http://www.theage.com.au/national/dominatrix-jailed-for-27-months-over-fraud-20080916-4hrb.html

Earlier news reports said the female victim had a intellectual disability (acquired brain injury due to alcoholism)

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/dominatrix-accused-of-stealing-300000/2007/06/04/1180809397563.html

This report - interestingly - says the Dominatrix originally maintained to police that she was entitled to spend the money.

Someone else might be able to shed more light on the background facts of this case.  I do not recall ever meeting the accused or her victim.  Nor did anyone else we asked in our local scene.

How do you acquire a brain injury from alcoholism?  Getting too drunk, falling over and banging your head?

Brain injury can be caused by alcohol because it:
  • Has a toxic effect on the central nervous system.
  • Results in changes to metabolism, heart functioning and blood supply.
  • Interferes with the absorption of vitamin B1 (thiamine), which is an important brain nutrient.
  • May be associated with poor nutrition.
  • Can cause dehydration, which may lead to wastage of brain cells.
  • Can lead to falls and accidents that injure the brain.

Yes, alcohol=bad.  I get that.  In fact, I'm quite experienced at wasting brain cells myself.

What I don't get is what the claim was based on.  Is this common in your court system?  Because it would be a real stretch in our courts to prove that there was brain injury from alcoholism.  Impaired judgement yes, actual brain injury no.  Unless this is a cultural difference in language where they are referring to impaired judgement as a brain injury.

I don't quite understand.  The victim had an acquired brain injury.  She was (is) disabled.  That made it easier to steal her money

You should meet my ex-husband.

Well, there are medical tests to prove the diganosis of brain injury. Neurological and cognitive damage do occur with the excessive use of alcohol (and drugs) as well as severe damage to the digestive system and liver. If the news media can lawfully print that this 'slave' is brain injured then a doctor somewhere diagnosed it, probably for insurance benefits.

Actually long term alchol abuse causes permanent brain injury resulting in dementia that is permanent and progressive. Its called Korsekoff's syndrome.

This is a very sad story and a warning to slaves/subs to be careful of who they put their trust into. I think this is actually more commonplace than most people think, I think because of the amount of money it made the news. There are many slaves who work and turn their entire paychecks over to their Owners and then later are released and do not see a penny of it. I know of one personally who left with only the clothes on her back after 5 years of service to her Dom. She was to embarrassed to try to do anything about it so she let it go. She made a good living, more than required to cover living expenses and he kept it all. Very sad.

I'm personally against financial slavery.  I figure that 'you busted your ass for that money, it's yours.'  That's just me though.  I ask that my pet have a job, if he likes, for incidentals that he might like, which we don't tend to take care of for him.  For example, if he wants to have a night out on his own, or with a friend, to go to the movie or grab dinner or something.  In general, it doesn't happen, but, just saying, if.  Normally though, even then, if we're shopping and he grabs something we normally wouldn't buy, I'll just throw it in with the stuff we're already getting anyway, because, well... why not?
