Vendaval -> First evacuations order for Hurricane Ike (9/10/2008 12:02:41 PM)

Here comes the next hurricane headed towards Texas -

"Evacuations were starting to lurch into gear Wednesday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said in a statement. "Federal assets will support these evacuations to ensure that everyone can get to safety," the statement stressed.

In Texas' Brazoria County, authorities ordered a mandatory evacuation for the 77541 postal code early Wednesday. The rest of the county was for the moment under voluntary evacuation instructions, they said.

Texas National Guard troops and Air Force personnel from MacDill Air Force Base in Florida have been staging equipment and unloading troops for medical triage in the HALO-Flight hangar at Corpus Christi International Airport since early Tuesday, the Caller-Times newspaper reported.

"C-130 cargo planes have come and gone through the night bringing troops and dropping off equipment, which includes portable air-conditioning systems for patient comfort. The evacuation assistance group will work in tandem with city and county officials to assist the primary evacuation of people with medical needs and disabilities," the daily added.

Ike was grinding toward Texas Wednesday after killing more than 100 people across the Caribbean."

Greetings from Brazoria County, Texas.  Things are heating up here in preparation for Hurricane Ike, the bastard.  As long as Ike doesn't get to a Catagory 5, my home should be ok.  I am worried about our little place on the Intercoastal in Matagorda County -called Sargent Beach.

On the other hand, Hurricane Parties are lots of fun.....I better buy some more vino!

Keep your fingers crossed for us coastal Texans.

Well, from the sites I've been watching it from (I'm in the middle of a roofing project, and even catching the edgoe of it could be a huge pain in the ass for me and the TV station I work for) Ike seems to be staying at catagory 3. They are saying that is should remain so until it hits the coast. But, we've heard this sort of thing before...

hello from corpus christi; home of where the hurricane is supposed to make a direct hit.  we are under voluntary evacuations, except for island residents.

i'm 2 blocks from the gulf and i'm not happy about staying here but guess what?  at this point in time, you can't get a hotel room any closer than oklahoma city, my car won't make it out of town, and i'm too poor to be able to just jump on a plane and get the hell out of dodge(i noticed that FEMA didn't list a charge card number that we could rattle off to get our out of town accomodations paid for) . we aren't elderly or disabled so the emergency center evacuating to san antonio won't take us.  my home is brick, my roof is new and everytime it rains one good rain, our street goes underwater.  my car is too small to transport lumber to board up my windows, and i don't own a saw to cut it with even if i could pack it home; so this should be an interesting ride to say the least.

Hey ladies. Okay as of now, but this thing is acting just like Rita. It would go ashore further south if it'd pick up speed, but since it left Cuba, it's been at a snail's pace, 8 mph. This not only lets it have time to get stronger, but the upper level high may erode, letting it turn up north.

You need to find out where there'll be shelters, ASAP.  I know it sucks, I do know.

Please be safe every one. Its always so hard watching something like this get closer and closer, granted the advance warning is good but its hard for me to watch knowing so many people are there.
Like my owner.

pixidustpet -> RE: First evacuations order for Hurricane Ike (9/10/2008 4:14:41 PM)

the new place in houston is far from the shore and the shipping channel, so we should be fine here.  i dont think we're under danger from flooding, although the apt managers thoughtfully (seriously!) put all the county emergency numbers on the doors today.

i know TheEngineer will be covering and bagging everything in his office tomorrow (gotta love glass buildings) just in case....i have a feeling ike is gonna turn a bit more northwards than corpus christi, just as level indicated.  and get big enough it affects a lot of the coastline.

kitten, battened down

sappatoti -> RE: First evacuations order for Hurricane Ike (9/10/2008 6:18:37 PM)

There's a lot of power to this storm. We've been getting some of the fringe effects from it all day today here in Central FL. This evening, we've even had tornadoes from a couple of the outer bands' squall lines. We even lost a small tree in the back yard... toppled it right over and took out a small fence.

Look on a map and see how far away Orlando is from the center of Ike. That's how far ranging the effects of this storm can be. Take cautions and make preparations people. There's nothing to like about this Ike.

Surata -> RE: First evacuations order for Hurricane Ike (9/10/2008 8:01:11 PM)

I used to live out there and know how bad the storms can get, both hurricanes and thunderstorms, so my thoughts are with everyone along the coastline and further inland.
