I'm not really a John McCain apologists ... but do understand why people choose to not respond when someone calls a United States Senator a "Drama Queen," or takes a man that was tortured in a prisoner of war camp and clearly has some physical challenges, "Emperor Palpatine."

I think there are some that view that as not worthy of response. Maybe posting that sort of thing in the Star online, or some other online trash rag ... you know, kind of put those things on the level they actually rate.

Which I suspect is the reason he suspended campaigning. That's an easy way to avoid answering any questions about those statements. I don't think it's going to work out well for him. See, I agree. I think cancelling participation in the debate was unwise and not very Presidential. I would agree with some that have suggested that this debate is very important, and that being able to multi-task is important for someone that wants to be President of the United States.

That however, is a good point, and on point ... important to the election to be sure. The banal attack-dog, name calling crap is just noise.

John McCain's experience as a POW is lamentable.

Hi caitlyn

You mean you can't see how someone would call him a drama queen? The sky is always falling around him... no one can point out a failing of himself or Palin without him screaming like a baby...poor put upon McCain..He walks out on or refuses interviews because of what some newscaster says...Come on you need thick skin as a president...you cannot go off half cocked like he does. It may work OK for a senator...but not a president.

And where does it say we must respect someone because they hold public office? What is there to respect about him?

Many have served their country honorably..that does not make him anymore special than you.

Perhaps your politics is show business and mass entertainment ... mine is the serious business of picking serious people to do a serious job.

Every poll taken and study done shows that the vast majority want more fact-based campaigns, free from personal attacks, general bullshit and all around swiftboating. It seems that roughly the same group is unwilling to stay off these thing, when it comes to attacking those they don't agree with.

And we wonder why we are left with the choices we have.

As long as you have a two-party system, you will get jabs and veiled and not so unveiled insults. This is a highly mediatised culture that we live in. It's not always ideal - but I would worry about more serious things than comparing McCain to Emperor Palpatine (and I'm afraid there is a resemblance). Anyhow... you pick your battles, as they say.

Now hang on a minute. I take jabs at McCain a lot myself. But I'd be the first to say that the man's service to this country, both as a POW, and as a senator, are acts that should be commended. I don't like McCain anymore because he's changed drastically since 2000. He is no longer the "straight talker" No, now he's the "Maverick" or the "Change" candidate... the one who engages in shitty attack ads, and who resorts to pulling rabbits out of his ass to keep himself in the polls.

There's plenty to respect about McCain's record... unfortunately, there's also plenty in his record that proves that he is NOT presidential material.

If you had taken the time to look, you would have found that I'm pretty consistant in my vocal dislike for this sort of discourse, no matter the leader involved. There are not as many "pointless noise" posts on this board coming from the right, for obvious reasons ... there are not as many right-leaning people here and a few of them, FirmHanky and Thadius, are posters that can make a point without name calling.

As an aside, this post actually made me laugh, considering I just got ejected from a mostly right wing leaning board for pointing out how distasteful it was to continually call a United States Senator, a "Magic Negro."

Good try though. OK, not so much ...

I never said he should not be commended...just that he is not special because of his service...many served their country honorably. The fact that he was captured and held prisoner is not something that makes him a hero...or makes him presidential.

It is hypocritical of the Republicans to use McCain’s military record as an attribute for his presidency when they disparaged a true military hero in Kerry.
