This is something of my own curiosity. I have some land I am thinking of building a home on. I found a company that will build a castle to custom specifications. I have always been interested in the Norman Keeps. As I saw many in my travels in Europe. My question is if I build my Keep should a dungeon be included and should it be fully equiped and functional? And any sugguestions on what that equipment should be?

if you mean a dungeon as a basement...it is a wee bit easier to dig one before the house is erected, as opposed to changing your mind at a later date.

I'd build that castle with an unfinished dungeon beneath and then install the equipment latter as it is acquired or needed.

Sounds like fun along with time and work! Cool idea just the same. I would love to one day live in an referbished church for some reason *shrug* Visiting some would be a good start.

I makes logical sense to me that first get your Keep built with an unfurnished dungeon. You can then furnish said dungeon as you see fit according to your needs. Doesn't make sense to fully furnish a dungeon without knowing what will be used and what will be sitting in a corner collecting dust. Unless yo have an unlimited source of income to squander?

yep build the dungeon complete with medieval torture equipment, build a slave quarters outside along with a gallows for the pesky ones who try to escape and get caught. You'll need a stable for your horses and a place for your dogs, don't forget to build big rooms for the nobles to stay in they dont have big rooms they get bitchy if kept in cramped quarters. Also did you decide on indoor plumbing or no? that maybe too modern day and ruin everything...
