Why would I hang up on a telemarketer? Why would someone chose not to spend a long, boring flight in a fascinating conversation getting to know yours truly, when I made nothing but polite overtures? When I approach someone completely uninvited, I accept that they have the right to reject. In that case, rudeness involves deliberate, pointed meanness, not just simple, silent rejection. I approach people constantly, ( I LIKE people) - in the grocery line, the laundry mat, the airplane. However, if they chose to ignore me, to make a polite excuse or to simply saying, 'I'm sorry, I was busy thinking' = or whatever - i do not take offense. How is that rude? I approached them unsolicited. HOw could i possibly think they OWE me a certian amount of time and attention, no matter how small?
