Recently I watched Episode Six of Firefly: "Our Mrs. Reynolds".  It has in my opinion the best portrayal of a Switch I have ever seen.

In the first part of the episode, the title character gives an incredibly hot submissive performance, then turns the table and goes dominant.

Anyone else have any good main stream 'switch' videos?

YoSafBridge is not a switch.  She's a trained companion psycho.  So if you want to believe play acting is akin to one's orientation, then go for it.  But we all know the real YoSafBridge is a hard selfish cunning weasel- nothing to do with Ds.

It is a TV show, everyone is 'acting'.   You can admire the performance of Christina Hendrick, as Saffron (real life name of real life actress) commenting about how good she is, but you can't admire the performance of Saffron as YoSafBridge?

When you see "psycho", I see "really, really, really enjoys her play acting".

Irregardless of everything else, there is an actress giving multiple performances.  I admire one performance as a submissive, and another by the same actress of a dominant woman in charge of everything around her.

Second that. Although YoSaffBridge could Dom me anytime, I reckon I wouldn't appreciate her tactics: being naked in the desert is a hard limit. Oh, and also being killed is.
If we want to talk about Firefly dynamics, I think Zoe is a better topic. Submissive to Mal, and yet clearly the Dom to Wash. However...Wash does smack her ass upon occasion. Is she? Isn't she?

No I mean the CHARACTER Yosafbridge is completely acting when she's pretending to be all submissive and subservient and deferring.  The fact is she's ALWAYS in charge, she's ALWAYS manipulating how they see her and how they react towards her.  She's not actually being submissive, she's just lulling them into a sense of security and pretending to be a naive waif.  And when she doesn't get what she wants through soft seduction, she bangs you over the head with a wrench, knocks you out and then leaves you all to die so she can get paid and move on to her next job.

The psycho part is because she's not really doing it because she's driven to out of need, but because there's something broken inside, it's just a game to her, people's lives are just chess pieces to move as she wants.

Christina is an amazing acress, anyone who hasn't seen her as Joan on Mad Men is missing something.  She alone makes the show worthwhile.

But Yosafbridge isn't a switch.

She's not submissive to Mal- she's following the chain of command to the captain.  It has nothing to do with the fact that it's Mal other than she respects he's in that position and how he got there.

The commentaries show Alan asking if he could smack her butt on occasion to show people that he's not a total doormat and that they have more depth to their relationship than just her being the strong warrior woman and him being the weak geek.

People need to stop equating actions to orientation, and positions which inherently have authority dynamics (like captain/first mate) and personal relationships which are based ON authority dynamics.

*quick hijack*  I love her on Mad Men and she definitely is a key player.  Although January Jones is a cutie patootie.  Hubba hubba.  [8D]

I wouldn't call her a switch, either. Sure, YoSafBridge is an excellent actress, but it's all a means to an end: completing the job and getting the cashy money for it. I imagine she does it the way she does it because, as someone else pointed out, it's a big, fun game for her, and she gets put out when other people don't play by her rules or just plain mess it all up as she sees it. E.g., when Inara locks her up in that dumpster when they went after the Lassiter.

Switch? Highly doubtful (excepting the fact that I bet Companions train to cater all sorts of tastes *g*). Pretty lady with more than a few issues? Oh yeah. Fun to watch? You bet! :)
