I totally agree... and I am appreciative of those who let me "borrow" their bandwidth as well.. LOL

we have Tiny-town USA for a phone co and must have their basic phone package to have DSL using only their chosen provider. All for the low low price of 110.00 per month.

Oh, and invest in some really good security software.... as long as you are transmitting your information everytime you sign on, (including passwords, CC numbers, etc.) You might want to be sure than no one nearby can just tune in and steal it. You may recall that a group of guys were recently busted for stealing over one million credit card accounts, by simply parking their van outside of coffee shops equipped with wifi.

yeah when we were living at his trailer an they provided wifi for people in the park, we were able to connect with nothing but a month to month password and a user name, and it was free, as for tech support I want him to call but he says all tech support people are clueless rude idiots, cause he's worked in tech support before, so he refuses to call. hell maybe one day my dad and I'll call and by pass my honey doing it all together lol.

Among the fastest routers available now are Wireless N gigabit routers..

I wouldn't be surprised at unsecured networks at home, but what surprises me is the number of unsecured *business* networks around here....made me think twice about using my debit card in those stores, for sure.

I have family who don't believe I have a wireless network in my house because it doesn't broadcast its existence. You have to know the SSID and the passphrase to get in. Of course, that family happens to be a bunch of moochers who would park in my front yard and eat my bandwidth, so I'm kinda happy they don't realize I have wireless. ;)

I used to use Linksys for everything but their tech support got sketchy after Cisco bought them...long hold times and a refusal to RMA a defective router/card combo ended my love affair with them. Belkin's okay and their support is great (and last time I called AMERICAN!), but I've fallen for Dlink even if they can be a little expensive. A complete idiot can set up a secured network with Dlink without calling tech support and rangewise they handle obstacles like plumbing and whatnot a lot better. They have a great wireless print server for those with older USB printers or ethernet networkable printers (4 usb ports and an ethernet port) for about $100 if you don't want to pony up the money for a printer with built-in wireless networking support. I have an ancient usb laser printer, an older USB scanner, and a brand new ethernet photo printer hooked up and shared between 4 laptops in the house. It took about 20 minutes to set up (because you have to put a file for each printer on each computer) but wasn't difficult at all.

Frankly, I bought an Apple Express(Airport) before it even went on the market. About 90 dollars, It takes cable or DSL. I have had it for 6 years. All you do is plug it into an electric socket and put the ethernet cable in. Its never given me trouble except for an occasional reset and much less need to reset than many other routers I have seen. It works brilliantly and you can even route your music through it.
