hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/12/2008 8:04:36 PM)

Started with the weight specialist on July 15th, and weighed 232.  I've been getting weighed weekly at the doc's office, and remeasured once a month.  In the 2 months that I've been going to the specialist, I've gone on a very restricted diet. I've cut sodas completely out (they were a Serious problem for me - we're talkin 6lts a day most days - I was beginning to feel solely responcible for the Coca Cola company's quarterly profits).  Meals are almost exclusively lean meats and green veggies.  No starch, no sugar, no fats that aren't a natural part of the portions of lean meat.  I've also started a fairly strenuous (for Me lol) work out regimen at the gym.  3 days a week for water aerobics and cardio, 2 days a week cardio and strength training (alternating upper and lower body.)   Now that I've lost enough to start Feeling a significant difference (the B12 shot once a week don't hurt LOL) I plan to start doing a daily 45 minute walking session in my neighborhood to increase the amount of exercise that I'm getting even further.

As of when I went for my weekly weigh in yesterday ................ I'm down from 232 to 198, have lost 7 inches in my waist, 2 1/2 inches in my thigh, 3 inches in my hips, and 1 1/2 inches off my upper arms.  The weight loss itself has slowed down since I started working out, but the inches lost on any given week have increased significantly.  That difference came as no surprise to me - muscle mass is denser than fat - it takes up a lot less space, but weighs significantly more in the Same Amount of space.  Since muscle actually burns more calories, the leaner you become the more efficiently your body uses the fuel you give it.  Ultimate goal is to loose 100lbs total - or nearly half my body mass - and get down to the 135 that I weighed prior to children.

As for smoking... eh.... I tried to quit once.  It was the worst 10 minutes of my life, and I nearly killed 3 people.  Trust me, the world is NOT READY for me to try and quit smoking - it would be more dangerous (for the Rest of the planet) than starting World War 3.

I've started the weight loss thing too.  I'm down 21 lbs since July 1st (175 to 154), and all it took was removing the stress element from my life.  Now that I've leveled off at 154, I actually need to start exercising.  Pooh.

[sm=cheering.gif]  Congrats to you. Keep up the good work to your goals.  [sm=cheerleader.gif]
I am starting on my health journey, I can't handle being 365# anymore. Although  I have come to like myself now at this weight, thanks to some great people. But I want to be healthier. My first 2 goals are to walk for 30 min per day and to stop eating simple sugar/starches. (I seem to be addicted to/crave them). So that is Step #1 for me. Continued success to those who have started their journeys.

Absolutely wonderful! Any exercise is better than no exercise. I had to start with walking alone myself. I remember walking a mile to begin with and it being soooo hard. Now, I've worked up to much more. It just takes time and patience. You should be proud of yourself for starting and even more so when you turn it into a lifestyle choice instead of a "diet"...such an ichy word.

Good for you and good luck. [:D]

Heh, the first time I tried walking I made it about a quarter mile, got a really painful cramp in the side of my calf and had to hobble back home.

Hey,

This is for all you ladies and gentlemen who are currently striving to live an all around healthier lifestyle. Working on losing those last few pounds? Wonderful, post your goals and updates here. Trying to quit smoking or whatever it may be that you need to give up? Lovely, bring it all here.

As for me:

Start weight on July 13, 2008 - 290 pounds
Current weight as of my Friday weigh-in today - 271 pounds.

Smoking - Well, I've tried quitting once before and it didn't turn out very well. However, they say that with things like losing weight and quitting addictions, it can take quite a few tries before you actually stick with it. So, here's to an attempt (along with determination) within the next couple of days.

Note, this is all about health. Please don't encourage starvation, fad diets, quick fixes that don't last, etc.

I gave a great deal of consideration to this question back in 1998, and after very careful thought....it occurred to me that without my entire lack of care for my health or future, insurance companies would have no ability to generate income.

Then Doctors.  Follow on was obviously lawyers.  If I smoked but claimed later to not understand, who would be there for me?

Lawyers.

Today, thanks to me (and I'm sure, several other selfless folks like myself), several classifications of legal, medical and like groups....have a job.

(It's my way of giving back).

Gosh, I can relate to that. Heh, now my problem is upping the weight I lift while dealing with increasing joint pain as a result.

igor2003 -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/12/2008 10:23:23 PM)

Congratulations to all who have had success in their health goals.  I know from first hand experience that making those life-changing improvements is rarely easy and almost never quick.

Personally, I have quit smoking three different times using three different methods.  The first time I quit cold turkey and didn't smoke for 13 years (after smoking for 5 years), but  I had to carry cigarettes with me for the first 2 weeks so that I knew I was quitting because I wanted to quit...not just because there were no cigaretts around.  The second time I quit was through hypnosis, but that only lasted four months, so maybe I didn't really quit that time.  The last time I used the patch, but had to do my own program.  That was about 10 years ago and still going good.

Now I have to do something about my weight, and that is proving to be MUCH more difficult than quitting smoking!  Due to back problems I can't walk extensively or do any high impact kind of exercise that increases joint stress, but now that the weather is cooling off I'm hoping to get back into bicycling again.  I know that swimming would be great, but can't afford to join a gym right now.  I HAVE started eating more fruit and veggies.

