I've linked to photojournalist Michael Yon's site before, in reference to events in Iraq, but I hadn't visited in a while.  He's now in Afghanistan, both imbedding with the armed forces, and wandering off when he sees something interesting.  There are three very different pieces on the front page;  a view from above of life in the countryside, the faces and sights of the marketplace, and the final installment from a longer piece on British forces.

Lots of pictures, it might take a while to load for anybody on dial-up, but worth a look and read.

I very good series of photo essays.

The long photo essay on his time with the British troops was very interesting and unfortunately depressing.
quote:

Living with British troops of 2 Para at FOB Gibraltar and watching them fight, I witnessed one of the great paradoxes of Afghanistan.  The troops are fighting hard and killing the enemy.  They are professional and extremely competent.  Their morale is high.  They are doing a great job.  And we are losing the war.

Fascinating, informative, poignant.
