Actually menapause can be a joy. It is how you perceive it. It gives you a time to pause and see what you have learned about life. What wisdom you might have gained?  Menapause is when our bodies change. We cannot bear children anymore but we can give birth to other creative ideas. Menapause doesn't stop us from being complete.
Hot flashes, mood swings and other problems can be dealt with. There is a lot of different treatments, though i prefer herbs, flowers and oils. When i am insomiac, i get up and create through art, writing or any other creative expression that i desire. These things i do when i am with Sir or when i am here by myself. Menapause can be a joy, at least it is for me.

I don't have anyone who is mature enough to lean on or listen without hesitation, so I just deal with it like the rest of us seem to do.
I try to remember that it might just be all in My head and I bite My tongue instead of opening My mouth....although, there are times when that doesn't work.

The main problem I had was with my periods.  That caused a problem when having sex because it would come on just out of the blue.  It got very annoying.  I had a procedure done called an Ablasion and now I dont have a period at all.  It has been wonderful!  I still have the basic symptons but no bleeding or cramping.

That is what I'm hoping for, the ablasion instead of a hysterectomy.. it all depends on the biopsy and ultrasound..*grumbles*...
I'm all too familiar with clots.  and cramps. and bleeding for 4 weeks out of the month (yes, I KNOW there are only 4 weeks in a month, lol).  Having to worry about ruining the sheets or the mattress itself because the bleeding comes even when it isn't time.

*sighs*

I'm so glad to  have found this thread.   I've been told that I am pre-menopausal. I'm still having a period except recently I've been having one for 3 wks now .This happened a year ago too. The doctor put me on hormones and I felt absolutely horrible and quit taking them. The bleeding stopped by itself and I've  had a regular period until now. Really sucks.  I am having what I assume are hot flashes, I seem to break out in a sweat and feel like I'm in my own personal heat wave every morning for hours and then I"m fine the rest of  the day. I even had my other half put a ceiling in the bathroom so I don't have to stand there fanning myself as I try to get ready for work. I haven't really experienced night sweats.......yet. Lovely I can hardly wait.
Could you tell more about the Ablasion. I guess it's time to go the gyn.dr.

Uterine ablation is a procedure where an instrument is introduced into the uterus through the cervix, under anaesthesia, and the lining of the uterus is burnt - or ablated- away. It heals up as scar tissue which contains little endometrium (which is the tissue that bleeds). There are several different ways of doing it, but the outcome is slight to no periods.
You can't become pregnant after this procedure, so its only for women who are done with child birth - actually there is a chance you could become pregnant, but don't think you can carry to term.
Its a great procedure for women who are having long periods with issues with anaemia and cramping and missing work.

Some of the different methods are  - rollerball which is an electrical ablation using a ball to roll over the endometrium to burn it
another one is where a balloon is introduced into the utereus and water is heated to burn the uteral lining - no water is actually free in the uterus
another - heated water is introduced into the uterus itself and burns the lining
another - a radiofrequency probe is introduced into the uterus and burns the lining with radiofrequence waves.
Like i said, there are several ways of doing the same thing - and your doctor is the one to decide which is best for him and you, depending on what he trained with.

Good luck.

Thanks, thats a pretty good start for her for information.  I'm looking forward to getting it done... I am way too familiar with cramping like knives, anemia and long periods ...but the only way I miss work is when I'm spending too much time in the bathroom.. being a single parent makes it impossible to miss work unless I can't move.
I have a new job with no sick time yet :(  so I'm hoping for the balloon ablation close to the weekend so that I can use it to recoup.

Maya2001 -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/29/2008 7:20:47 PM)

I started perimenopausal symptoms at around age 40 night sweats and hot flashes they were a pain but manageable the worst was my raging outbursts  this last lasted about 8 years at which point I started having uterine problem  hemmoraging and fibroid tumor which also had a lot of pain with ..The ER doctor actually recommended hysterectomy over ablasion   for me  though the gyno wanted to do ablasion   but I figure with the abdominal pain   I would go the hysterectomy route instead which was good because it does appear that the fibroid was the cause of the abdominal pains  but   the  the post surgical hotflashs and nightsweats became far ..far worse the first couple months was really bad I would soak bedding a couple times a night and had to get up and change  for comfort and to prevent chills and the hotflashes were extremely close together .... but my biggest problem was moods ..and not rage but tears .... I could start crying and the drop of a hat ..over just about anything and developed depression  .... was starting to slow down when I decided to try the HRT   big mistake because it made them worse again  and more frequent. .. I am now about 10 months post surgery  the night sweats and hot flashes are similar to what they were when I was peri menopausal .. the raging temper has not returned   .. I still have the odd weepy moment   but on the whole my moods swings are more stable than they have been in the last 10 years so a bonus..  sleeping is my bigger obstacle  I wake up after about 2 hours ..then have a hard time getting back to sleep and may take 3 or 4 hours to finally fall back and then  will wake up again after a couple hours. since I work fulltime at a physical job lack of sleep does take its toll. so on weekends I take naps so as too feel more rested .... I did have one relationship shortly after recovering from my hysterectomy   and he really did not have the patience for the moodiness and I did not really have the libido at the time either  so just as well it did not last ... I am drier than I used to be not really bad lubricant can be helpful   when needed ...but after 10 years of hot flashes and night sweat I would be so glad to finally have them over with ..i would much rather deal instead with  period like I had in my  teens to 30s and have 21 good normal day again  a month

what is interesting  is that some women have no symptoms other than peroids stopping , one i know at work had zero hot flashes nightsweats while perimenopausal   and only 2 months when she first went into menopause  and that was it  while others will suffer through 20 + years of  pre and post

