YourhandMyAss -> I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/16/2008 6:50:18 PM)

Some of you may remember Iwa s asking about those nutrasystem meals, where you order the food an it comes all cooked and all ya got to do is microwave it, but it was like 300 bucks a month?

Well there's a website called dinnermyway.com and They're a meal service, they prechop it all and have it all ready for you and all you have to do is come in and assemble the ingrediants you want and take it home and cook it. Each month the website lists their menu and you just choose whatcha want, then ya just go in package it up pay and leave.

I am really excited. I ordered some food from them, for october 3rd to see if they're any good. Cause if they are, we'll forgo spending all that money on tv dinners at the grocery store an just go down to dinnermyway store an pick up fresh foods. Because I am frusterated with how much salt and bad crap pre packaged foods have in them, but have no desire to prep a meal an cook it Myself so prepackaged foods is really your only choice if you refuse to cook.

I ordered a side dish of veggies in cream sauce with cheese and chives, and an apple spice roast, and chilli lime prawns for daddy an it was only 30 dollars.  It's like 11 dollars for a sevring for 3 and 22 dollars for a serving for 6 and 5 bucks for individual servings.

Is cooking so terrible?

Also, there are less expensive, healthy frozen meal alternatives. Kashi is one brand and Amy's is another.

FR

If it were me, i think i'd put the money spent on this service to use on a culinary arts course. Maybe a nice holiday to somewhere like New Orleans where they do those cookery holidays things.
It's good to want to eat more healthy food, but with a little self education you can cook it yourself without recourse to the microwave.....and it would be a lot cheaper.

i spend about $135 or sometimes less (for a family of 3) in groceries a week because i don't buy pre-packaged foods. mine have a homecooked meals with enough leftovers for the next day.

my pov, it seems you're going to spend more with dinnermyway.com than doing the shopping yourself.

RCdc -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 9:30:03 AM)

Can you not cook yourself?  I spend way less than that feeding a family of four - which includes three square meals a day and treats.  You get to maintain your salt and sugar intake and guarrentee where the produce comes from if you farm or local shop.

TV dinners?  Do people actually buy that crap?
You can stretch your dollar much farther by preparing your own meals.  Plus it is fresh, not over-processed garbage.  Yes, it takes time and planning.
There's no reason to not be able to cook.  You can find multiple recipes for amost anything on-line.
So, yeah, what everyone else says, do it yourself.

Not to mention the fact that things like the DinnerMyWay services are only available in very specific areas.  While they might be convenient for those who live in those areas, they're utterly useless for anyone else.  Just remember that Convenience Always Comes With a Higher Pricetag.  If you're looking to save money, Convenient is Not the way to go about it.

Learning to cook isn't difficult.  Learning to cook healthy isn't difficult.  Cooking inexpensive, healthy meals for yourself is not only not difficult, it's considerably cheaper (and more fun) than spending your money on over processed drek like frozen dinners or overpriced, overhyped convenience services that are honestly No Different than eatting out.

If you HONESTLY want to control what goes into your body, the ONLY option is to Cook For Yourself.  You cannot guarentee the quality of ingredients, the freshness, or the flavor of foods you get through a service.  You are also Extremely limited in your Choices.  They only offer so many things per month - and you might want something very different than what is offered.  With 15 minutes per week of planning you can create a varied, healthy, tastey menu that specifically caters to you and  your family's preferences for the week.  With that menu in hand, going to the grocery store and avoiding impulse shopping is a snap.  Simple cooking courses are offered at a Lot of community colleges these days, so it wouldn't even necessarily take a trip out of town to learn how - and knowing your own limitations on what you're currently capable of creating in the kitchen makes it easier to do your menu planning appropriately.

Here is a very healthy quick meal that I made two nights ago with things out of the cupboard.

2 cloves garlic minced, sauteed in about 3 TBS olive oil for a few seconds
then I added about 3 glugs of dry white wine (optional)
a can of chopped tomatoes
couple shakes of basil because I was too lazy to go to the garden and get some fresh
couple shakes of parsley
couple shakes of red pepper flakes
simmered while I did chores

cooked some pasta

put the tomato stuff with the pasta stuff, grated some parm cheese on it, voila'

Meal for two, and lunch for me twice.

Nothing fancy or difficult. All stuff I keep in my cupboards or fridge for just such an occasion.

You can add stuff to it like various veggies ( I like to add leftover grilled veggies like zuchini) beef, chicken or seafood. I didn't because I was being lazy.

