Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Sorry.  That's as close as I get.  Oh.  And there was that Metallica tune, Mama Said...

Ok  Confession time.  First, I love Country.  Especially roots, R&B, Alternative C&W, Austin sound and New orleans.  Actually almost anything except the "Nashville Sound" of modern pop-radio (tho I will sing along to Garth Brooks and Tim McGraw).   And I like the fine old stuff (Haggard, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, hell...Roseanne Cash).  Alejandro Escobedo.   The Dhuks.   Almost anything they play on XM Cross-Country.

So why the confession?  Because....I really, really like Toby Keith.   His politics suck.   He's overly produced.  But he's clever, and funny, and dammit I love his stuff.

That's it.  My cool sophisticated cover is blown.

E.

Buddy of mine's kid plays guitar in the Randy Rogers band. They're pretty good. Good songwriting. http://www.randyrogersband.com/ Me, I listen to classical, 60s rock, some jazz (esp. swing), blues, a little Punk, and some 80s & 90s Alternative (primarily Paisley Underground, Manchester, etc.) Oh yeah, starting to get into "New Roots" music (like the Dukhs)

This vid's Randy at the Gruene Town Hall. My ex and I had a mini-vacation around that area back in the late 80s, stayed at the B&B (sort of) right next door. Stayed in the corn crib, which was kinda like a studio/loft setup. Asleep At The Wheel played that night. Until about 2 AM. Some fine music. Long-necks and the Two-step.

There's some other shitty hand-held vidcam vids. Why people can't learn how to use them without shaking I don't know.

The recently departed Jerry Reed (like Chet) still provides inspiration when it comes to hot guitar licks.

Good Lord, I forgot to mention Jerry Reed.  I was born in '75.  I remember Smokey and the Bandit and the CB craze.  My father gave out CBs on Christmas to all my relatives.  We had one in our station wagon.  I forget the handle my dad and mom used.  [:D]  Thanks Jerry Reed and Burt Reynolds.

My cool cover is already blown, so I will admit it.  I love Randy Travis.  I love the song, "Diggin Up Bones"  so much I learned to play it on my guitar.  My late grandmother would beg me to sing that song to her.  It really embarrassed me to play in front of folks before she died.  She specifically asked for me to sing a gospel song at her funeral.  I was so choked up that I declined.  I regret that decision to this day.

cravesdom -> RE: Favorite country artists. (9/30/2008 6:54:35 PM)

I love country music. Along with a ton of other kinds of music. My CD collection is very eclectic. But my favorite country artists are Johnny Cash, George Jones, Reba, Allison Krauss, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, and Tricia Yearwood.

I am sick of politics, and I am sick of the offerings of current music artists.  I am a big fan of older country music (I think the new stuff is pop music, and it sucks.)  I was sitting here listening to one of my favorite songs Amarillo by Morning by George Strait, and the idea of this thread came to me.  We've had a few threads on rock artists, so I thought I'd be different and rear my hillbilly head.

I love Hank Williams, Red Sovine, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, George Strait, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and many others.  Any thoughts?

Well ya know sb....

Alt country is really a throw back. Acts like Dwight Yokam, The Mavericks, Lyle Lovett The Derailers, Junior Brown, Steve Earle ect... You might want to try some Alt/Americana music stations.

The DNA of Alt comes from three you didn't mention, Wille (Red Headed Stranger is one of the greatest records of all time), Buck Owens and David Alan Coe.

Did someone mention Steve Earle?  How did I forget him.....Alt country at it's finest:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Tc700Yi8KQ

Ok, it appears to be obvious that I'm also dropping the "cool sophisticated cover"!  Yeah...the first concert I went to was a Loretta Lynn show at The Civic....I was 7 or 8 years old and she looked like a beautiful princess in her long yellow dress.

NuevaVida -> RE: Favorite country artists. (9/30/2008 9:57:37 PM)

I like old country, too.  New country is just "rock with hats" in my opinion.

Emmy Lou Harris
Dolly Parton
Jerry Reed
Johnny Cash
Merle Haggard
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Patsy Cline
Loretta Lynn

Does Charlie Daniels Count?  Love him, too.

I wouldn't know George Strait, George Jones or Red Sovine if we were shooting pool at roadside bar together.  But this guy I would pay the cover charge to see if I ever happen to be visiting the middle of nowhere.......

Years and years ago I saw a "Hallmark Lite" card that had a picture of a seal on a doorstep, with a bow around its neck.  On the inside of the card it said, "You picked a fine time to leave me your seal."

Makes me chuckle whenever I heard that song.
