oh my wow...i could not resist posting this!  

could this be the motivation for russia stating they have strong desire to explore the Antarctic's resources?

"MOSCOW — Rattled by falling oil prices and the war in Georgia, Russia’s stock market has slumped so severely that it now threatens the country’s oil-fueled boom of recent years, economists say.
The benchmark RTS index has lost 46 percent of its value since its peak in May, representing a paper loss of about $700 billion for Russian companies. Much of that decline has come since the war in Georgia and the subsequent war of words with the United States and Europe that unsettled foreign investors, who began withdrawing capital."

i don't think that is a real possibility.

imho "we" should support Russia as a check against future Chinese expansion.

Since both major parties here are trying to out hate the Bear, well, i doubt that will happen. But it should.

do u not understand the magnitude of Russia siezing a large portion of the Arctic?  Russia will not only infringe on the US's rights to arctic resources, but also Canada's.

I'm much more worried about Chinese expansion into Siberia than Russian expansion into the artic.

China has made no overtures of expanding into Siberia.  Siberia is in the middle of the Russian Federation.  China would be stupid to do so; it would spark a huge war with a formidible military power.  Russia still has more nukes than anyone else.  If anything, the Chinese and the Russians have been cooperating militarily and economically for the last 10 years.  Russia's vast oil resources are important to China's future, and it's cheaper to buy them than take them by force.  Your fears are unfounded and uninformed.
