Just to say that unless we've lived through and experienced both of them - The only objective comparison that can be made is one based on specific types of numerical data and percentages. And even that can't happen until after the eleventh hour has come and gone

Edited to add, where in Europe do they have summers like Death Valley or Phoenix, or winters like Iowa or Minnesota or Wyoming...

Ever been to Greece in the middle of July? Have you tried Sevilla around the month of August? And Moscow's dead refreshing in winter.

Probably the biggest threat to the economy is rising fuel prices which are in turn causing inflation...

And Republicans have been pushing hard to open up more areas for drilling for years and years, but have been meeting stiff resistance from environmental extremists (aka the Democrats).

But now, I see that Pelosi has finally buckled under GOP pressure to allow a vote on offshore drilling... maybe after the Dems start seeing the disastrous results of their policies taking their toll on the poorest among us we can start turning this thing around.

The housing crisis to me means that houses are a little more affordable for first time buyers. Yesterday's stock decline cost me 10% of my 401k (yawn) but I'm in it for the long term...

What this country really needs is energy and the question is, have the Democrats really learned their lesson, or are they just paying lip service to this country's needs prior to an election.

Being bias in favor of your party is one thing, you're bordering on laughable.

The housing crisis is a good thing because houses have lost value and are now affordable?

Your 401k lost ten grand but that's no big deal ?

There are a lot of reasons Americans use more energy that Europeans or the Japanese. We have harsher climates, requiring more HVAC. We're a bigger country, requiring more transportation. And we produce more, even if in SOME cases another country MAY be a little more efficient.

But this whole, "America uses too much energy" hijack is just one more red herring. Regardless of how much energy we use compared to Switzerland, that is what the economy runs on - energy. The Left wants to cut it out from under us, hurting business, hurting the poor, hurting the sick, hurting the elderly, and hurting families with children...

Say we use too much. Fine - just don't come crying to me when you cripple our economy in order to please your friends across the pond.

In case you missed it, The EU in some cases exceeds the US in productivity per hour worked despite using less energy.

We are bigger?  Compared to all of Europe?

We have a harsher climate?  Time to dig into those old geography textbooks, huh?

Why don't we just drill here, and drill now.

Oh, wait - I see that Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama have finally admitted that Bush was right and that they were wrong all along, and have finally agreed to look at allowing Americans to try to produce more oil.

Bush and the GOP have wanted this for years and years but the Domocrats have dragged their feet, waiting until everyone feels the pain at the pump and the economy begins to stumble...

Put the blame squarely where it belongs...

Yes, they caved in to political pressure from people who have no clue what they're talking about so they don't get voted out by people who have no clue what they are talking about.

The domestic drilling being proposed will account for a small fraction of our consumption and won't be available for at least ten years.

Yet the Republicans have convinced all the people who have no clue what they're talking about that it will bring back $1.85 per gallon gas, we'll all be driving Hummers, peace and prosperity will reign, the birds will sing, the flowers will bloom and we won't have a care in the world.

Didn't mean to 'slap you around', sorry if it came across that way. Even 's' types can be bossy at times, I suppose  .

Hehe, no, no reason to be sorry kittin.  Everyone needs their head pulled from their ass sometimes.  I'm just glad I'm able to recognize those times and thank you for doing so. ;)

10% isn't necessarily ten grand. You might want to try reading that again...

Average summer highs in Athens are 28 C

Average summer highs in Pheonix are 40.5 C

Average summer high in Sevilla is about 26 C

And if we're going to include Russia and Eastern Europe in this hijack I'll have to contest the assertion that "European" energy efficiency is all that in comparison to the United States.

I stand corrected.

Doesn't alter my point though.

Your partisanship has given you blinders.  If this were a Democratic administration and these things were happening you would be bitching up a storm, not saying "yawn", oh well, those are the breaks.

Western Europe, which is what the initial assertion involved, yes.

Also, because of the Iron Curtain days, most Americans my age are conditioned to think of Western Europe as "Europe" and Eastern Europe as "The Eastern Block" or Soviet "Satellite States".

So sue me.

There's an upside to lower housing prices, absolutely. If you're going to deny that then your biases are the laughable ones, friend!~

So you're saying that the Democrats in Congress are spineless and the constituents who send them there are idiots.

Your words, not mine...

That's what they said ten years ago.

AND AGAIN,  If only the Democrats were JUST blocking new oil production... but you can't name any significant energy systems or proposals that Democrats are willing to support. (Wind and solar isn't enough).

Demonizing SUVs won't keep Grandma warm this winter, and it won't keep American manufacturing in business. And some people require SUVs for their work or their lifestyle, neither of which do  I want my government controlling

Choke off energy and we will be forced into a recession by definition - we'll have to slow growth. But open the energy spigots and you'll fuel growth.

Obama represents recession, Republicans represent growth.

The choice is a no brainer!

Well Utopian, I was not around during slavery or on the Titanic either.
I grew up with parents that were born in the 30s, I have talked to people
that lived during it, and I have studied the Great Depression.

What does the fact that we didn't live through the LAST depression, have to do
with the next potential depression?
This is not about comparing the last depression to the next depression.
The point is shit is bad, and getting worse.
If I am starving, I am not going to spend a lot of time wondering about people
that have already starved to death, I am going to try to get some food.
I don't need to spend hours comparing how bad things were then, to how bad
things are now.

The point of my thread is that almost everyone is finally admitting that we are in bad
shape, and the situation is not getting better.

**I was fucking tired of the LIES {we are not in a recession, we are not in a depression,
things will be okay real soon!}.  I have been listening to that LIE for over a year.
It has taken major economy ass kicking for the truth to be told to Joe Public.

Mz Mia, if you were starving all I'd have to do to make you my "Bitch" would be to wave a can of creamed CORN in front of you?
"Ho, Ho, Ho!"

How did I miss this pearl of wisdom?

All you would offer me is a can or creamed corn?
No shrimp fest at Red Lobster?

Oh the humanity!
I would be reduced to this?
