I love my online friends. They know who I really am. Its not like I talk to my vanilla chums about the scene that went wrong. These forums have changed my mind about friendship. This is a wonderful and supportive community. Thank you all for your love, support, kindness, truth even when it hurts and loads of ROTFLMAO!!!

Apologies for not getting back before now to make a reply

Thank you to everyone who has shared their thoughts about this...I haven't really thought about the differences in online vs 'real'  friends before so I was curious about other peoples thoughts.

I agree with many people who have said that they do not make a distinction between their friends.  Thinking some more about this today I realised that I actually often talk with my online friends more as I sometimes hesitate to phone my best friends due to living interstate now and not wanting to disturb them as many have partners and little ones.

Also if it is late at night and I am feeling lonely, upset etc I pretty much always can find one of my friends from the USA/Canada around to talk with which fits in well as I tend to be too busy during the day to think about asking for a shoulder to cry on so if anything...some of my online friends know much more about the difficulties when I have them than my real life friends.

Oh no...I think that was a very long run-on sentence!

Yeah, Wanders... I'm the same way.. there are times when THIS is the only place I can express some feelings/ issues/etc.. either by email or posting.

ONe of the best friends I've ever had I met from AOL.  THere is NOTHING I wouldnt do for her (Missokyst knows who I am speaking of).  We've spent time together (Not nearly as much as I'd like).  But our friendship was forged via an AOL chatroom.

ugh...I am trying to respond to everyone however I just know I am missing people out...apologies...it is a reflection of my lack of computer skills rather than of your words

Still, I do think there is a difference between any sort of long distance relationship where the primary contact is via net or phone versus someone you spend physical time with. I won't argue that one is more valid that the other, just different in many ways. I know what I prefer but to each their own.

Yes I definitely agree with this LaT.  I am really looking forward to meeting my two friends in person and seeing how our friendship changes (or ends if we all hate each other ha ha) from a tesxt based one to a real life one and then changes back again to a text based one when they return to the USA.

Woohoo...speaking of which I LOVE that postcrossing site...my first postcard has been received from someone in Finland...my friends have joined it as well.

according to my landlord... NO.  your an acquantance...

grins...I am intrigued that you and your landlord had a conversation about this...so are you two friends or acquaintances?

I agree

on the other hand, my bffs are the ones who reside in my inner circle.  i see and meet them in real life for coffee or dinner to a fun night on the town.

One thing I really miss is not seeing my best friends in real life any more ... mind you, the person I consider to be my best friend in the whole world and I probably see each other once a year and only talk on the phone once a month or so ...yet I would drop everything for her in a heartbeat and vice versa.

I use to consider people as simply online acquaintances, but after a life-threatening medical crisis last week and the concern showed by these "acquaintances", not to mention the phone call from Australia,  those people are forever in my heart as friends.

smiles...yes I love the support shown by people on here when anyone is struggling...there are many beautiful and caring souls on here

Without the internet and even back to the old bbs system, I would be friendless. Over the years I have become very close with my internet friends and usually if possible meet them eventually. While some are still far away, we keep in touch with each other and maintain that of a close friend.

My best friend I met through the internet some 11 years ago, gags seeing that in writing is boggling. It started out as an invite to NJ from Texas to a fetish party she was giving, and I went with a mutual friend (well not really she lost favor quickly) and she spent 5 year convincing me to move up the NJ with her and her husband which I did end up doing, a financial crisis sent me back to Texas for 2 years and now Im back up here where we can visit again. We arent just best friends, we are now related by blood since my daughter gave her belly and her time to surrgate a child for them. She is now 3 years old and still part of my life. I would drop everything for my friend and my other family,  and she would do the same.

Im blessed with the quality of friends via online, without regard to whether I have actually met or not. Some come and go, while others are lifelong friends.

my online friends are friends.  Fortunately, some have become RL friends, and similar to DV , when i meet online friends face-to-face, it's more like a high-school reunion than a first meeting.

i love knowing if i have a bad day, or a joke, or a happy news report, i can send out mass emails, and get some love in return.  i truly felt like getting on a plane and hitting Cali's ex in the kneecaps with a Louisville Slugger(lots of bending involved on my part...and let me point outthat i have nothing against "little people" and enjoy Verne Troyer in all the Austin powers movies) just as much as i wanted to when one of my best friends of many years was dealing wth similar issues.  i get all gooey eyed when lushy or christine or any of us have a break-up, and all joyfull over the moon when they find hot new Daddies, i pray for Things 1 and 2, and i cry when some of you lose loved ones, i pray for people on long journeys to Texas, and Texan friends from whom i miss receiving emails after Ike.  Just like i would for any other friends.

The TDHO laughs when i try to underplay how important my CM friends are to me.  Something will happen, and He figures "they know" pretty soon afterwards. (though i am getting better LOL)  i have a bunch of RL  friends i've accumulated during my lifetime, all over the world...(i am a lucky girl)  but i still value my online friends, and the connection i share with them is no less than any others...often we have more of a connection.  Not all of my RL friends are happy that i let guys "boss me around" or that i seem to be overly fond of cocksucking.  But the Pimpettes??? Hell, we hold emergency cock-sucking advice and intervention meetings!!!!
