I was speaking with a friend the other night, and he asked me about the meaning of the colour of a collar.  To be honest, I just sort of stared blankly and shrugged.  It wouldn't surprise me if the colours had different meanings and significance, but, be damned if I know what they are or would be.

I guess I'm asking if anyone out there might be able to shed some light on this subject for me.  Thanks.

I think the color of a collar means the person who picked it out liked that color.......lol sorry I know I wasn't any help.

No problem.  That's pretty much my view on it also.

The one collar I own, that I bought myself because I wanted it is black with hearts on it. The black expresses my dark soul and the hearts are metal and ontop of the black so it means I want a strong lover to save me from the black abyss that is my life.

Or maybe I just got it because I like hearts and it was pretty.

LOL, shiny good!

Got my pets collar because the colours complimented his complexion and eyes nicely, and the size worked well on his build and neck.  *shrug*

Fox has several collars. Some of the ones for photos are black, the color means they show up better in pictures. He has 2 that are silver. Their color means they are made of metal.
His everyday one is brown... it means that I have brown hemp at home and so thats what he got.

Good.  So far it's looking like I was not just kept out of some sort of secret society information here.

When I hear about collars and colors I think back to Mistress Steel's website.  That's the very first place I ever read about the 3 stages of collars...and that each HAD to be a certain color.  I've always wondered if she made up those stages of collars.

Am I right in thinking that people in the Gorean lifestyle take colours quite seriously?

I'm not sure if that is for collars in Gor, but i'm sure it could flow over to collar colours in some peoples minds.

My Westie also has several collars.  The one I made for him is dark reddish brown because that was the color of leather available that day.  It was pretty.  It was the correct thickness and it was soft enough to be pliable and comfortable.  I also find 'All Black All the time' to be dreadfully boring.  He also has his silver choke chain that I prefer as a 'training collar'.  All subs start with that - but that's just me.  He has a black studded 'show' collar that he wore when I was showing him off at a convention because A: that's the color most readily available with studs on it and B: It matched my black and silver dress.  However, the metal was causing a nasty irritation on his neck so we bought him a very simple black one, again, to match my outfit.

The colors don't really mean anything...  Much like the color of my shoes don't say anything other than, "It looks good with this outfit."

Both Goreans and some 'households' have particular colors or styles of collars that are relevant. Knowing what color was asked about might be helpful, but the biggest issue is that these specific preferences for collar color or style somehow became spread through the community as some kind of standard.

We have different collars for different types of service in our household, but I don't publish anything about it, just because there is that tendency for people to read something and then try to apply it to every other situation they ever encounter.

I had no idea there was a code, I would be delighted if there was one, then I could ignore it. I always buy girls purple  velvet collars with diamante, ornamented with a little gold charm bracelet cat on a little link

DV, I damn near lost my rum in a fit of giggles!  Rum shooting out the nose is bound to be unpleasant!

A collar color chart, that is what my subbie handbook is missing...I thought someone tore that page out.

Mine is black and shiny, with pretty pokey studs...this means that I like shiny things, and that I am part crow.

And if the location of the clubhouse somehow gets in BK's hands, don't worry, we can quickly convert it back to a meat processing warehouse, a la Seinfeld.

I have several different colored collars... roughly translated, they mean this:

"This is pretty. I will put it on."

Mine's black and purple velvet.

I had two thoughts when I got it. They were deep and profound, and will be the basis of world philosophy for years to come.

1) Pretty!!!
2) FUZZY!!

OOOOOOOoooooooo!

I gave Sherry a fancy chain link Collar as the first one. Then we bought a nice set of 4 red and patten black Torvea Cuffs. Red is her favorite color, so we had Torvea custom make us a Collar to match the cuffs. I put a picture of them on my profile, taken in front of a red Coke cooler.

In some cases colors used in a collar can indicate sexual activity preferences a la the "hanky code." I have a basic black leather collar that was made for me from garment leather tri-folded and stitched that has a plastic snap buckle from a dog collar. For Folsom this year I also got a new collar from the pet store simply because it's bad ass. It's a Rogz brand collar in blue with puppy paws on it. I got it because I couldn't decide between the red that would match the outfit I wanted to wear or the blue because I liked it better. Ended up with the blue and the matching leash because my top decided she wanted me to look like Krypto the Super Puppy.

Good morning.  ~smiles~

Really, the "colors" are limited even in the books to very certain circumstances (ie a Slaver's House where the color might be made from enameled steel or have a silk "sleeve" over the metal, and colors ~might~ indicate something specific within that *house*) but by and large, there's no "Secret Color Code" even among Goreans aside from "Master likes this."  ;)

Then again there are about as many differet *types* of collars on Gor as there are cultures, so.... leather, steel, iron, rope, wood, etc etc etc...
