The bailout has been passed.

*I* had no voice in the matter.

This is rather unprecedented,
the Senate voting on something which the House had voted down.

Ah well, the notion of 'votes' has thus been proven to be merely theoretical.
Oh, and not in a GOOD way, neither.

Well, the fact the Senate voted for it does not take away from the fact that the House voted it down. The House still has to agree on it before it gets sent to the President. Which may or may not happen, we'll see. I don't see how it's uprecedented...the House and the Senate have always worked like that.

Don't doubt, folks, that some bailout will be passed, and soon. And it will be the "little" citizens that pay for it.

It has always been a rigged game folks, and the major players won't let go the reins short of pitch forks and torches..

As I understand it, under the Constitution, the House of Representatives was made responsible for initiating any legislation with respect to appropriations, and than the Senate has its shot. That is how it is done..normally. However, the Senate could initiate as they did this evening by attaching legislation to previous legislation sent to that side of the Capital from the House. I guess that's how they got around normal procedure tonight. Maybe someone else is more familiar with the Rules...

Senate has the power to amend and/or reject bills of that nature, as I recall. Which would explain how they got to do it. They amended it and voted on it. That's how I understand it, anyway. Still, both branches of Congress have to agree on the exact same bill.

No. Bills can and do originate in either the House or Senate.

Yes, but expenditure bills only originate in the House. They -can- originate in the Senate, but the House will refuse to look at them because they claim that its their sole right. It's kind of a long lasting dispuste...Senate can originate them, but the House never considers them. The Senate also has no right to initiate any kind of bills imposing taxes, again, as I recall. I could very well be wrong.

So, let me see if I understand, people were outraged that the government would plop 700 billion out for trash, so in order to get it passed they still approved the 700 billion and added another 100ish billion worth of stuff we have no way of paying for.

Well, that makes complete sense. And now all the politicians have seen the light and its good for america. LOL.

Yup. If it weren't an election year, you'd have to approach an investment banker's chosen representative on bended knee, hand over your paycheck, and say "Thank you sir, would you like another?"

This way, they just do the whole thing via mail and save you the travel. Lacks the ceremony, but in tough economic times we all have to make sacrifices.

I suspect all we're seeing is a dog and pony show, to let the little people know what a "tough decision" it was for them to pass the bill.

To just allow Bush's original bill to pass would have raised too many eyebrows, not to mention that it didn't have any sweeteners added to it.

Nope, not surprised at all. This is actually unconstitutional on it's face. I don't remember the exact wording in the constitution, but to the effect, all bills expending money must originate in the House. Yes, I'm sure they find a "parlementary" way around it. Both senators are for the payola (and payola IS the correct term) we're all gonna get screwed. Buy stock in KY, might as well enjoy it.

At least in the Senate I truly did not have a voice…I didn’t vote for either of them. Sooo if things go wrong I can now blame all the people who did vote for them.

The house vote will also not be by representatives I voted for so I’m off the hook and can bitch if things go bad.

If things go right I’ll say that what we pay them for.

I can’t loose…except my life savings…I will be praying...and have my fingers crossed.

I think we can give both parties a break… In this mess they mean well and will do their best…Just wish they had also done there best over the last 8 years.

I personally plan on calling, writing or emailing my corrupt representatives everyday to remind them who they work for, and that their jobs are on the line come midterm. I may not matter now, but I have plenty of time to sharpen the proverbial axe and have others do the same.

Depends on what you mean by "temporary". The Great Depression was "temporary". It lasted about a decade and required a World War to end it.
