Joe Six pack and maverick are getting old

Actually, I get sick of hearing 'nukular' as well, because it sounds so fucking stupid. Sorry [&:] .

I like hearing the differences in accents and language usage from different people.  It would be boring if we all sounded like newscasters.  I find the inability of folks in New England to pronounce the letter "R" to be comical, but I don't call them stupid.  The "nucular" pronunciation is incorrect, but very few of us speak correctly all the time.  Bill Clinton pronounced it that way throughout his Presidency, because he's from the Mid-South.  I know, because I grew up in the same region.  I had to force myself to pronounce it correctly when it was pointed out to me.  I also used to pronounce wash as "warsh" and February as "Feb-yoo-airee."

Articles have been written about the "nucular" pronunciation, but it was only when Bush was noted for doing it.  Eisenhower, Clinton, and Carter were all guilty of it as well.

DomKen -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/2/2008 9:06:47 PM)

I watched this with interest.

Palin exceeded expectations but a few points really bugged me.

First and most irritating was her refusal to stay on the subject of the questions. I don't expect a politician to directly answer most questions but she went far afield several times clearly in order to mention all her talking points.

Second was her answer about climate change. If the cause isn't known then how could you propose any action as a solution. She tacitly admitted it is anthrogenic by advocating an emissions cap but tried to not actually say it directly.

An actual maverick doesn't refer to herself that way. That seems a pretty desperate attempt to keep saying it over and over.

Finally, and this actually baffled me, she needs to trim her bangs. When she started the debate her hair was in her eye. I doubt world leaders are likely to take very seriously a person who has to continually blink because her hair is in her eyes. Why she was sent out in front of HD cameras like that was simply surreal.

Sanity -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/2/2008 9:12:05 PM)

Do you think those choked-up tears of Joe's were for real, or does he have to practice that.

I'm not voting for Obama or for McCain...........but
I thought Palin gave the most direct answers. She stayed on topic.
Biden got choaked up.......generally I would have been moved but I think that I'm jaded when it comes to politicains anymore.

Palin did not give the answer I wanted to hear on the war on Iraq but she did on energy.

So I would have to say it went Palin tonight.

But neither convinced me to vote for their running mate.

I agree the slogans get tiresome after the 20th iteration.

Palin did good, for being a freshman to big boy politics, and it's obvious she is cramming, I'd give her an A, she'll be lying with the best of them shortly. Biden well, he's just a old politician, judging as equals in spin laden non-informative debate terms Biden won, but that is just because he's used to it, moreso than Palin, IMO.

I think it's interesting though how they blame the whole bailout on the greedy financials that's just half the story, and didn't blame the failed socialist leaning policies of Fannie and Freddie. It's the mixture that was deadly, neither could have brought this about with out the other, IMO. Oh, and no mention of the glorious leader "Bernanke" and his new "Robin" Paulson.

In the end it was a lot of talk about very non-important stuff, overall. As they argue over Iraq, but not the issue that led to it, which is the US's total bent on policing the world and hyper military mindset. They talk about Israel, as if it's part of this country, I absolutely don't care about Israel, as in zero. I personally don't know anyone that does.

I heard nothing about change, only variation on the story already being told. One wants a pinch of government that, one wants a pinch of government this, when the stew is lacking meat, not fucking spices.

Call me jaded I guess.

Palin was the only that spoke anything relating to my values, but I believe it is in words only. "Government getting out of peoples way", well, that is sorta hard when you are dead set on spending trillions on bloated military. Biden saying people wanted "help" about made me sick, people don't want "help", they want opportunity. At least the non-worthless people that I care about.

over all it was an exercise in verbal masturbastion, about the same as this post. LOL.

Lorr47 -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/2/2008 9:12:37 PM)

What surprised me was the independent voters as to the debate on CBS.  They overwhelmingly said Biden won the debate, and 98% said Biden was more knowledgeable on the issues.  And, since McCain today  withdrew his people and resources from Michigan, maybe the debates do not make any difference.  About the only time we will hear from McCain in the future are the debates.  He has traumatized the Republicans I know in Michigan.  After Warren Buffet again publically endorsed OBama yesterday, Republicans have that blank stare look in Michigan.

vegasspanks -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/2/2008 9:13:45 PM)

After going back and reading the transcript as well as watching most of the debate (stupid late work hours), I feel like Biden spent more time hitting important points and discussing actual things that had happened and what was on his principle's platform.  Palin dipped far too often into the deep well of rhetoric that I have long been tired of, though Biden is not without sin in this regard either.  All in all though, I think if Palin winked at me one more time I was going to reach through the screen and poke her eye out.  I am a voter to be impressed, not a judge in a beauty pageant.

I listened to half the speech in my car on the way home tonight.
If you just listen to what she says and you are not "looking" at her,
you would just shake your head.
People need to seriously wake up.

Archer -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/2/2008 9:18:44 PM)

There were a few more points scored on Palins side that got missed so far. They were not unexpected and Biden smiled knowing that they had to come out some time.
Palin delivered them with just the right tone. (kinda the You knew this was comming and here it is Senator Biden) and to his credit Senator Biden smiled and took it the same way "yep I knew it was comming go ahead") Those were the 3 or so times when she brought out Biden's statements about McCain vs Obama during the primary.

Who won depends on how you want to grade the debate, on how well they knew the issues Biden won but not by as much as many aprtisans would like to believe.
On who connected better I think Palin connected better, but my libertarian leaning may have some to do with that evaluation. Judged on how many hits on the their opponents I think Palin scored more hits (but i think Biden held back a bit so as not to appear mean, handlers and advisors coached him well on that point)
I have no real doubt that Biden could have hammered her harder on several issues, but she held her own and jabbed enough to get her points and not actually provoke Biden into a real fight.

Who's the better VP candidate Likely Biden but we can't vote for just the bottom of the ticket.
Who's better prepared for the top of the ticket has to be asked as well.
Personally I think McCain and Palin is the better ticket even though Palin has alot of issues she scares me on.

That said niether ticket is getting my vote, I'll be tossing away my vote on Barr and the Libertarian ticket as my protest vote against the extreamism ruling both parties.

DomKen hit it on talking points. The thing about parrots is that they don't understand what they are saying.

smilingjaguar -> RE: So what did you think of the debate? (10/2/2008 9:23:51 PM)

I thought it was nice to finally see Palin put her big girl panties on, but it really annoyed me the way she would ignore the question and go off on her other rants about energy or McCain being a maverick or whatever.  Of course she did better than everyone thought.  She walked upright and spoke in somewhat intelligent sentences, which is more than most of America was expecting following the Couric interview.

Biden did better than I thought he would.  I saw him hold out on attacking Palin when he could have really skewered her...getting the name of the general in charge in Afghanistan wrong, for one.  I was impressed with how genuine his emotions were when talking about the death of his wife and being a single parent of 2 boys.  He knew his stuff and I think will be a great asset to Obama.

That's where I saw him as being a sick caricature of your typical lifelong career politician... dragging out his dead wife and kid for a few cheap political points that way.

Sniff. [:(]

More power to those voting for third parties, the two party system needs to just roll over and die already.

In defense of Biden against Sanity's post, he didn't play that card until Palin tried too hard to paint herself as supermom.  He had the capacity to respond in kind and took it, and it actually made me feel like he was a little more human when he almost lost it there.
