The subject comes up once in a while.

I refuse to have one, and if I ever do it will be turned off unless I am stuck somewhere. Wanna know why ?

Because when I am stuck I either call cab or a tow truck, there are very few people I would call, unless I am local to them. Family is different. But for the most part, if I am broke down at two in the morning my mechanic is sleeping. Yes I might call someone for a ride, but that is it. And I won't call their cellphone, because who knows where they are ?

I won't have a cellphone because I am not your towing company, mechanic, civil disturbance rectifier or anything else. I am not your doctor, or your lawyer, nothing of the sort. The only type of problem I am the one to call for is one that would require me to grab my gun, and even that is not likely.

I am not a public service, when I need a tow I call a towing company, if I ever had the need I could just call 911. If you need me to handle things like that, I don't know you. I have no towtruck, set of tools and truck full of parts to fix your car, nothing of the sort. There are only a few certain sets of circumstances when I could help anyone, and though it has happened, I was at home at the time the call came in.

I will not leave work for you, I will not leave a tryst for you and I am not your keeper. I am also not your shrink, so if you need someone to talk to, learn to read. Or write.

I am not an EMT, I do not know CPR and I am not all that good of a fighter anymore.

I am not in business at the moment, I don't provide any emergency repairs to anything, most of my good tools are at work. I am basically useless.

Why would you have to get ahold of me anytime anywhere ?

I would rather freeze to death walking home from a car wreck with a tree or something than to call someone.

Why would you need my number, and just as important, why would I need your's ?

Uhm........ I can only guess you have few family and friends you wish to talk to or they to you? People you need to call for business, either professional or personal?

You see, for me, it is much less expensive than having a land line now.

The neighbor in the back is so busy gabbing on her cell as she comes and goes- I would be in the way if I said hi.

I have a prepaid. and I carry it with me when I drive...it also can take pictures - so I enjoy that. A cell phone that doesn't have service will STILL reach 911.  911 in many areas will fetch a tow truck. I-80 for instance some tows can go there due to insurance reasons.

Mostly the cell is for visiting family. If I am out driving ...I can check is my brother etc are still at said location. It saves gas and time as their life is very fluid.

Hey Term, how is that jack working out????

I use a cellphone to talk to new contacts until I get to know them, then when my kids pick up the land line and it's a fruit cake, I know it isn't anyone I've been talking to.

I have a prepaid cell with auto top up....since I am often on the road driving after dark  I like the safety of being able to call roadside assistance myself rather than relying on  a stranger to stop and offer assistance.   I use it  for meeting people from online so I am not having to give out traceable info ... when arranging a meet  we exchange cell phone numbers so incase one party is running late due to traffic or car problems  there is no misunderstandings of being stood up  or can be used to give directions if one party finds themselves lost.  ... if I am travelling past family or friends  homes I can phone first to see if they are up for a visit rather than just popping in .  My phone also substitutes as  my address book .  Rarely is my cell  phone left on .. other than if I am expecting a call

I have a grown son, and he can call me anytime he wants where ever he is and I will be there to give him a ride, take him to the doctor... etc. I have a mom I would do the same for. I have my Daddy that I would do the same for. If he wouldn't do it for me he wouldn't be my Daddy. Now mind you, I would never abuse it, but if he was unwilling to be there for me if he could be, what the Hell am I involved with him for?

As far as everything else, I need my phone for business purposes. I am always getting important calls these days.

I don't have a landline. Don't want one (makes it harder for those damned telemarketers etc to find me...).  I don't have a problem being reachable by my friends and family. They know they can call any time, and I'll do what I can to help them out.  They also know that (usually) I turn the ringer off before I sleep.

I would be lost with out my cell phone. I don't need a landline. I have let strangers use it to call for Triple A or family or friends because they needed help. I have called 911 to help people in need. You never know when an emergency can happen.

There was a time when I felt the way you do, Termy, but I like my cell phone now.  Probably the most regular call I get is from my brother 1000 miles away, who likes to stay in touch.  Quirks of fate have him heading home from his last class at the same time I'm on the freeway.  It's nice.

I can stand in the aisle of the grocery store, while my wife checks the pantry for which chili ingredient we are out of, or gives me the inventory of the liquor cabinet.  The thing also works as a camera, and records video and audio.  Not a bad little package, and since it makes long-distance charges a thing of the past, I know exactly what the land-line bill is going to be every month.

Time to get with the 21st Century.

Cell phones irritate me to the extent that people use them while they drive, and people are constantly on them every where you go and you have no choice but to hear everyone's conversation ie., in the grocery store etc.

I do have a cell phone myself but am hardly ever on it.  I frequently travel from South Jersey to North Jersey and if I ever break down on my two hour long drive I feel secure knowing that I can call AAA and not have to sit there and wait for a cop.  Also I have a teenager, and that's the most important reason why I wouldn't be without it.   She's got hers, I have mine, and I can reach her no matter what, no matter where, and she can contact me if she is ever in need when away from home.  Did we survive without them when we were kids?  Yes.  But if there's technology available now, I can't see any good reason to not have it, unless someone couldn't afford it or something of that nature.

