LOL Dolf.. like I said earlier.. I am mathematically challenged.. while it facinates me on some level.. I JUST DONT GET IT!!!  LMAO!!

Thorny.. I have NO idea what you just said...LOL

Three people were traveling from Glasgow to London via train. An astronomer, a mathmetician, a physicist.

As they were viewing the passing countryside they espied a black sheep.

Astronomer:  Look at that!!!!! All sheep in Scotland must be black!!!
Mathmetician,  intoning ponderously:  There is provably one sheep in Scotland that is black.

Physicist (after a long disparing sigh):  There exists at least one sheep in Scotland that appears to have at least one black side, when viewed from a moving train....

Bringing you mathematical merriment, by the numbers.......

Edited to add: Ooops thought 6's question was directed at me.

A math poem regarding the Sieve of Eratosthenes.

Sift the Two's and sift the Three's,
The Sieve of Eratosthenes.
When the multiples sublime,
The numbers that remain are Prime.

For those with interest here is a nice simple explanation of the sieve.
http://primes.utm.edu/glossary/page.php?sort=SieveOfEratosthenes

It is only good to a point. A point which we have passed. Now the numbers are too large to be effectively predicted by this method.

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Thirteen Million Digit Prime Number Discovered (9/28/2008 8:57:51 AM)

That was the Simplified explanation?

Gods, no wonder I always hated math classes....

You'd think that someone who was good with both music (which has somewhat of a mathmatical base) and languages (which can be reduced to mathmatics, since it's all symbolic logic) would have an easier time with numbers.

For the life of me, I can't remember.  I do remember that it was 4 solid pages of assembler, and when I read it 3 months later, I couldn't decipher a thing!  (I only commented 4-6 lines of code.)

NumberSix -> RE: Thirteen Million Digit Prime Number Discovered (9/28/2008 9:01:55 AM)

Ah, yeah.........

That sort of shit haunts us all, I look at code I did a week ago, and think----What the fuck was I thinking??????

DomDolf -> RE: Thirteen Million Digit Prime Number Discovered (9/28/2008 9:07:12 AM)

LMAO... I thought I was the only one that did that.

Waking up in the middle of the night and finding the answer I was digging for all week is kinda cool and frustrating all at once too. Especially when the answer requires you to start over.

There's an old joke a few of us had, who wrote code for a living.  It starts off with you reading some code, and going "who was the idiot who wrote this trash"....only to find your own name in the comments!

We also had a rule "speak ill of no one's code, lest you find bugs in your own."

As my boss, who has a PhD in mass spectrometry, said today, someone had way too much free time on their hands.

Speaking of sheep in Glascow, do you know the difference between Mick Jagger and a Scotsman?

Jagger says, "Hey, You, get off of my cloud!"  The Scotsman says, "Hey, MacLeod, get off of my ewe!"

Am I the only one who thinks this is so cool? I'm a giant nerd...I love mathematics.

It's extremely cool, but I find it awkward to agree that they deserve a $100,000.00 prize.

It was offered to "whoever found this number..." or words to that effect.

They didn't.

327 stacked together computers did.

Anyone  truly fascinated by mathematics might want to check out one of my favorite books
