Holly!

Stop giving my mom cooking lessons!

Last night we were cooking pasta and chicken together, she missed me or sumat, and it was a grand ol' time...
Until the chicken finished cooking. She removed the chicken from the pan and dumped the pasta sauce into the HOT dish coated with BUBBLING oil.

...The sauce EXPLODED. Shot all over her and me. The walls were covered... The calendar...

It was fucking hilarious.

She kept trying to clean it up while it was still exploding!

Yeah... She was grateful she was wearing her boyfriend's sweatshirt at the time...

And me? I bolted over the couch the second hot sauce hit my neck; ouch.

After the first few seconds of panic, it really was hilarious.

"Why doesn't he have a lid!? Where's a lid? OW! Where's a lid!?" **Mom grabs pizza pan and slams it onto the bubbling sauce**

..."You missed a spot over there Mom, on the mirror. Yeah, the whole mirror, Mom."

She's awesome.

Sometimes I forget what a goober she can be. I'm glad we get along like best friends enough to make fun of each other. I'm sure if the food hadn't been boiling hot, we'd have started throwing it at each other.

...I'da made her clean that up too.

I remember being about eleven or twelve and my dad was fixing s'ghettis.  He decided that the sauce was not thinck enough so he was going to add corn starch.  Okay fine.  When he got ready to put it directly into the sauce, I said, "Dad, you can't do it that way.  You have to mix it with water."  Oh, no I don't blah blah blah.  "No Dad, you really have to mix it with water first."  Who is cooking this.  It will be fine.

In goes the corn starch.

Now class. . . can anyone tell me what happened?

That is right.  Nice gluey balls of sauce covered corn starch.

My dad's response to me.

Through gritted teeth.

"Don't.  Say.  A.  Word."

This is why, when we want to thicken something, we use Hungry Jack mashed potato mix stuff.

Now, I would my ass off.  At age eleven or twelve, that would not have been a good idea.

Even at that age I had a sense of self-preservation.  I left the kitchen as my dad was trying to break up the lumps with a fork.

*****Funny thing, is that if he had let it simmer, it would have thickened by itself.

That's ok Aylee...I just remembered one of my cooking bloopers........I was going to make gravy for the Thanksgiving turkey.....I got some of the juice from the pan, put it in one of those neat tupperware shakers, added the corn starch, put the top on it, and started shaking...after about 5 shakes, the lid blew off cuz the heat from the juice didn't have anywhere to expand to......I had half shaken gravy all over me, the walls, the stove top....the floor.....at least the dog took care of that mess.....so now, I use a can of cold chicken broth and corn starch and mix that into the drippings...works just fine!

My dad was the cook in the family, but that's cuz he got home first.....my mom did the cooking on weekends, and we always had a big Sunday meal.  My mom was the canning maven....every fall she'd do up tomatoes and tomato sauce....YUMMMY!!!!, all the local fruits, jams, dilly beans, sweet, bread and butter and dill pickles....OMG..that really stunk the house up when she left them in the crocks to pickle  , and she'd freeze corn, apples, heck, she'd lay in a whole winter's worth of food!  When I went off to college, I'd do my grocery shopping in the basement......Her tomato sauce was better than anything on the market then or today.....my roomies loved it!

And holly, gimme a bowl of that chili......if I can eat my dad's, yours is a cake walk!!!!!  His will strip the enamel off the inside of the pot!!!!