I have friends and family all over the US. I have free long distance on my cell phone as well as a corporate discount on the bill. I would not have a deal like that on a land line.  My mother and father are both in poor health and if they need me I want to be reachable no matter here I am.  I will not have idle chit chat on my cell, i am not a phone person. I will talk 10-15 minutes on a conversation on occasion, but thats rare. For me, its a great thing.
But I am also determined never to be one of those people, the ones who act as if i am inconveniencing them asking them for information to complete their transactions at work. I do think people have gone overboard with their phones.

I have a smart phone,( damned thing is smarter than me), after four years of using it, I have recently gone back to an old obsolete cell phone, which is just a phone, so no internet, voice recorder, conference calls, still camera or video. I just got fed up with the thing.

I always wonder what is wrong with someone over hearing a cellphone conversation, but these same people have conversations with others in public all the time. Why is it rude to talk on a cell phone, but it is not rude to talk to someone walking besides you? Both conversations can be overheard

OK, I read it.

I got a 4WD, twenty feet of STRONG chain (have to get that from the closet though), an air compressor and tanks, as well as mobile air compressors. I have some tires out back and a case of oil and a few gas cans. I have a FULL set of tools and if you want to get down to it, two lathes and a vertical milling machine, as well as various grinders, not to mention the fluxcore MIG welder.

Do you see what all these things have in common ? They are at my house.

So if you get a flat, I can be there with air and at least one good fix-a-flat, or maybe a tire if you bought the right kind of car ( a GM). I have extra vehicles with charged batteries so if your alternator quits, a battery with a nice hot charge will get you home usually. All those things are here.

If you call me at work, unless you are immediate family I am not leaving work. Is that harsh ? Is that mean ?

Heaven forbid if we take to expecting people who go out driving around to know what to do in case of a breakdown. My my how did the human race survive ?

In the old days, the lug wrench was big enough that Dr Ruth could step on it and get it loose. Also, I've known a couple of hillbillies who would just drive on a flat. Really, if you are on the highway and get a flat, I do not mean a blowout, just a simple flat, a leak, you usually don't know it until you slow down. I did exactly that in FL, windows open, someone yelled "You got a flat" and I said "Thanks". There was a slight pull but the rubber was apparently holding it up.

Don't do that on city streets though, I did once and because it was a steel belted radial, it severed my brake line. However I was not on the highway.

I had a cellphone for about ten years, and I admit that one time I had a good use for it. I called my buddy in Orlando from the road from Columbia SC, and we arrainged a meet, because he said I would never find my way around right away. He was right. He said "Exit 342 (or whatever), you see the Shell station on the right ? meet me there".

That was the one time.

I am serious though, if you lose all your tranny fluid, most likely a line broke to the cooler, you can jump that out temporarily, and I have the tools as well as the materials to do it, but they are at home.

Do you expect me to ride around with all this all the time or what ? I will help, but there are limits. Forget it if I am not home, and forget it you call me from out of state.

My Mother (67), Father (69) and sister all have cellphones on the family plan, I do not. The Parents are old so they need one, the sister is a girl so OK. I do not need one.

The last two years I had a cellphone, it was off unless I wanted to make a call.

Imagine no freeway,
no cars no bars,
Imagine no congestion,
I wonder if you can

Imagine no cellphones,
disturbing you in peace,
Woo hoo ooo oo oooo,

Imagine there are no ipods,
No bluetooth from the sky,
Imagine there are no sitcoms,
And people wonder why

Imagine no possesions,
You have none anyway,
ay ay ay hey ay,

Some may say I'm a screamer,
But I'm not the only one,
I hope someday you will join us,
And life might just be some fun

For the musically challenged that relates to John Lennon, Imagine.

That peace you seek, it comes from within.

In the old days when we broke down we had to wait for long periods of time for someone to see us or to be willing to stop for us and agree to call help for us. And sometimes people have died if it was very cold or very hot or if they had an accident and could not be found and were pinned in the car.

In the old days women were very vulnerable on the side of the road if they broke down... and some of them have been raped or worse as a result of car trouble.

National Do Not Call List for cell phones. 888-382-1222  It takes less then 3 minutes & blocks telemarketers from calling.

julia, agreed. People did die, but of all the breakdowns it wasn't that many.

Now if you are talking about psychopaths running around, that is a manifestation of populated areas. Your odds back then were way better than they are now. What's more in the old days someone was likely to know where you were going, like shopping, they know where the store is and if you don't come back in a reasonable amount of time kith and kin go out looking for you.

Maybe that's one thing that helped those poor people survive in their paid off cars, that and being able to walk a mile in a snowstorm, things like that. All before they invented this necessity which I neither have nor even want.

Such a wonder that we are alive today, or wait, we better check. Quick, call your congressman and get them to put a rider on HR1424, say a billion bucks, to run a study to find out for sure if the US population is really alive.
