suednym -> Help with Circulation, please. (9/13/2008 6:48:56 PM)

After being bound last night, I began struggling.  This tightened the ropes, and my left wrist became too tight.  I was released as soon as I noticed my hand becoming slightly numb.

I have been massaging the side of my hand, and the thumb all day, but it has not completely returned to normal.  I thank you for any insight you can provide.

Tell the person you are playing with to get some pointers from more experienced people in rope play. There are ways to tie someone up that wont cause that problem. If it happens again, I would seriously consider whether this person is ready to be playing with others when rope is involved.

If your hand isnt feeling better by monday..go see the doctor. Could be very minor but its never a bad idea to be sure. In the meantime..ice and tylenol may deal with pain and any swelling that may be involved.

Good luck to you~

Not that I have any formal medical training at all .. but I would try ibuprophen.  It's an anti-inflammatory.   Might do better than the tylenol.   But then as others have said, if it's not better, see a doctor.   And get some pointers on the rope tying.

Did the same thing to my hand when i was starting in this life. It took about 3 months for the feeling to come back in my thumb.
My Sir bought suspension cuffs to prevent it from happening again - and scolded me for not telling him sooner. [:o]

It takes a long time for nerves to heal.

hmmmm...not good.  You could have pinched the nerves, it dowsn't take long to injure them, and once you feel numbness, it may be too late.....and the carpal tunnel is also right there.  Is any numbness a feeling of not being able to feel, or is it more like a tingle?  I have carpal tunnel syndrome, so I don't allow anyone to use rope on my wrists.....it has to be a solid, forgiving restraint...preferably leather.  If you should notice sharp, shooting pains in your fingers, you can bet you've done something to the carpal tunnel area.  Don't wait for an extended period of time....if the ibuprofen isn't cutting it, see your doc.  Unfortuantely, there's not a lot that can be done if you've pinched any nerves....it's a "time will heal it thing".  And I agree......if one doesn't know the proper techniques when using rope, to include CHECKING on the extremities, then don't let them use it on you.

OP, if   you have problems, work them out.   it might seem hard at fiirst, but it's worth it.  talk to "him", tell him what you are going through.

thanks, all.  fortunately, it is a pins and needles kind of thing.  and there is not pain involved.  and, yes, communication is vital.

christine, i always love your quotes.

DesFIP -> RE: Help with Circulation, please. (9/13/2008 9:09:11 PM)

It will probably wear off in a day or two. I've got one wrist that goes numb very easily, I think the nerve is closer to the surface than normal.

We have a safe gesture to handle this. If I open and close the fist slowly, he knows that hand is going numb and he immediately adjusts it. If I open and close both fists rapidly, that means the problem is something else and he removes the gag so I can explain.

Some people prefer to hold a clicker in their hand to attract the top's notice immediately from the sound, you may want to try that instead.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Help with Circulation, please. (9/13/2008 10:01:10 PM)

Asprin thins your blood and if it were a circulation problem, it would help.  You shouldn't be having circulation problems after the ropes were removed.  Unless you have extreme swelling, you most likely have a pinched nerve.

Lynnxz -> RE: Help with Circulation, please. (9/13/2008 10:08:57 PM)

It's nerve damage. I'd agree with getting either some supension cuffs (Sooo nice), or asking him if he could learn to tie differently. I'm horrible with ropes, or I'd give you a link to what C uses... but I haven't the slightest idea what it's called.

With any luck, the damage should heal soon.

zakkan -> RE: Help with Circulation, please. (9/13/2008 10:14:28 PM)

If it doesn't wear off soon, get some vitamin B. It helps with the nerves. However, you might want to see a doctor if its still there after a few weeks. Nerve injuries take a long time to heal completely, and its a lot cheaper to get the vitamins from the doctor than to buy it from the pharmacy [8D]
