Vendaval -> American Psychological Association ban on Gitmo interrogations (9/18/2008 11:09:54 AM)

I have been waiting to see what position the APA would eventually take on the interrogations at Guantanamo Bay.  This vote is a positive move against unethical practices that have been used in the treatment of prisoners.

"Psychologists vote against role in interrogation"

By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer

"The nation's leading psychologists' association has voted to ban its members from taking part in interrogations at the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and other military detention sites where it believes international law is being violated.

The ban means those who are American Psychological Association members can't assist the U.S. military at these sites. They can only work there for humanitarian purposes or with non-governmental groups, according to Stephen Soldz, a Boston psychologist. Soldz is founder of an ethics coalition that has long supported the ban.

"This is a repudiation by the membership of a policy that has been doggedly pursued by APA leadership for year after year," Soldz said Thursday. "The membership has now spoken and it's now incumbent upon APA to immediately implement this." "

Are they implying some torture might be too much torture. Will we need to hold congressional hearings to determine just how much torture is enough torture.....this whole conversation is....torturous !!!!!!

Much of how torture is defined is already documented.  Which documents you follow can be a matter of debate.

I think there should be a Congessional Hearing lead by Joe Biden, elder statesman and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee on whether the swimming pools for the Gitmo prisoners have been completed and that the proper water temperature is being maintained.  Are the Video's of American's being beheaded kept up to date for their review, is internet access so they can contact their friends in terror organization being provided?  We should make sure that these people are being tucked into their beds each night with their heads facing towards Mecca!

Gosh..when they are released by the terrific lawyering of the ACLU we should provide the same $2,000 gift card we gave to American Katrina victims.  That's the lease we could do.  This way, if our warriors are ever captured we can be assured that they will be kept in the Teheran Hilton with full room service and not tortured the way those nasty North Vietnamese treated McCain.

So the bottom line here Cory is you are okay with The United States of America being in the torture business. You see I and others thought( maybe we were wrong) we were supposed to be the good guys,I know simplistic of me and all that.Thought we were supposed to be a country of laws and due process, could you please enlighten me to when that went off the rails....Just how much did we lose on 9/11....was it not enough the loss of life, the scarring of the national soul...   the sense of saftey, the hieghtened security measures, all this and our identity too?

It went "off the rails" mike, when Bush removed hebeas corpus from the Constitution of the United States. (The document that defines what it is to BE an American.) By doing so, the only part of the Constiution he didn't end up gutting is the "non-quartering of military in your home" article. I'm not exactly sure what we have been living as in the interem... but we haven't been Americans, per se, by definition. "Bushicans" maybe? Subjects of his imperial glory, Bush the Injust II? But it sure does seem to be hypocritical and embarassing to be one these days.

Thank you phil.  You will have to coach me on the pronunciation of your language.  The spelling is rather confusing for a native English speaker. [:D]

.....oh Welsh is a weird language. We have two letter combinations that are considered single letters. There was an english born welsh language advocate called Fred Francis. He decided to change the spelling of his name in accordance with welsh pronounciation. Ended up with Ffred Ffrancis. Because a double f is an f sound, while a single f is sounded like the english v. It's not my fault though honest. And i'm not going to even touch how ll sounds......[8D]