And, it was CHEAP! Very very cheap.

We have something like that near us.  A complete waste of money.  Ohhh......... free prep work..that is because you have to do.  All they are doing is the shopping and cleaning for you.

Take the money and take a cooking class, if you want a great cooking class, with world renowed Chefs drop me a line.  It will cost you less in the long run

Cook once a week. Roast two chickens and then with the leftovers you can make chicken quesadillas, chicken caesar wraps or salads, chicken soup, chicken and mushrooms in gravy over noodles, etc.

Cooking just once a week saves a lot of time and is much healthier.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 2:30:03 PM)

what a waste of $$$...

im on a chicken kick... i buy 4kg box of chicken for $20..it lasts me the whole month...there are a ton of things that are easy you can make with...for instance those beefstro (i probly spelled that wrong)express rice mix about $3 a pack...go well with it...and only 2 mins in the microwave.

you can also make chicken helper.... you can make awesome sandwiches...or salads or just fry up some fries...

the odd time i order out i get pizza or mr sub(they deliver you know..)

and its healthy.

Even those individually frozen chicken breasts that come in a bag are great. You can defrost them, slice them for stirfry (which takes literally minutes to make) or mix with a pasta dish. You can toss one in a pan with olive oil and some seasonings and have a great chicken sandwich or with some steamed veggies.

For something real easy and real good for you I do fishsticks and baked beans and rice with frozen mixed vegetable mixed in with it.

BrokenSaint -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 5:01:20 PM)

It honestly doesn't even take all that much planning. For one, buy a deep freezer if you don't have one. Make a list of your favorite meats. Things you really love, and keep an eye out for a big sale. Buy a crapload of them whenever they come on sale, and keep your eye out constantly for restocking. If you're not too picky something you like will always be on sale (at least in an area like mine, there's seriously like 20 grocery stores within a few miles). Buy a big mess of sidedishes, frozen veggies, some canned ones, noodles, rice, etc. Take something out every day, and cook it. Not difficult, and not nearly as time consuming as people think. For instance tonight? Fettuchine Alfredo with chicken. Couldn't have taken me I'd figure more than an hour, and most of that was spent just letting it cook and doing other things.

Roselaure -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 5:23:17 PM)

I also buy individually frozen fish filets, salmon, tilapia, orange roughy.  Defrost,  salt, pepper, a little garlic powder, pan sear it for 3 minutes each side in a hot skillet with a little olive oil.  I usually make a salad or steam a veg.  Fast lo-cal and delicious.

christine1 -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 5:23:24 PM)

crockpots are a good way to go as well.  go to recipes.com and you can find hundreds of them.  i get mine ready before i go to bed the night before.  get it out and turn it on before work the next morning...it's done and yummy wheni  get home.  it's easy, it doesn't heat up your house and it always turns out good.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 5:31:55 PM)

i have more chicken (and pork) than red meat stocked in my freezer. from kabobs to fajitas and stir fry, the meal planning it endless. tomorrow - it homemade sauce for chicken parmigna.

if i have to cover a band that night, i cook during the day so they will have something to eat later.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: I am trying out dinnermyway.com's food service. (9/17/2008 6:15:26 PM)

I did say you're the one cooking it once you go pick it up, if you so choose to. They're basically like a big grocery store themselves, you go in, you pick out the meal you want, you put it together then you take it home and cook it. You just don't have to chop it up and all the other stuff you'd do coming strait home from the grocery store.

I know how to cook, so I can but I have absolutely zero interest or desire to cook. It's an unpleasant chore to me. I am extreamly uninclined to be domestic, and some people may have aproblem w ith that but I am ok with it. I think if I had a partner who wasn't to lazy or so unwilling to help it might be more fun, but as it is I don't, and around here if you cook you're expected to do the dishes you dirty up* which is fair* so the entire thing falls to me and me alone, the prep the cooking and the clean up. And most the time I am tired hot and cranky by time the meals out of the oven, and I have absolutely no desire to tend to cleaning the kitchen on top of cooking, and no He won't do it.

Funny thing about chicken, I bought a package of 20 an they had bones in them an the recipee called for boneless, And boneless around here is really expensive and so I made due, but it took me like 20 mins to sit there and cut 5 of them* the am ount we used* from the bone manually, good thing I am so juvinal when bored, lol I talked to those chickens and told them stuff like oh no you will not excape me, I got you now bwahahaha. And then i wasn't so bored any more and was actually in quite a good mood cause being silly had uplifted my mood.
