How many hands do you have? [:-] You don't touch the tip or shaft of the needle, which are the parts that penetrate the skin. You don't touch the spot that's being pierced, because you're either stabilizing the skin around it, or clamping it. What are you doing that requires all the glove changes?

fast and general reply... Unless youd like to ruin the flow of the scene for sadistic reasons like the delay will make things hurt worse...keep some more gloves near enough that you can change them if necessary. Piercing should be as clean as possible but its not necessary to do so with sterile technique. The babydom books on play piercing make it sound like you need a surgical tech and a circulating nurse to pierce my inner thigh...which is coated in my own delicious self at the time...but in fact you do not. peace and piercing perse

Really interesting post. I absolutely love play piercing, both giving and taking. I am really into tribal patterns and I recently did a bondage piercing where I needled the girl down the length of both arms, down the thighs and legs to the ankles. I then cross ribboned a full body corset that bondaged her arms by her sides and pinned her legs together. I wish I could put a picture on here. I think its very important to go through the safety elements, be aware of things such as cross contamination, know where to get your supplies and what supplies you need but its also important to be shown, especially once you get onto the bigger piercing cannula. Do you know anyone who can come over and show you the basics? P.S you should be able to obtain sterile corks from the piercing shops. These are good for corking the ends while you work your magic!

You may drop something you need to pick up causing your gloves to become contaminated. You may want to go and have a cigi half way though! or you may just have incredibly sweaty hands and need a change. Always a good idea to buy surgical gloves by the box. If you are doing needles with a partner that you have open sex with then there is no reason to wear gloves. Gloves are in place to protect you and the recipient from surface blood/wounds. They can't protect you from a needle stick, though the rubber will remove a percentage of the blood and they will not protect you from infection any better than well scrubbed hands.

Eh, I use the regular gloves when I play around with needles- not the sterile ones- although the sterile one's are great for looks I think- they fit better, and come up higher. I don't feel comfortable with gloveless needle play- it may have something to do with my Drill Sgt screaming, "WHERE IN &^@&!#$ HELL ARE YOUR &^@&!#$ GLOVES PRIVATE?!?!?!" Scary man, Sgt Dirtyface was. However, I've never forgotten gloves after that instance.

Please please please dont mark the container "medical waste" and then set it loose on the world via your trashcan.... Contact your local needle exchange services...call your own personal MD's office and get friendly with a nurse there...ask at your local pharmacy about buying a sharps container and work out a fee for exchanging it when full. While im on the subject, if you still get your sodas in those awful plastic ring/holder thingies...cut them before throwing them away so the birdies dont strangle.

A sharps bin is a particular colour (yellow in the UK) All yellow bins, bags, containers are classed as contaminated waste products and need to be incinerated. Anything that is not in a yellow container could, god forbid, end up in general waste. Contaminated needles in general waste is highly dangerous and if we can't appreciate the hazards it could cause then clearly we shouldn't be playing around with needles.

I had not had a chance to read this for a while, and it seems it has become a wealth of education recently. I work for a pharmacy, so disposal of needles and the like is no problem, nor is obtaining a sharps container. I can get gloves and surgical soaps and cleansers (Hibicleanse was suggested for cleaning the area ) but the needles and kits are my main concern equipmentwise. Unfortunately, I do not know anyone who is an experienced needle top to walk me through a first time. I am thinking a tomato is my first time best bet. I wont touch Fox until I am confident I am doing it well, and even then it will be one needle in somewhere inconspicuous and preferably not too painful for the first time. Angel has put the kibosh on piercing Silk for the time being, but if I do decide to do a semi-permanent piercing on Fox, it would definitely be with captive ball rings. I dont have time to check all the links now, but I'll be getting on that. DV

or you could follow the example of a piercing top that I know, love, adore and trust implicitly, and just pop two 18 gauge needles in the outer portion of my upper arm while I was driving. Although, we were stopped at a stop light, so it must have been okay right??? Add to that the fact that I didn't even notive I'd been pierced until about 10 minutes later when she asked me for the tape from my car's first aid kit so she could cover the tips while we went out for dinner with friends. Must say it was pretty fun. And honestly I didn't feel a thing. I thought she was just grabbing and twisting my flesh as usual.

DV, a ripe banana is very similar to human skin. When doctors learn to suture they often cut a banana skin (with the banana still inside) then suture it together. Think on... as long as you can pinch the skin then you should be fine to pierce that area. Balls are very easy to pierce as there tends to be lots of loose flesh. The hardest thing to get used to when you start piercing is not getting your fingers in the way, especially when your working with a number of needles. Thats why I tend to cork the ends once through. The other thing to keep in mind is, after you remove them (if you do) don't be tempted to clean the area with anything more than a surgiwipe or clean swab. Puncture wounds are deep and its easy to contaminate them. Letting them bleed is not only awesome [:-] but self cleaning. If you get a bleeder (even more awesome[:D]) don't get all excited like me but put a swab the firm thumb pressure on for a minute and it will stop.
