I'm 'wasting space' hmph).

A bit similar, from what I've heard (I've done earthcaching and geocaching, but not letterboxing.)

purepleasure -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 5:11:41 PM)

I make things from stained glass

thornhappy -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 5:19:01 PM)

Do you do foil or leaded (I've always loved stained glass, but nevah tried it)?

coupleowl -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 5:48:17 PM)

(Him) I collect books. Far too many to count all together but I know that I have 47 all based on Vampires.

I've done both, but I prefer foiling.  I can wrap the pieces and watch tv at the same time.

girlivy -> RE: Strange Hobbies (9/9/2008 6:01:27 PM)