Anyway, for all those that have had success in their endeavors, keep up the good work!  And for those that are struggling, don't give up.  And it may be easier to approach your particular problem form a different angle.  Just keep after it.

JerryFrankster -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/12/2008 10:57:10 PM)

Weight training is definitely a good idea since the increased muscle burns more fat even when you're not exercising, but yeah, it can be rough on the joints.

What kinds of weight training exercises are you doing?

Sir and I are two weeks into the quitting smoking thing (and it's amazing but we haven't killed each other yet!). Whenever I get a craving for one I drink an 8 ounce glass of water. I made sure that there are no salty snack foods or sweets in the house (other than some hard candies which also help a little). No foods outside meal times unless they are fresh fruit or veggies. I'm bound and determined I'm not going to gain that "average" 7 lbs that comes with quitting. So far, so good. I'm also taking up belly dancing.

This is a good time of year for me to do this because it's long enough before all the Holiday cooking and entertaining. Also, it's the season that I am most active. I'm out in the woods alot at this time of year gearing up for hunting season, so lots of hiking.
Where is the mistoferin I know and what have you done with her...lol. Seriously....good luck!

TwistedLady -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/13/2008 9:46:25 AM)

Mostly compound exercises with a few isolated thrown in to complete the full body workout. I do three total body workouts a week. As for the type of exercises, squats, lunges, bench presses, deadlifts, cleans, snatches, then a few isolated such as curls, good mornings, crunches, you get the general idea. Of course, I'm not lifting very high weights as of yet. 40 pound squats and good mornings kicked my behind yesterday. But, I'm working up slowly.

JerryFrankster -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/13/2008 2:18:07 PM)

You definitely don't want to push your luck with those good mornings, very easy to give yourself a serious back injury. I was doing them for a while without any adult supervision, and finally decided to stop, partly because I wasn't sure if I was doing it right, and partly because I wasn't quite flexible enough to hold the bar behind my head.

Do you have a trainer?

TwistedLady -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/13/2008 3:59:44 PM)

Yeah, you could seriously hurt your back doing really any of the big compound exercises. I make certain I keep my back straight and use as good form as possible. I've done a ton of research on about everything that has to do with fitness. So, I'm pretty sure I'm, at least, protecting my back. If you want to learn how to do them properly, there are lots of YouTube videos showing them done correctly. As for a personal trainer, I'm a single mom. There's no way I can afford that luxury, heh. I just do the best that I can with them. For instance, I can't go down to parallel with my squats yet, so I go down as far as possible and work on getting lower each week.

Oh, and as a side note, I don't use a bar at the moment. I don't have one. I simply use dumbbells and add weight plates as needed. They also seem to be much easier to control as opposed to having this huge barbell sitting on my shoulders. I'm sure as I work my way up to heavier weights, I'll want to use a barbell though. As a beginner, I'm just working on learning correct form.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/13/2008 6:11:58 PM)

That injury possibility is why I like the fact that I have a personal trainer on tap at the gym - as part of the membership price where I got a gym membership!  The trainers there are all certified and very professional, so it makes it much easier to be certain that the various exercises and equipment are being utilized properly.

daddysliloneds -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/13/2008 9:50:55 PM)

i'm going into my second week of trying to quit smoking and it's not going so good.  prior attempts and methods to assist me in quitting didn't work.

i was told that 'chantix' is like the morphine for cigarette smokers, so i doled out the $116 for the first month supply and haven't managed to even reduce my smoking by one cigarette a day.  i'm seriously bummed, though i'm still taking the shit amd paying for the cigarettes, which isn't so hot on my pocket book either...

i HATE being held hostage by my own addiction!!!!!!!!!

monywildcat -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/14/2008 1:43:59 AM)

Congrats to all of you on your successes!  Very very awesome.

I have cut out all the energy drinks (Full Throttle and NOS are my serious vices) and replaced them with my previous morning coffee, splenda and low-fat creamer.  It's been a week, and I'm already feeling better.  And made sure I only had one cuppa joe in the morning.  Increased the water.  When I do imbibe, its light beer only, and my all-time fave vodka, and this has helped as well.  My pants are fitting better again. [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m9.gif[/image]

Also, I have found that having a friend join you in your lose weight/quit smoking/live better endeavor is always helpful.  We provide support, and give one another a swift kick in the ass when we start slacking.  Which we have done, damn this awful dreary weather we have been having!  It makes us want to hibernate.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Healthier Living, Losing Weight, Quitting Smoking - All That Goes Here (9/14/2008 4:48:09 AM)

I'm four days into a thirty day full body detox/ juice fast/ raw food diet.  I started gearing up for this by switching to raw and eliminating alcohol about two weeks ago.  I lost about five pounds just doing that.  I'm down eight pounds total so far.  On top of that I jog about three days a week and I'm in the midst of cutting, splitting and stacking wood for the winter...which has turned out to be a great workout.
