AAkasha -> Anyone have any experiences with Massage Envy? (9/18/2008 9:39:12 AM)

I enjoy going to the spa and get massages regularly. My favorite day spa is a bit of a hike.  There's a chain of spas called Massage Envy (www.massageenvy.com) that is inexpensive (not so much frills - more of a clinic) and requires membership.  I've read a bit online about it and it seems very hit or miss.

Anyone have experience with this format/location and can compare it to a day spa?

If you live in the pheonix area they are awesome.  Why don't you go in and see if they will let you by a half message (15 minutes) to try it out before you purchase?  It's worth a shot and since you're female they're more likely to say yes (sorry gents) I prefer the day spa with the women doing it and the whole aromtherapy etc, BUT if you need a quick fix and you can impart upon a large muscle bound man that yes you are serious when you say its too hard then you will love it.  I've noticed more men belong to those though.  Gosh I'm rambling sorry.  Go and see if they'll let you try before you buy.  If you're going to drop cash on a membership PLUS each message you have every right to sample the goods:)

It's hit or miss. I've been a massage therapist for 15 years. Generally, you get what you pay for. Many places such as cruise ships , resort spas and other establishments that focus more on doing volume than on building repeat clientelle hire newly licensed, inexperienced massage therapist, pay them little and turn them over when they "burn out". Sometimes you get lucky and find a gifted therapist who will do an excellent job. I suggest you ask friends for the name of a specific massage therapist whom they've had a good experience with. In any case, make sure that whoever works on you pays attention to the necessary feed back that you give him or her. Every massage should be customized to your needs and preferences.

Thanks!!
Right now they are offering an introductary 50 minute massage for $39 to get people in the door and try to sell them on the membership..so I will take a look.

I think if I had a massage therapist I liked I would stick with them if they were an independent, but I have to get massages outside of my home, and prefer a quiet environment. I work from here and part of what I need is to be away from this space, no matter how much I made a room quiet or whatnot. I can't be here, it would defeat the purpose - so a masseuse that does housecalls would be out.

Do massage therapists hate a lack of feedback? Or is that fairly common?

A good massage therapist encourages feedback. I can tell, by palpating, how much pressure is appropriate for a client, i.e., how much works to release tight soft tissue. However, I can't always tell what a client's subjective experience is. Some people prefer a very firm touch, others a moderate or light touch. Every massage should be relaxing  and a pleasure as well as therapeutic. If you find a massage therapist who resents or doesn't honor your feedback, I suggest terminating the massage and refusing payment just as you would send back an over cooked steak to the kitchen. You, as the client, should have your prferences honored and your feedback valued.

C and I went to a Massage Envy last month. Other than the high pressure sales pitch, it was pretty decent.

I've been going to one of these downtown for a whle now. It is convenient to my job so an afterwork massage while the rush hour mobs clear off the "L" makes for a good end to a long day.

The problem, and the reason I won't be renewing my contract, is the massage therapists are hit and miss quality wise. I've had to stop the massage and request a different therapist on several occasions. I think it is likely based on what cjan wrote that these are very inexperienced people and some simply don't respond well to verbal feedback.
