i never understand something like this..right, he's saying he's an american, and he is, he said nothing about any other person on north america/south america, or their "american" status, however, its fairly common that when people, even from other countries, say "the american" speaking of someone, it is assumed that that means they are from the united states. i have some canadian friends, and they call me an american, i remind them they are too, and they become offended! you see how, although it may not be true geographically, in general speach, for most people, when someone says they are american, they mean from the united states. do you also get upset when people say, "i'm black" because they aren't actually black, they are actually brown? this just seems like a silly thing to get hung up on
