Considering the value and appeal of the materials, can pleather be substituted in place of PVC? I'm not a big fan of wearing either leather or PVC and I like my BDSM influenced outfits to be cheerful and happy in color. Blasphemous, I know, but it goes with my style.

Also, is pleather difficult to work with for anyone who has used it before?

What are you making? Material choice depends on the type of garment and style.

I dislike working in pleather. Leather is much easier to sew. PVC is a bitch!

Sundress

I'd like to shorten the length of this dress to about mid-thigh and have the sleeves be off the shoulder with the entire thing done in white. It's for a "cat-girl" outfit that will be complete with ears, tail, white gloves and boots.

I've never sewed pleather, but I've done a fair amount of upholstery with it. Most vinyls are pretty stretchy, so you'll need to factor that in. You'll need a reasonably stout sewing machine (punching holes in it is a bit like chewing through an orange skin), and I think you'll want to use a thick thread, wider stitches to keep them from ripping through. You'll also want to use a fairly light pressure to prevent the machine from stretching it as it feeds.

I thought it was pretty manageable, but then, my fit & finish standards are pretty loose, and with the work I do I can make the stretchiness cover my inability to cut a straight line  [:)]

I suggest a thin vinyl (pleather) so it won't look bunchy on the bodice..lots of fitted seams.

It's not going to have the same graceful flow as the cotton (or cotton-like) fabric used in that dress.

How about fabric corsets? I would recommend Fallen Angel Fashions  or Damsel in this Dress.  :>
