I can proudly declare that, I WILL DO MY PART TO SEE THAT GLOBAL WARMING CONTINUES BY EATING MORE MEAT.  The sham of it all is enough to choke a cow.[8|]

See, and folks think I am a radical.  Glad to know that I am in the mainstream.

Steaks, roasts, burger, chops and ribs for everybody.  Besides, if we get everybody to be obese wouldn't that make fighting wars a bit more difficult?

Always a method to the madness.

What this will probably lead to is a bunch of fat gits flying unmanned spy planes into Pakistan to slaughter innocent families whilst not respecting the sovereignty of Pakistan’s borders.

Remote control warfare is all the rage these days. Straight from Xbox to military, no special training or sacrifice required.

Except for the sacrifice of those that get bombed. But they're just collateral damage, so I suppose we can always pray for them.

Its about time we started calling collateral damage what it is, ie. murder.

Funny you weren't willing to describe it as that a few weeks back when we were discussing a certain "peace keeping" effort over in Eastern Europe.

Just sayin.

Feel free, you are already managing to make Bush look like a dangerous radical green. Scientists already think the destruction of the rain forests are effecting north American rainfall, hence the droughts in certain areas. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't but if they are, beef will be off the menu for a long time to come.

Don't worry the evil Bush will be out of office in 4 months and a week.  However, I will be around for much longer than that, and doing my part to prevent the deer from defoliating the forests around here...

I assume this an attempt at comedy based on inherent contradiction? How do you possibly get within the same zip code of this assertion from the global climate change debate?

As for the overall theme of this thread- there is some truth to the idea that eating less meat is easier on the planet, as a whole- although the direct impact of this on the climate system is dubious at best. Every time you move up a level on a food chain (ie, from crops to cows) there's about a 90% loss of biomass. Therefore, it's possible to produce a lot more food from plants than from animals.

This becomes obvious if looked at intuitively- there's a reason that protein intake is correlated with income- it's energetically (and therefore economically) much easier to support a large population on simple staple crops (grains/rice/potatoes). This is also the reason that primary consumers (herbivores) are used as food sources, while secondary consumers (carnivores) are not (at least terrestrial ones).

All of that said, cows are tasty animals, and I don't plan to give them up any time soon. On the list of global environmental problems, this one's pretty near the bottom.

In 1900 the deer population in the US was about 500,000.

Today it is about 30 million............... yet they aren't calling for more hunters....... interesting

Jeff

Actually, at least in NYS, they issue more hunting permits than past, so yes, they ARE calling for more hunters.

There are far easier ways to break legs such as extreme commuting; a little known sport in the UK where you walk to work and hope some arsehole cyclist doesn't flatten you.

The problem isn't the cows, anyway. The problem is that we have 6 billion people on this planet, and the systems of agriculture and waste disposal that we have are creaking under the strain of us all. But I wouldn't worry about it. Nature tends to have systems for correcting an overpopulation of one animal population or another. So far, we've been clever enough to still continue our unchecked growth... but it seems that now mother nature is upping the stakes.

I have faith in the human animal that it is stupid enough to not do anything until it's too late, and nature will handle the problem for us. Wars, famine, disease... all will combine to take us down a few pegs. Maybe after it gets ugly for those who survive, things will come back... only a little saner.

maybe not cows per se, but anthropogenic emissions:
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v443/n7110/abs/nature05132.html
note decreases in wetlands emissions (anaerobic decomposition)(see:  BOD; biological oxygen demand testing)masked by increases in anthropogenic sources.

"Methane is emitted from a variety of both human-related (anthropogenic) and natural sources. Human-related activities include fossil fuel production, animal husbandry (enteric fermentation in livestock and manure management), rice cultivation, biomass burning, and waste management. These activities release significant quantities of methane to the atmosphere. It is estimated that 60% of global methane emissions are related to human-related activities (IPCC, 2001c). Natural sources of methane include wetlands, gas hydrates, permafrost, termites, oceans, freshwater bodies, non-wetland soils, and other sources such as wildfires."
http://www.epa.gov/methane/sources.html

Termites contribute approx. 5% of annual CH4 emmisions:

I love science. The beauty of science is that it shows the ignorant foolishness of the scoffers, who never seem to have any proof to the contrary, for anything. Not GCC, not Evolution, not anything. NO PROOF WHATSOEVER. I mock them. Hahaha! Look how dumb the scoffers are, ma! Hahahaha! [8D]

Extreme heat could screw many of the world's poor:
"The study, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, found that extreme temperatures will rise two or three times faster than average temperatures. So in Europe, peak highs could go from a sweltering 100 degrees up to 110 or 115 degrees. There's even a chance the mercury could hit Sahara-style highs of 120 degrees.
Temperatures in the 120s could also strike Australia and the American Midwest, according to the study, which used climate-change models developed for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change."

But perhaps we should be looking elsewhere for a cause of change, interesting that the Martian ice caps are melting too and as far as science is concerned, there is no devasting life forms on that planet. The common factor there, is the sun, a ball of burning gas we really do not know enough about to make judgements.

Mar's ice caps are melting because the planet's orbital inclination is allowing it to pick up more sun than usual (mars, like earth, processes around the poles (wobbles in its orbit).)  We get summer when the N pole leans towards the sun; that angle is not the same every year.  Some years bigger, some smaller.

In other words, it's coincidence, due to a bit of orbital physics.

And I guess Greenland and Iceland were named out of humor? Scientists at an observatory in Tuscon, AZ have documented the temperature changes on Neptune since the '70's . That temperature chart looks amazingly similar to Earth's. The Earth has been cooling for roughly 10 years now, ask the Germans. The sun is cooler at present. Greenhouse emissions continue to rise. HMMMMM! Oh, make my steak medium well and with a plat of blue cheese.

Group: Global warming could cost Ohio its buckeyes

It's not the best-researched global-warming theory, but it could be the most horrifying to certain fans of college football: Environmentalists said Friday that climate change might push the growing range of Ohio's iconic buckeye tree out of the state, leaving it for archrival Michigan.

Save The Buckeye, a coalition of environmental activists and outdoor enthusiasts, has a billboard in Columbus warning about the fate of the buckeye tree, and backers plan to hold rallies during football tailgating events. They're hoping to channel Ohio pride into environmental awareness and action.

Are you talking about the Georgian military murdering Russian citizens which provoked the Russian response? If you have been reading my responses in other threads I stated, if Georgians don't want to be killed, don't kill Russians in the first place.

The US politicians seems to be the only politicians in the western world that don't accept that it was a Georgian attack on Russian civilians that started the conflict.
