and it was the Democrats that did it by a ratio of nearly 3:1.   Stock market fell a little.   Whats going on ?

bipolarber -> RE: "the rescue package"? has passed (10/3/2008 12:32:07 PM)

sfs,

So which version is this? The one that McCain suspended his campaign for, only to gum up the works? Or is this the one that the senate tacked on that extra $150 billion in pork first? If so, then the only thing McCain succeeded in doing was a delay ... which caused the Dow to plunge 500 points (costing the economy almost 1 trillion dollars)... plus costing us more in "earmarks" which he said he's been against.

Kinda gives you some idea about hos his administration will be run... if we should be so unlucky as to have him in office.

LaTigresse -> RE: "the rescue package"? has passed (10/3/2008 12:33:38 PM)

Oh yippie.

Actually it was a nation of hysterical fools that passed it, all pressuring their congresspeople and representatives.

If GW wants to do something grand for the country (for once) he would not sign it. Unfortunately I don't think he's got it in him.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: "the rescue package"? has passed (10/3/2008 12:35:25 PM)

What's going on is you have a lot of Congressmen scared shitless of losing their jobs.  I am betting a lot of them are going to.

Casie -> RE: "the rescue package"? has passed (10/3/2008 12:57:24 PM)

This just outrages me. Most Americans did not want this and our congress forgets who they represent and pass it anyhow. It's ridiculous. We the people have lost all our power and all any one can care about is that Palin has a pregnant daughter and Obama might have Muslim ties. Wake up people.

The congress was pressured not by the American people but by the president and big business.  Some congress people were even saying they were threatened that American would be under martial law if it did not pass. Here is a c-span video of one congressman talking about it http://www.c-spanarchives.org/flash/player-time.html?start=2008-10-02%2020:06:57&stop=2008-10-02%2020:18:45&net=1

I have my pen right here in my pocket.

will make them famous, and you will know their names.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, How's about------- John McCain?

while I agree that the money for rum is necessary, the rest is pork.

Another principled ideal that is apparently velleity.

Buy the rumor, sell the news. I haven't quite got Wall Street figured out, but I know that one. Unfortunately I have a feeling that due to the dragging out, watering down and bickering over this bill that it isn't going to build the confidence needed to get things moving. I don't think it sent a clear message that there is a strong, confident, capable leader at the wheel of this ship. So the rats are jumping.

Not sign it?  He was the biggest one up there whining and pleading like a simpering puppy "Pleeeeaaaaase pass it!"  It gives him and his cronies nearly unfettered reign over nearly 700bil, right before they walk away from office.  He's off in his oval office doing his happy chimp dance as we speak.

'Don't buck the Fed'.  thats an important one too.

And spelling Nazi that I am you have misspelled this, what you meant to say is,

So the inflation rate is jumping too.

Since we don't have 700 bill in hard cash laying about and real stuff will have to be traded for this, and there is a hook that in 5 years the president MUST initiate legislation to recoup any losses on the investment, anyone who sells their bad paper at less than a hella discount is looking to take the money and run.

Wow it is amazing that President Bush's 'Financing Failure Bill' was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate and House.

Now, regardless if Senator McCain or Senator Obama is elected, both have voted to continue the policies of the current administration. It represents their integrity.

On a positive note, the definition of 'Change' has been established. The bad assets on the balance sheets of Corporations have now CHANGED to be bad assets on the balance sheet of the USA.

I trust everyone will be supporting for the reelection of all these fine folks, of both parties, who have committed with their vote to continuing the fine work being done by this Administration.

NumberSix -> RE: "the rescue package"? has passed (10/3/2008 4:18:53 PM)

Well, I consider it a great portent that 192 million goes for rum.

Buncha rummy motherfuckers up there anyway.

Well, voting wise----

Eat, DRINK, and be merry, for tomorrow you shall be kicked the fuck to the curb.

I am one pissed-off motherfucker, and wrote all my goddamn slime ball fuckwad Congressmen and women (using the big C to include senate) that I will chair the national committe to elect used toilet paper to congress before I will support them for shit-eater from here on out.

