Oh, the mini-Hitler card ... it just had to be played.

Myself, I think you are Carl Rove in disguise ... you know, doing your best to give the GOP votes, they could never earn on their own. [;)]

Let me go check the calendar...yes the year is 2008, not 1908.

Do people still ban library books?
Were the book pornographic?

There's a rumor that as mayor she inquired what library policy was.

The horror.

Either you are willfully ignoring the story or you are.... unable to read?  I can't figure out what would prompt such a response.

She asked about banning books and when she was turned down, SHE FIRED THE LIBRARIAN!!  This all happened within two weeks.  How anyone could defend it, I'll never understand.

You haven't read the entire story or you are... an intellectual bigot?  I know exactly what prompted your response.

From the original Frontiersman article dated Dec. 18, 1996:
quote:

Library Director Mary Ellen Emmons last week said Palin broached the subject with her on two occasions in October - once Palin was elected mayor Oct. 1 but before she took office on Oct. 14, and again in more detail on Monday, Oct. 28. Besides heading the Wasilla City Library, Emmons is also president of the Alaska Library Association. The issue became public last Wednesday, when Palin brought it up during an interview about the now-defunct Liquor task Force. Palin used the library topic as an example of discussions with her department heads about understanding and following administration agendas. Palin said she asked Emmons how she would respond to censorship.

Emmons drew a clear distinction Saturday between the nature of Palin's inquiries and an established book-challenge policy in place in Wasilla, and in most public libraries.

But on Monday, Oct. 28, Emmons said Palin asked her outright if she could live with censorship of library books. This was during a week when Palin was requesting resignations from all the city's department heads as a way of expressing loyalty.

“All questions posed to Wasilla's library director were asked in the context of professionalism regarding the library policy that is in place in our city. Obviously the issue of censorship is a library question... you ask a library director that type of question,” Palin said

“I'm hoping it was just a trial balloon,” Emmons said, “because the free exchange of information is my main job, and I'll fight anyone who tries to interfere with that.”

The timing of the issue comes at a time when Emmons is trying to get the book-challenge policies of the Wasilla Library and of the Palmer City Library in line with the Mat-Su Borough policy, revised in December of last year.

Emmons described the new borough policy as “a very good one.”

It is a step-by-step blueprint of procedures for anyone wanting to challenge the selection and availability of library material, Emmons explained. “it is a good process, and almost all public libraries have one.”

Meanwhile, Emmons said she is working with borough libraries boss Bruce Urban and Palmer Library Director Janice Sanford, in the hope of getting the cities to adopt a book-challenge policy identical to the borough's.

So suggesting that folks are ignoring things or that they are illiterate seems just a tad bit beneath somebody interested in the truth, eh?

MzMia -> RE: Palins book banning (9/10/2008 9:11:10 PM)

I did a google search, this appears to be the list going around.
I selected librarian.net because they seem to be a reputable website FOR
librarians.

Mia,

Why did you swap links?  Didn't the other one support your position?  [8|]

The simple fact is no books were banned, no books were asked to be banned, and if there had been one would have to take the Mrs Emmons at her word that she would have contacted the ACLU.

Claiming she was fired for the topic has also been proven false, as every department head of the city was asked for a resignation during that same week.  So trying to blame it on this particular topic, is a bit of a stretch even for the conspiracy theorists around here.

Know what I mean?

I swapped links because I attempt to always post the MOST reputable link I can find![:D]
Newspapers and well respected sources as much as possible.
YES, the other link DID support the INFORMATION, but THIS link is for librarians.
I have never heard of a bunch of librarians lying to create scandal!
Enjoy the link![;)]

No one enjoys going to public libraries more than Mz.Mia, and Mz.Mia is going to
stand behind the librarians, until further notice!

Summary
We've been flooded for the past few days with queries about dubious Internet postings and mass e-mail messages making claims about McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin. We find that many are completely false, or misleading.
..........
She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.
.....
Analysis
Since Republican presidential nominee John McCain tapped Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate, information about Palin's past has been zipping around the Internet. Several claims are not true, and other rumors are misleading.

MzMia -> RE: Palins book banning (9/10/2008 9:49:51 PM)

lol, keep hope alive.
Maybe she did not attempt to ban all the books on the list,
but Sarah was attempting to do something![;)]

Leave the librarians AND the books in the library alone Sarah, for goodness sakes!

At the time she was asking the questions, the town was in the process of changing its challenge policy for books, they were trying to make it more compatible with the Mat-Su Borough policy.   Wouldn't it be a good idea to know where your head of libraries stands on the "what if a book was brought up for banning or censoring?" question?  In light of the policy changes being put into place?

Screw the politics on this one, the facts don't suggest any sort of record that Palin is pro book banning.  If there was proof I would be leading the charge to hang the woman, as I am against censorship and restrictions on the first amendment.

Books Banned at One Time or Another in the United States
http://www.adlerbooks.com/banned.html

Compare the list at this site with the one Ms. Mia posted. Her list is obviously a cut and paste of a list anyone can find all over the internet.

If Palin had seriously tried to ban any book it would have been all over the statewide news. It's a small state in terms of population and not a lot happens here that is really newsworthy.  I do believe it would have been the number one reported all over the TV and  papers up here and I guarantee she would not have been voted in as governor.

Edited to add that it's my opinion the primary reason she was nominated was because nobody could stand the thought of another 4 years of Murkowski (good riddance to bad rubbish).

A litmus test for loyalty for a Librarian in a town of less than 10,000? I have read the articles and know she DIDN'T ban a single book but the idea of it seems a bit paranoid to Me?

Have to keep an eye on those crazy librarians at all times! We know how wild they can be!

Now, let's not overstate the case. She never advocated BURNING books... only taking them off the shelves for public access... (The thing that bothers me about this, is that most libraries have a "restricted" section, where books of a more adult nature are kept away from the kiddies. She apparently didn't feel that was good enough. She didn't ask for the books to be moved to a restricted state, as a concerned mother. No, she wanted to make sure whatever books she [and her church group] didn't like, weren't available to ANYONE.)

If you're going to remove books from the shelves and "restrict" or hide them, you might as well go ahead and toss 'em on the bonfire.  I am a librarian.  In WV, I was a county library director for nearly 5 years and now, here in AR, I am an assistant manager within a large library system.  At no point have I worked in or been involved with any library that has a "restricted" section.  Personally, I find that idea revolting.  In my opinion, who gives someone the right to decide just what books should be "restricted" to what people?  Nonsense.

As librarians, we are supposed to be the gatekeepers to knowledge, in essence.  A library is a place people should be able to get any and all information and reading material without judgment or censorship.  Now there have to be limits, of course, because we operate on public money.  A subscription to "Hustler" ain't gonna fly.  But taking books and putting them "behind the counter" because there's something sexual in it you think a 12 yr. old shouldn't see is BS.  Buy the books, shelve them and let the patrons choose what they'll check out, regardless of age.  If their parents can't cope with what the kiddies are reading, perhaps they should accompany them to the library and hold their hand while they choose their selections.  Don't whine because your child came in alone, chose something you don't like and then try to "ban" it from everyone's eyes.  I get furious at that line of thinking.

Whether Palin actually demanded that certain titles be banned or not, it says a whole lot to me about a person who even begins to think he/she has the right to decide what others can/should read.  Make your own choices and keep your judgment out of what the rest of us want to read........................luci

Had it been Gov. Palin saying that same obvious thing she'd be labelled a book-burning Nazi

Show me that list of the books she supposedly banned...

You say YOU have to decide what's appropriate, why wouldn't the mayor of a small town have at least a passing interest in how that decision is made.
