FatDad, weren't you one of the most vociferous voices out there, foaming when it came to black voters voting Obama 'because he's black'? If not, glad I'm wrong, but this thread is a perfect opportunity for me to point out the hypocrisy that's running like a dirty under current in the present campaign - women should vote Palin 'coz she's a chick; black people shouldn't vote Obama 'coz he's a black dude. See?

As for your ideas on abortion, feminism and 'women in general', you have so much to learn I don't quite know where to start. For sure, this isn't the right place to provide you with an education

A lot of people are going to comment on this...um…’abortion on demand’ idea of yours. I would like to point out that the idea that I should, as a woman, embrace Sarah Palin because of her ‘accomplishments’ is, itself demeaning. The idea that her accomplishment should mean more because she is a woman is demeaning to woman.

Your fake sympathy (“I would like to think….”) and your instance on phrasing abortion it terms of ‘pro abortion’ and ‘abortion on demand’ is more than enough to let us know what your position is. Posting under the guise of ‘discussion’ is disingenuous.

Not at all.

I don't think there is anything wrong with people voting ethnicity, race or sex. I feel that one should be allowed to vote for whoever they want, however they want and for any reason they want.

I can only imagine the sense of pride and joy that a Black voter who chooses to vote for Obama will have when they pull the lever. I image its the same joy my grandmother felt when her father and mother voted for Al Smith and then she for John Kennedy. In many ways I envy that. To that end, there should be joy in helping put a "first" in.

For many putting the first Black man in the oval office is the single most important factor in their vote.

For others putting the first Woman in the VP chair is the single most important factor in their vote.

There is nothing wrong with either reason.

But again.... That's a different thread.

The right to have an abortion doesn't make my top ten, as far as feminist issues.

1. Equal Pay for Equal Word
2. Equal Opportunity for Advancement, Based Upon Merit
3. Protection from Sexual Harrassment on the Job
4. Rape Crisis Management
5. Educational Opportunity, Including Title-9
6. Addessing the Plight of Abused and Runaway UM's (you know, the issue that is so dreadful, we can't even talk about it)
7. Family Leave for Parenting Purposes
8. Federal Funding for Proper Day Care
9. Increases Police Awareness for Abused Spouses
10. Increased Federal Funding for Medical Research (the private sector system is not serving us well)

I don't even consider reproductive rights a feminist issue at all. I consider it a hangers-on issue.

Perhaps we don't embrace Sarah Palin because she doesn't represent much of what we consider core values? As with other women in politics, I am glad to see that women have been given entree to some positions previously off-limits to us, but I don't actually admire or agree with the particular woman. Feminism isn't about being in-favor of "just any woman" - it's about recognizing that women have an equal value in the world as men. Among many women I know who are part of the feminist discussion, I know many who are personally pro-life. Unlike the pro-life political agenda that draws a small circle and excludes many, being pro-choice allows one to draw a much larger circle that has plenty of room for those that consider themselves pro-life.

Feminism is not about electing women. You can't just completely ignore the quality of a candidate for a position.

Voting is about electing people that have your best interests in mind. If you think Palin has the best interests of the modern woman in mind, take a reality check. Particularly shady characters that reflect poorly on the female sex as a whole.

Kind of like being a libertarian isn't about voting for the guy that says the words "tax break" the most(Ironically enough...they are normally lying anyway, when you look at their whole administration). Vote in a slight economic deregulation, at the cost of systemic breaches of civilian rights/privacies... and you're not doing too good in the liberty department.

Geraldine Ferraro already shattered that ceiling.

Palin's ticket hasn't won yet (I expect them to, but so far she's not accomplished all that much that a Democrat woman hasn't already).