CRITICAL ITEMS GETTING MONEY TO RESOLVE THE CURRENT "CRISIS"
 ~ or ~
YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK

For the record, so far this is what I've found in the 'Rewarding Failure' legislation:

quote:

  •  “Motorsports racing track facilities” A Bloomberg article notes this “will save NASCAR track builders $109 million this year.”
  • Rum producers in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
  • Investors in the District of Columbia or on Indian reservations.
  • Building and renovating restaurants.
  • Book donations to public schools
  • Recipients of settlement payments from Exxon Valdez litigation
  • Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Program,” expected to cost $3.2 billion over six years

Source: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=28851

Also noteworthy from the same source:

quote:

The most egregious, most frightening aspect of this bill is its hidden attack on every aspect of our economy under the cover of anti-carbon measures contained in what is essentially an energy bill tacked on to the bailout -- an energy bill which would not pass Congress were it to come up for a vote.  If you own a power plant, a steel factory, a dairy farm, or an airline company, or maybe even just a car, this is a large caliber weapon aimed directly at you.  It’s the predicate to taxing carbon emissions.

Section 116 of the bill adds language to the tax code which includes “industrial source carbon dioxide” in a list of items which can be classified as sources of “qualified income,” along with things like fertilizer and timber.  However, since nobody produces “industrial source CO2” as a product for sale, this change is unclear.

the bailout bill also contains the “Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008,” which is also known by the bill number S.558.  The measure requires group insurance plans to have deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and annual and lifetime limits for mental health and drug addition/abuse coverage which are no more restrictive or expensive for the policy holder than those same items for other medical and surgical coverage. The measure would apply to firms with 50 or more employees.

The full CBO report makes the following statements:

-- “The direct costs of the mandate (on the private sector) in S. 558 would be $1.5 billion in 2009, rising to $3.4 billion in 2013.”
-- “Enacting S. 558 would increase federal direct spending for Medicaid by $280 million over the 2009-2012 period and by $790 million over the 2009-2017 period.”  There are also another $485 million of “discretionary costs” by 2017.
-- “More of an employee's compensation (will be) received in the form of nontaxable employer-paid premiums, and less in the form of taxable wages… CBO estimates that federal tax revenues would fall by $140 million in 2009 and by $3 billion over the 2009-2017 period.”
-- “Responses would include reductions in the number of employers offering insurance to their employees and in the number of employees enrolling in employer-sponsored insurance…”

The results of good intent?
quote:

The bill doubles the subsidy for biodiesel production from 50 cents per gallon to $1.00 per gallon.  Doesn’t the Senate realize that we can’t save the world by burning our food? Did they not remember the huge increase in food prices over the past two years due in large part to these subsidies diverting food and feed crops into our gas tanks?

Well, on the plus side he's come a long way since reading that kids' book as the twin towers fell -seven years of effort and application later, he can now sign his name.

Also on the plus side, the Pound hit 1.28 against the Euro today; best rate for seven months. If it keeps up, it means a monthly cost reduction at work that's worth more than my new (second hand) Jag.

LOL, and it would have to be.  Nearly two thirds of the house is up for re-election and you won't see three to one until after the election rout.  Look for those types of disparity after January.

That is all.

the 'Rewarding Failure' legislation:

I think that this is the right name for this bit of legislation. It's a reactionary pork-laden piece of crapola that will patch things up just enough to keep us from having to actually address any of the problems it is supposed to solve - for now.  When the shit starts hitting the fan, we'll be on to the next election cycle and it will be someone else's problem.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: "the rescue package"? has passed (10/3/2008 6:12:53 PM)

Actually, while I couldn't care less about NASCAR, the bill didn't "save" them any money, it only compressed the deductions they already had legally into a time frame of about 1/2 what it was before.

Same dollars.

Might be something there to bitch about regards net present value, opportunity costs....stuff like that, but the dollars are the same, just compressed so they can get the money sooner.

That is so untrue. I, and most American citizens, resent the allegation.

For instance, I care which bikini Brittany is wearing on the Mexican beaches, and what Paris is wearing out to Butter tomorrow night.

See, we do have more important things on our minds than the STATUS AND FUTURE OF THE FREE WORLD.
