How 'bad' they are depends on how they are used and the thickness of the cane. I know, not what you wanted to hear, right? LOL Thinner canes are more 'whippy' and flexible and give a different sensation than one that is thicker and more rigid. As OsideGirl said, it is (or should be) a slow tool. Several strikes is quick succession will result in a very quick cascading of sensation that will result in sensory overload (not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't take much to make it happen). To me a hard cane strike has different layers of sensation. First you feel the impact, but that's not really so bad. Within a second or two I can then feel the pain spread like fire. It spreads both along the area of impact but it also penetrates deep into the muscle. Depending on the type of cane (thin and whippy or thicker and rigid) it may penetrate more (oww, oww, oww, yum!) or less. I find thinner canes give much more of a stinging sensation. Canes can also be used in a sensual way to impart a very wide variety of sensations from taps to mild stings to vibrations. They can be used in this manner on breasts, cocks, balls, pussies, you name it. You're not limited to just the back and ass (mind you a really good workout on your back feels like a nice, deep tissue massage and is very relaxing). A friend of mine makes his own canes. He buys rattan and peels it himself. Apparently unpeeled rattan is more likely to splinter. He also does not recommend bamboo. He then uses one of two processes to cure them - he soaks them in either linseed oil (messy!) or in a salt brine (basically pickles them, much less messy). Then he finishes them with some sort of wax. I rather like the salt cured canes myself.
