or some such logic.  The boards, here and at other venues are swamped with the tabloid theatre of "American Politics".  One subject, in particular, caught my attention.  That is the legal effect of a Subpoena on the "average tax payer" as opposed to one of "privilege" eg: politican or eh, married to one.

The average tax payer, faces many potential penalties for ignoring a Subpoena.  In pretty much 99.99% of the cases, Mr. Average Tax Payer does not have the financial resources, either personal or business or tax payer paid, to motion a Court to eternity explaining why he/she should not be compelled to attend to give evidence.  Why does this not apply to our politicans?  Their spouses?  The law is suppose to be EQUAL for EVERYONE.  BLIND to social standing.  Obviously there is a great bias, or again, money begets money.

My humble opinion is that when it comes to the law, Subpoenas in particular, it is an even playing field.  There are no excuses, you show up.  Period.

Putting the political party line aside, what is your opinion?  Should the law remain BLIND to social/political/economic standing and retain the "men are equal" mentality, or.........is there a good reason to afford this preferential treatment to elected politicans?

(pardon in advance for any spelling errors.....man, I cannot see)

I will avoid your covered jab, and simply suggest that sometimes it depends on the authority of those that issued such.  Sometimes they aren't worth the paper they are written on.

With all due respect Sir, if you were a lesbian, I would be all over you.

Real_Trouble -> RE: All men created equal... (9/19/2008 6:45:56 PM)

It has always been the case that Americans are equal up to the point of wealth and/or power.

This manifests in many, many places.  OJ Simpson would be in jail if he were not (previously) rich, for instance.

No "covered jab" at all Thadius.......but from your "jab" I will take it that you obviously have a certain party in mind (grin), however, being a simple, lowly Canuck, we too have our politicans of persuasion, shall I say.

I was simply commenting on an issue, that while contraversal for years, seems to have gained some strength and news coverage, with our joint elections.

I have also, recently experienced this same scenario "real life"...which left me wondering.  I simply felt it may be an interesting topic......or maybe not.

Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that people in positions of power, or people with huge resources at their disposal do not suffer with the law them way us folk in "the great unwashed" live our days.  Nothing will ever change that equation, and it probably is a truth to be found everywhere on the planet.

sasseeNshy -> RE: All men created equal... (9/19/2008 7:03:06 PM)

I wholeheartedly agree with you......hence my point.  Why are us "little people" so to speak not screaming like hell for equal justice?  Why are we so passive? Almost dis-interested?

Who says we are all passive, or quiet about it?  Some of us realize the only way to change such things is to get involved by electing those that believe the way we do, become part of the legal system, or get elected to office ourselves.

I will leave it at that without adding my own cynicism to the talk.
