What did you think of President Bush's speech on the economy tonight?
President Bush was very somber and seemed to make an effort to explain
the gravity of our current economic COLLAPSE.

Bush Calls Bailout Vital to Economy, Will Meet With McCain and Obama - washingtonpost.com

I did listen to a few commentaries on the speech, and a few have characterized
President Bush's speech tonight as pleading and desperate.

Any opinions on President Bush's speech tonight?

I can honestly say that the man is desperate - a true sad case of inadequacy.

OY!  Leave ducks out of this!  They're at least useful for eating and quite tasty!

He burned through his credibility years ago.

His speech said nothing new.

There's a chance the bill will fail altogether.  There's also a good chance that the bill will be a lot less than $700 bil.  The GOP is bucking it strongly and is demanding to have some assurance that Paulson and Bernanke have a clue, and so far they haven't gotten a reply.

It won't ever come to that, Mia - it may seem like the sky's falling now, but it will pick up again. The good news though: Bush won't be able to do any more damage much longer :-). (But what a pathetic dickwad doubled with a coward. He doesn't even have the balls to own up to the mess he's left us with .)

What baffles me is how they came up with the number $700 billion.  But now I have the answer:

""It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number.""

kittin, you must have read my mind.
The first 4 years they blamed Clinton for everything except
toxic waste.
I could actually have a shred of respect for Bush, if he would
just admit and take the blame for some damn thing.
8 years in, and he won't take the blame for anything under
his administration.
He will go down as one of the worse President's in US history, no doubt.

I thought the speech was good enough, but like others have mentioned, I simply disregard him, as he's proven he is either a liar, or easily manipulated.

I keep thinking of CL's thread a couple of weeks ago "Bush's legacy" ,methinks we should run that one again..
As far as the speech tonight, the one point that struck me is he insists the bailout is necessary and must be done now, than we can look at regulations needed to avoid this sort of disaster, shouldn't the regulations be tied to the bailout?

I could only take a couple of minutes of that glum, I know you don’t really want to look at me but I’m kinda required to do this so let’s both just bear with it, expression – so I popped one of my Babylon 5 DVDs into the player.

God that Claudia Christian is hot.

Mike? I hope you didn't vote for President Bush.
If so, you have my sympathy.
Now, if the regulations were created FIRST, than there would be more accountability.
This Administration is not good at accountability, just give them the money.
I would have loved to see President Bush say, "Where de money at?"
lol

I thought he looked very pale and thin.   How is the US government going to hold these funds and suddenly release them when they are right?
That just does not make any since whatsoever, and we need to take care of the real problem that got us here.
When a country is at war, it goes from butter to guns.   When the economy is in guns, it drains resources from butter (business).
We cannot have our cake and eat it as well.
Something has to give, and someone has to lose.  Why should it be the people?  I needs to be the CEOs and President Bush's war policies.
He has financially destroyed us with this war.

I think this is post 1000!.

I voted for Daddy Bush.  I was in the military. I knew I wanted a Bush as commander and chief then.
I actually voted for GWB against Al Gore.   Don't know why to this day except I did not feel comfortable with Gore.  Gore can make a good speach.
I didn't vote for GWB during the last election.
I won't know who I am going to vote for until the last minute.    That is just the way I am.

Of course they should be.

Bush has destroyed a lot of what the GOP stands for.  They used to be fiscal conservatives, and he's blown through money ridiculously, after Clinton handled the economy well.  They used to be isolationists, and he's attacked countries and threatened them willy-nilly.

About all left is deregulation.  Reagan promoted it and consequently it's almost a sacred precept.  If Bush allowed deregulation to die, the GOP will be left almost without an identity.

That said, the public is howling furiously now.  If a bill went through giving $700 bil to fix the finance companies' mistakes without some kind of pain for the top execs who engineered this mess, incumbent pols' heads will roll.  And regulation will be imposed, and not later either.

President Bush/Dick Cheney legacy?
pillage and steal

If Obama attempted to do half the things these 2 have done in the past 8 years,
he would have been run out of town.
Oh, I digress, let them em cake!
I love reading Crooks and Liars.com.

At this point, why not just give President Bush/Dick Cheney all the money they and
their Administration can carry and let them leave early as an early severance package?

Crooks and Liars » Isn’t it interesting that President Paulson asks for $700 billion at the end of Bush’s term
