Vendaval -> 2 US helicoptors fired on by Pakistan (9/22/2008 1:52:41 AM)

Breaking news, 2 U.S. helicoptors have been fired on by Pakistan after crossing the border from Afghanistan.  I just checked the BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera but cannot find any other reports so far.  Damn, the last thing we need is more armed conflict right now. [&:]

"Pakistani troops fire on intruding U.S. choppers"

"ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani troops fired on two U.S. helicopters that intruded into Pakistani territory on Sunday night, forcing them to turn back to Afghanistan, a senior Pakistani security official said on Monday."

Sadly, its probably true, I heard similar report on German radio (just a report, nothing definitive). I don't know why the US finds it so difficult to understand border sensitivity. The more they cross the Pakistani border, they more they destabilize Pakistan, the country they claim to support and don't want to be the next failed state in the region.

Well, we will know for sure later today.  [>:]

It's here, and I saw a couple of stories that linked to the Reuters article.  I'm find it odd that the Pakistani military can remain dilligent about watching the border for Americans, but can't seem to keep terrorists from slipping back and forth across the border.

Could it be that helicopters make more noise and are so easily spotted.

Obviously though all of us here are there on the ground seeing those sneaky militants coming and going as they please. I mean I was sitting down on the outskirts of Afghanistan the other day and I saw militants with RPG's on their back being patted on the back by Pakistani security forces and told good luck with their mission. Also I realised as I was sitting on my deckchair there in Afghanistan that there is one Pakistani border patrolman for every 0.5m of border length between Afghanistan and Pakistan and they stand side by side holding hands to ensure only choice selected militants get through, it really is an amazing sight to behold.

My argument would be stop pissing about making Pakistan’s overstretched border force distracted with illegal U.S. incursions.

Yeah my suspicions are completely unfounded.  I believe the Afghans have raised the same concerns.  We are not talking about the entire Afghan-Pakistani border.  We are talking about the tribal areas which are constitute a small area in the mountains.  I'm not convinced for one minute the Pakistani military is doing what it could do to stop these people.

Slaveboy: the Pakistani regime has a very delicate balancing act to manage if it is going to remain in power.
US troops blasting across the border will only give support to the fundamentalists in Pakistan.
Meatcleaver makes the same point.

There are rogue factions within the Pakistan military sympathetic to the Taliban and other sectarians. I'd be surprised if the government there will do anything but disown the action.

Why should 'no trespassing' only apply to certain borders and not to others?

KittinSol, it should apply to all borders, right?
"All laws should be enforced."

Yep. So it follows that if a couple of helis make an uninvited incursion into Pakistani territory... they should be shot at. C'est la vie.
