I am interested in getting a job in the fetish community to help Me make contacts for My own business ventures... I am not interested in modeling, nor getting a tech job. Advocacy would be ideal, but I would settle for something else that I might not be considering. Does anyone know of any legit directories or leads? I would also be interested in hearing what others have done to break into the scene somehow. Care to share?

I'm not entirely certain what you mean. What kind of work are you looking for, exactly? It's not as though the "fetish community" is a huge corperation with office buildings and stuff...a huge section of different job listings.

Fetish jobs I can think of
Pro-domme (or the rarer breed of pro-dom)-I assume you already are one.
Craftspeople-You say you're no good for tech
Owners of stores and sellers of items -Requires considerable investment, and most successful kinky store owners are craftspeople in their own rights
Models/Actors -you say you're not one for modelling
Teachers/ Writers-Speakers and writers on the topic of BDSM are masters in their fields and have great people skills. If you're still trying to "break into" the community, you're unlikely to be offered any of these gigs.

Unless you're qualified to do any of those things, the fetish community probably doesn't have a hell of a lot of openings for you. You speak about "advocacy"...unless you're a lawyer, I doubt there's a hell of a lot you can do. Certainly, there is a place for advocates for kink...marching in parades, writing letters to politicians, and what not, but I'm pretty sure those aren't paid positions.

I'd suggest getting very active in first your local, then your regional organizations. That would be the best way to become "known", and things would evolve from there.

I had a very brief (2 hour) career doing phone sex. It wasn't that I was squeamish, but it was all but impossible to hold a conversation with someone who was both mumbling and whispering and I suspect, covering the phone and his mouth with his hand. All the calls were like that, so I called it a career very quickly.

It seems to me that most "jobs" in the community, outside of modeling and porn, are self-created and suited to your own skills and the needs you see in your own community. Outside of that there is the fabrication of toys and furniture.

All else considered, unless you're a pro-domme, I wouldn't count on making a living, Most of the best work I've seen in the community in the line of advocacy is done on a voluntary basis.

I think it's testimony to some people that they automatically assume porn or sex in this environment.
Yeah, I am snarky - geez people - I need coffee and a dose of positivity on this board recently.

MistressMadame - there are lots of different options. Depending on your skills, art could be a good option - painting, design, jewellery. If you are bright enough and willing to study, you could do anything from massage to being a kink aware therapist or lawyer. Proof reader for erotica? Writing erotica. Sales - from fashion to toys. Beauty theraphy is another good idea, you could learn and attend workshops and specialise in costume(for fetish modelling work/furries/film sets) or trans - transformations. Become a personal shopper for people unable to shop openly for themselves. All these can be utilised in the BDSM world - getting a good website set up, advertising in fetish magazines and participating in your local community allows you to network. It's all good.

I know in the communities i belong to, most of the "jobs" are all non paid volunteer positions. Which mean alot of work for nothing but the gratitude of your fellow members.

Thankfully Edmonton has alot of great people willing to work their asses off for nothing more then that.

OP, i'd concentrate on finding ways to volunteer your time for your local community. Best way to meet people and to feel like you're doing something worthy.

I really don't think you're going to find a paying job unless you want to model, be a craftsperson or vendor or "movie" star so to speak.

Thank you very much for your responses, everyone... especially the encouraging ones. To clarify, I have some of My own "self made" ideas for carving out My own niche in the scene, but they will be costly to start up initially. So, I thought in the meantime, that I could find volunteer opportunities or actual work to that could not only help Me to network but might also help Me cover the substantial cost of start up. I understand that Kinkville isn't made up of corporate offcies, and that the popular options for work might be limited to modeling, proDomination (I am actually not a prodomme), or be a web designer of sorts, but I identified that I did have skill in some of those areas, nor were they interests of Mine. So, I decided to open it up to get ideas from others because I felt there had to be other opportunities that I was not thinking of... I also was curious as to what others who did work in the fetish field (in someway; in whatever way) did and how they got started in it, because surely, since much of the community is fragmented and underground, it can be a challenge for others to "break in" regardless of their personal experience in the scene.

Nevertheless, I appreciate the efforts of everyone who has contributed.
