This Hurricane Ike is relentless.  In some parts of my area, there are up to 25 ft. surges forecasted.  Houston also has several bayous.  Many of them are expected to outgrow their banks by 10 to 15 feet.  Although Ike is only a Category 2 Hurricane, the high seas, rain fall, and flooding are expected to wipe away many enclaves / neighborhoods / communities here.  I hope people don't lose everything.  I helped where I could....volunteer if we need you.

Even in the New Orleans Yacht harbor the water rose 5 feet by 6 PM Thursday. That's inland, beyond the warning zone. All floodgates in the NOLA region have been shut against rising tides and general flooding. This SOB is HUGE!!!

Not even back from Katrina, hard awful hits to our crops and power just back on today from Gustave- I feel Houston's pain!!! And I have elderly relatives there by the Space Center, worried!

Stay well guarded from tall buildings. The glass blew out of them in Katrina- flew through the air like knives. Don't go outside!

Thoughts very much with Y'all- try to get to a shelter! If not leaving completely.

Yeah, you need to evacuate the areas that they tell you to!
This storm has the potential to be a real killer so go way inland!
Also, they said on the News tonight that the Red Cross is running low on money and may need to feed and house many people for weeks so I'll be making a donation today.

Ike is expected to make Cat 3 before landfall. The overnight tonight is going to be messy -- there's no real way around it. This is going to HURT.

I'm in the Museum district, but we have an interesting apartment complex where most of the openings are facing a central, enclosed courtyard -- so we think we'll be ok... but we probably won't be able to move around much for a couple of days. The latest figures indicate a 25+ foot tsunami on the NE sweep of the storm.. right up the Ship Channel.

This storm is horribly big.  The news up here is saying that it is the biggest storm to hit Houston in 25 years!  I hope everyone has found safe shelter for themselves and their familes.

They just said on the news that this storm is "almost as big as Texas."
And with the high winds there'll be a lot of "missile hazzards" that is stuff flying through the air so remain indoors until it's over.

I just hope the remnants of the storm don't knock the power out when it makes it's way north.  Gustav came through here and knocked down power lines all over town.

South East of Houston got it really bad ... but it's not all that bad here in Katy, just a little to the west. Rain in sheets and high winds. We still have power and internet, obviously.

We have about 60 people staying with us, and so far that will be our biggest after-storm cleanup.

It's probably still going to be a depression, if not a storm, when it gets up to my area tomorrow afternoon. And it's REALLY rare for hurricanes to get very far inland, let alone all the way to Ft Worth/Dallas.

It is a big one for sure.  I don't understand why people don't get out when they have something like this come after them.  I would have been gone a couple of days ago.

Just talked to a friend of mine who chose to stay...he's near ClearLake... I could hear shingles from his roof falling.. I did question his sanity.. then the call dropped, I'm thinking the cell towers are down.

*sigh*

I hope he makes it through the rest of this (the fucking idiot)...I think they're getting the eye now...

It is a horribly big storm. I didnt get a chance to call my Aunt and cousins who live there.. *sighs* at land fall it was a mere 1 MPH from being a cat 3. Scarry shit.

I just dont get why they told folks in Houston to hunker down and not to go anywhere unless in a trailer or the like. Houston is not *that* far from the coast. Not with a storm this size a scope.

Ya'll are in my prayers.

Gwyn

Ron, I don't know about you but I am beginning to feel much more fondly towards our snow and ice storms, extreme temperatures, mosquitoes and the occasional tornado.

The beach, a great place to visit but, I wouldn't want to live there.

No ... my foster parents have a pretty nice home, on a hill with bigger hills all around and surrounded by trees. They are wonderful people that invited all their friends that live in more dangerous areas, to ride it out here. They're native Texans, and just like that I guess. Last night we had a huge burger burn, and emptied the Margarita machine about five times.
