So, what is happening with the UK vehicle road tax, I hear there are proposed changes soon to be brought in, when is this happening and anyone know the proposed charges ?

I ask as I have made the decision to purchase an old banger as public transport is too expensive to use on a daily basis. I am sort of looking out for a Suzuki SJ410, yes, a sub one litre engine, but low power is all I need and it being a rugged little machine with no electronics, I can keep costs down by doing my own repairs. Does anyone know of any other low power bangers that are reasonably reliable ?

I was going to get a motorcycle, but that is far too dangerous on UK roads, a nasty smash recently confirmed that , the biker was wearing all the dayglo gear and the car that hit him did'nt see him, no crumple zones on bikes except for the rider.

Worse than that have you heard the one about the photo driving licences? They need to be replaced every 10 years I'm glad I passed my test before they introduced them.

£17 every ten years, rip off Britain, the administrative costs of changing a photo can't cost that much? Someone to look at the computer files = 5 minutes, someone to print off a new one = 5 minutes, postage stamp.

If you fail to send it back after ten years you can be charged a fine of £1000 and most people don’t even know they expire.

+y

A lot of people now don't do the legal stuff with cars as it is just too expensive and that is without the credit crunch. Personally, I have to, insurance, that is there for harm I might do to someone else.Tax, I have to have, as I cannot deal with parking up somewhere and worrying if the thing has been towed away because of no tax. Something they seem to be getting shit hot on in this country, tax evasion with cars, but instead of doing something realistic about it, they like to fine and imprison people.

Went past a camera which was checking on the tax discs of cars. Waht I didn't see was whether they had cars to then go and stop tax evaders or were going to send fines to the addresses of the nuber plates ............ not of course that they are likely to have the wrng number plate !!!

tecknically I dont have 1 vehicle on the road.  I use it for hauling.   Which is infrequent. When it is done- it will go to a junk yard.

fees have creaped up in the past 20 years.

but other states are worse.

PA now wont let tags go to the junk yard. They must be sent back to the state.  If not a $50 fee is attached to the drivers license.

tho-  I purposely kept a plate planning to just pay it... it was never assessed.

a 1 square in renewal sticker is all that makes the plate valid. so if there is none - it must be a plate that doesnt expire.   sorta like forigne consulate plates.   [or a batswana plate... how would they even run that??]

But then I could grab a plate from Illinios or elsewhere...  heck they sell them at flea markets..

anyhow the ticket would be $80 if I get caught.... so like much of life-- it is a calcualted gamble...

You can't avoid the DVLA database in the UK all you can do is declare off road status but they'll spot you sooner or later with their police licence plate recognition technology. All you have to do is pass a police car fitted with it and it will automatically alert them.
If you don't pay you automatically get sent a fine.
