These new electric cars will be priced between $30,000 - $40,000.

1 hour, 28 minutes ago

"DETROIT - General Motors Corp. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner unveiled the automaker's long-awaited electric car Tuesday and said the turmoil in U.S. financial markets should not affect government loan guarantees that would help the auto industry develop high-tech vehicles."

There is a federal tax credit and many states have tax credits for purchasing alternative fuel vehicles.

I have been looking at one of those compressed natural gas vehicles... and the refueling attachment that connects straight to the gas line running into the house.

I like the concept of the Volt.

Chin up, kitten.  Maybe you could have some fundraisers?

In the end, nothing like a good old-fashioned explosion engine   .

I saw the concept car awhile back at a show. Definately better looking than the Prius and other Gruppy (green yuppy) cars but, it would take ALOT of driving miles to make it worth the extra $$. Which is why I didn't buy a gruppy car and probably won't. They've got to get more competitively priced (and sexier, and zippier) to intrigue me.

What gets me is that I don't think these things need to be so expensive. They tout a user configurable LCD display. I want a spedometer. They tout climate control. I want defrosters for the windshield.

I thought the idea of these things was to save money and be a bit easier on the environment. Having every concievable bell and whistle on it is not accomplishing anything.

I agree - nothing more unclassy than a car loaded up like a cheap whore, but I like the idea of no petrol anyway - what I'd like to see is cars with flex-engines that run on gas, methanol (from coal) and ethanol (from corn).

That's my point exactly. Sure, it's very cool to save fuel costs but not if your car payment and insurance payment eats up that savings.

Another thing that makes me wary, especially after my little foray into owning a car considered high performance, what about the maintanance costs? What happens after that car starts racking up the miles and you need more than the oil and lube job? Who will service them and how much will that cost? Are the replacement parts going to be cost effective?

Also, how does it handle in less than perfect road conditions? Is it going to be like my trustworthy little Prism that always keeps her feet under her or is it going to be like the finicky sexy beast that loves to zoom zoom around corners on clear pavement but cannot handle 3 inches of wet snow to save her or my ass?

These are the things I consider simply because of the miles I put on a car. I tend to get to those more expensive service calls alot faster than the average bear.

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flex-Fuel = bad, bad, bad...

Coal gasification (gas from coal) is not now, and probably never wiil be, efficient.  I takes WAY more energy input than what you get out and the CO2 emissions of the process are through the roof.

Ethanol is just plain wrong in SO many ways.  It delivers about 25% less energy than straight gasoline, so you use more to get the same results.  The only reason E85 is priced similar to gasoline is HUGE government subsidies.  Diverting corn from people food and animal feed has sent the price of both soaring.  Almost everything on a typical grocery store shelf has corn in it in some form, usually the evil HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup).  Not to mention the whole moral issue of using food to move our cars when there are still people in the world who are starving...

If you want to go with a renewal, liquid fuel, bio-diesel is the way to go.  All that algea that China had to clean-up before the Olympics could be used to make a very clean-burning diesel fuel.

I would LOVE to have an electric car but how about something in the $15,000 - $20,000 range?  Of course I'd also like to have a real job again so I would have somewhere to drive my shiny new Volt Jr....

More nuke plants!

I'm in, when they can do 200 miles on battery, with a gas backup.

Until then....I'm stuck with my Prius.

(BUT!!!!! What I want is....a mini van, with 200 miles battery, backup...gas).

(That's what I want).

Or better yet, 200 miles on battery, and backup with CNG, or a mini diesel engine that can run off of recycled cooking oil, or biodiesel.

Does a "sexy car" mean reclining seats or a wide enough back seat/fold out area for sexual frolicking during picnics?