Lockit -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/29/2008 7:29:58 PM)

I wonder if having a hysterectomy means a longer time of menopause.  I have been doing the menopause for ten years now... going on eleven and no sign of it stopping any time soon.

oceanwynds -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/29/2008 7:30:30 PM)

Actually i had a complete hyster. almost 10 years ago. Not being in pain all the time was a major relief. I didn't have any menapause symptoms though, and I have known other women who gone through the same procedure who did. Then 8 years later i started having a lot of menapausal symptoms and went to the Dr. I guess for some this is normal. Still i keep my perspective on it positive and just deal the best i can with the symptoms.

Lockit -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/29/2008 7:32:27 PM)

I had my hysterectomy in 87... didn't start the menopause for many years... but once started... I have to ask... how the hell do you shut this shit off?  I cannot take anything for the symptoms.  Not natural or otherwise.

Using lubrication helps some but it is very hard to find one that isnt tacky and sticky.

have you tried the lubrication brand WET... its water based, and i've never had a problem with it being sticky or anything.

MaamJay -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/30/2008 2:21:09 AM)

I had the balloon ablation as day surgery ... as I recall, I took a couple of days of being less active but otherwise was fine. I didn't have big fibroids so a hysterectomy wasn't deemed necessary.

Removal of just the uterus shouldn't have a major effect on menopause (other than no periods of course!) as it is largely the winding down of hormones from the pituitary and ovaries that creates the fallout. If you have had a complete hysterectomy ie ovaries removed, then you go through more or less instant onset of menopause which may require some intervention and hormones to deal with.

Good luck to all those other menopausal and near-menopausal women here!

oceanwynds -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/30/2008 10:24:43 AM)

Have you eliminated caffine? That helps with the hot flashes. Do you do any form of exercise? That helps me to get out of the emotional crud and anxiety. i am big on free0 form dancing. Yoga is great too. i keep a journal too near me. Have several notebooks always near me, incase i am  not near my computer. i also know self-hypnosis so can lower my anxiety level with that. i find working with clay helps too. Seriously play dough is fantastic way of releasing anxiety. Crying i just let happen, since it is a cleansing tool. If i get a hot flash at the store, i make a joke out of it. Best to know how to laugh at yourself. On my super bad days, you will find me on my hands and knees scrubbing everything in sight. Makes me realize down there how insignificant my moods are. i find humbleness in doing that. Then there are times where i am just in a nasty mood, and fly off the handle. Gratefully i do not have them that often. When i do, i follow up with an apology. i do not use my menapause as an excuse though for my behavior. Found by not doing that, then i have to take responsibility for all my actions.
i hope this helped. Please feel free to email me if you wish.

oceanwynds I'm also into essential oils and herbs but I find nothing about menopause "joyful" and I seriously doubt I will.  When I can't sleep I can't afford to stay up and be creative, I have to work and work comes early.
Certainly I agree it's probably better to try to be accepting about this process but I can guarantee you that when I am in the middle of feeling like I'm on fire I'm not standing there saying how joyful this is.[:)]

I know 2 others at work  that had hysterectomies from  and their symptoms only lasted a month or 2 and from what it appears was very mild therefore they cannot understand my symptoms and feel I am playing a sympathy card if I mention or start fanning myself or rinsing my face with cold water to try to cool myself down

MistresseLotus -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/30/2008 1:28:40 PM)

Oh those body changes!  The weight re-distribution.  I swear you notice them all in one morning  and.you wonder who stole your boobs and abs during the night.  You just have to eventually come to peace with your body.  You may never be the way you were.. but you can be the best you can be with what you have.

I haven't read the whole thread... has anyone mentioned the badder issues? THAT is more irritating than the hot flashes.

Bladder?

sophia37 -> RE: Oh joy -menopause - what now? (9/30/2008 4:52:56 PM)

The only suffering I have with my age is my energy levels sometimes feel low. That could be for anything and with anyone tho. So, I guess the answer is we deal with our stage in life as we go along. No two women are the same. For me there isnt anything different within me that says, Hey! Im going thru menopause! Maybe its yet to come.

Bladder?

As your body shape shifts.. SOME women find that their bladder drops making  the ol' "crotch grab and run "to the potty necessary at inopportune times.  You find you have traded Kotex for Poise pads. There is only so much Kegles can do for you . So keep an exercise regimen enough to keep your abdominal and pelvic muscles toned.
