John McCain goes from open and straight talking to --- following an RNC script.

So I guess this means she must have her lines memorized by now.

SilverMark -> RE: The Straight Jacket Express (9/10/2008 6:45:42 AM)

He is doing what he has to do to get elected...He is a centrist at heart. I will vote for Obama but, if it is McCain that wins I will not feel too badly about it. I liked him in 2000 much better than I do now, but I think the McCain of 2000 is the "real" McCain.
He must appeal to the right to get the job but, at his age i think he is one and done anyway, and will then do as he wants. Just My subjective opinion...if he does win I only hope I am correct!

One can only hope, but what disturbing is that he wanted Lieberman as his VP --- and instead went with Palin after pressures exerted on him from the evangelicals.

Being in a straight-jacket is overall a great metaphor for Republicanism today as from them we see strict discipline, punishments for disloyalty, and a triumph of ideology over facts (abstinence over birth control, abstinence to curb population growth, global warming, tax cuts in the wake of deficits, industry figureheads over experts.) McCain is not going to be able to reverse the culture and demands of this powerful machine.

Nothing says that, after the election, he can't fire Palin, and put Leiberman in her place.

McCain picked Palin over Lieberman because Obama lacked the stones to pick Hillary Clinton to be VP.

When you look at McCain's ads throughout july and august, they plus Obama's own ego and insecurity created an opening for McCain to seize the "change" mantra.  With Hillary not the VP candidate, McCain quite rightly traded the experience card for Obama's "change" card and chose Palin instead of Lieberman.

The media feeding frenzy over Palin and the shovelling of unverified rumor, gossip and in some cases outright lies by sources such as The New York Times and CNN was a bonus.

McCain; "The Straightjacket Express."

Obama; "The Bus to Palookaville."

Actually, he's better off with Biden. If he just wanted to get elected, he could have gone with Hillary.

Are you suggesting there is another motive?  That he actually doesn't want to get elected?  His over confidence, and lack of substance is going to cost him.

It is just that simple.

No, I'm saying that he picked the VP he wanted, not the one other's might have wanted. In terms of manning the VP spot, Biden is actually an upgrade over Hillary.

Biden's an "upgrade" over Hillary?
That's like saying that a broken arm is better than a broken leg.

The funniest thing was watching several Republicans at the convention all say, "I'm taking off my Republican hat and putting on my American hat." (Regarding the impending hurricane and being prepared for it.) The talking points come down from above, and everyone has to follow suit. Its literally like watching puppet theater. Of course the most glaring example of this was the rush to war in IRAQ, where absolutely no Republicans dissented, and where even the CIA and DOD were charged with staying on a political message.

I still remember Dick Cheney's office leaking false information about "aluminum tubes" to the NYT, waiting for it to be printed, and then going onto MEET THE PRESS and quoting the NYT's as an independent source. He literally created his own fiction and tried to upload it onto everyone else as fact.

The Republican party just looks totally un-moored to me; governed by the spin-zone of it top level political operatives as opposed to the actual facts out there in the real world. I just don't understand the undying loyalty of its base, which has seen the US lead into two sink-hole wars, hemorrhage $2 Trillion in New Debt, and sit idly by as the mortgage crisis burgeoned. Where are the protest votes? Where are the calls for reform? Does that all get a free pass in favor of toting anti-abortion, pro-gun, and mythical supply side economics platforms? When will the Fox-News version of reality give way to actual reality?

bipolarber -> RE: The Straight Jacket Express (9/10/2008 5:29:44 PM)

Choosing Biden over Hillary was and is the correct choice. If he had picked Hillary, leading in the long term would have been vastly more difficult, simply because of the power struggle that would have ensued between them. (Plus, there's the baggage of having Bill hanging around the White House, trying to push HIS agaenda as well...) Sure, having Hillary on the ticket would have been a major coup... but it would have had complications.

Look at McCain... he picked a female running mate, and HE is getting overshadowed by his VP choice. (I already saw a PALIN/ McCain '08 bumper sticker... only McCain's name was teeny tiny...) A totally unknown running mate as of two weeks ago, I might add.... how pathetic is THAT? 40 years of service to the Republican party... and he gets overshadowed by a hockey-mom-come-lately in his own bid for the office.

Poor schmuck.

MistressNew -> RE: The Straight Jacket Express (9/10/2008 6:07:52 PM)

Never in history has a major party (or even a minor one) hidden their VP candidate from view.  They really must not trust her.  I guess they think if they let her out of the undisclosed location, she'll say something stupid or off-message.

But it removes any possibility for the American public to have a chance to get to know a major candidate.

When did we become a banana republic?

Do you even read what you are writing?  Yet another example of you not having a grasp on facts or time...

How is she hidden?  Every lead story on Politico is Palin.  She's getting top billing on the Houston Chronicle, and several other newspaper websites.

How is this being "hidden"?

cloudboy -> RE: The Straight Jacket Express (9/10/2008 6:28:26 PM)

I don't know that they are hiding her as much as they are controlling how the campaign will be orchestrated. In terms of Presidential elections, the Republicans are simply better at winning the Presidency. Nothing is beneath them: push polling, distortions, fear mongering, and character assassinations are all front and center in their kitchen cabinet.

Only Clinton slowed them down, but that was aided by Ross Perot splitting the vote.

Has your head been stuck in the sand? She's been kept completely away from the national media and all interview requests have been rejected. Her first one is coming up this weekend.

Thadius -> RE: The Straight Jacket Express (9/10/2008 6:37:44 PM)

Her first two are tomorrow along with full access to her through Sat, less than 2 weeks after the announcement.  Regardless of your political position, it has been smart marketing and has created even more buzz, meaning even more people will watch the interviews when ABC airs them.

The reason this is even being brought up is because of the interest in the woman, and how new she is to the national scene.
