So damn hard for someone to make a decent English version of an Asian horror film? I'm sitting here watching Sundance and one of the scariest and weirdest movies I have ever seen is on, and I know they would botch it. Irritating 

This has been a public service announcement from the committee for movies that don't suck

Primarily, it's because of the money involved. "Hollywood" movies are made with money borrowed from investment firms. As such, they try to make films that are "bankable." (Minimum risk) So, they try to go with storylines and properties which they know have a following, or are proven successes overseas. (This is also the reason they do so many comic book movies, and movies based on old TV shows.) So, they buy the rights to a hit asian horror movie, but feel (probably rightly) that Americans are too stupid to sit through a film with subtitles. So they remake it with an English speaking cast, and "make a few little changes" which they are sure will "improve" on the original. Unfortunately, since so much of the American youth market is ADD, they speed up the pace, and toss any and all "mood," or drawn out scenes, that are there to help generate suspense.

In the end, the product sucks on toast because of it.

I'm with you... screw the Americanized remakes... go find the originals.

Speaking of asian horror, IFC played the classic "The Black Cat" this last weekend. About a pair of ghost who take revenge on the samurai who wrongfully killed them.

I don't, it just annoys the hell out of me when they make one and it sucks. Hurray for netflix

I couldn't  agree more - I HATE remakes - most of the time. I boycott them with all my might [8D] . Particularly sucks when they take a perfectly good foreign film and 'adapt' it to fit 'american tastes', it's true. ~ Sub Titles.

I dunno, that blockbuster "Contains Enough Lead And Chemicals To Kill You"
sure scared the hell out me.

But yeah, when comparing a hundred Asians running across a bridge screaming,
"Mothra Mothra" to the English version of a group of gangbangers taking over
the bridge and screaming, "You wanna piece of this essay?" "Bring it", something
gets lost in the translation.

the one I saw last night was a chinese movie called re-cycle, and it was a freraky head trip for sure. plus it had some amazing special effects, on par with hollywood, but they complimented the movie rather than overwhelming it.

How about a decent horror film period?  I've never seen one.  Though horror is not what I seek out in the movie store either.  I do see the occassional one.

Anyone got any recommendations?  Not the Friday the 13th trash either.  Something that could actually happen, that could be quality.
Not computer enhanced...etc.

Hitchcock, not really "horror" but defintely creepy and atmospheric. plus realistic plot lines

The film industry as it stands now is all about remakes, updated versions with the latest special effects. A simple formula, find a film from the past, a successful box office hit, and fuck about with it, chuck money at it and hope it makes more.

I grew up with Star Wars, having seen each of them at the Cinema, brilliant stuff, and stuff I still watch from time to time. Then came the later additional Star Wars projects, and what a load of bollocks. True, the effects were interesting, but it looked 'plastic' in comparison to the old films. Plastic in that the effects were computer generated and merged with the film, if it was done on film that is. The old Star Wars trilogy actually used models and mock ups which blended well with the film. Myself, all I feel is the film makers have watered down and sanitised what was three excellent films.

Now I see new films coming out and if it is a title I recognise, I tend not to be keen to watch it, as I do not want my good memories smashed. However, I would like to see a full  H.R. Giger artwork inspired film of Frank Herbert's Dune, one of my favourite films, even though it was lacking in places, which I believe was due to funding problems. If that ever happened, then it would have to be with a horror status, or at least a production where UMS aren't keen to see it.

Remember the Twilight Zone?  My mother used to watch those when I was a toddler.  Some of them I still remember.
Which means they made quite the impression on me to remember them after all these years.

Is the series still on somewhere?

amazon has the complete box set for somewhere around 150 last time I looked. I love the twilight zone.

Ringu, The Blair Witch Project (definitely no enhancement of any kind there), Psycho, The Haunting (the 1963 Robert Wise version), Don't Look Now (also known for one of the most beautiful love scenes in the history of cinema), The Exorcist (just saw it again recently, it hasn't lost its edge), Rosemary's Baby (dated, but interesting).

Yes, Rosemary's baby was interesting, I think it was for one scene I actually aquired that film!

Yep, I was a bit freaked when the Blair Witch came out to.  When they billed it as being real.

Then the stars went on interviews and said it was all made up.
No doubt why The Blair Witch 2 failed so miserably.

Forgot about Rosemary's Baby...also have to check out The Haunting..after all its Halloween the right time for movies.

Try the original version (1963) of "The Haunting" .

My theory is that for Asians (I'm thinking of Japanese/Koreans/Chinese here) horror to them is real, not some special affects and known techniques to make you jump out of your chair. Special effects are pretty low tech in Asian films, they try to engage your psychology by concentrating on the depth and subtlety of the story line rather than things that go bump in the night. Their monsters inhabit the real world (our everyday world), not the world of the imagination.

Personally, I despise "torture porn" movies like Saw and Hostel... but I suppose they are a reaction to the disgust we all feel at the US being turned into a a torture state by Bush. Much in the same way the 50's "giant bug" films were dealing witht he fear of the atomic bomb, Saw and Hostel and the rest of the artless trash is trying to work on societal pressure points in the audiance, who are really uncomfortable with the photos from Abu Grahib.

the sarah michelle gellar films were great i thought.... the grudge 1,2...and apparently there's a 3? yikes...

the eye was also another good movie originally made from hong kong...

overall though horror movies are not really that good...you really need to enjoy horror for what it is.... slasher movies make me laugh soo much...zombie movies are just sick..meaning i die from laughing...

one missed call i laughed so hard too...it was another asian remake.
