quote:
ORIGINAL: TheHeretic "This is not a man who sees America like you and I see America," she said. "We see America as a force of good in this world. We see an America of exceptionalism." And this is where I see one of the biggest problems - this implied sense of a right way and a wrong way to be, speak and do with the accompanying idea that unless one is, speaks and does as I do then one is somehow against the nation. And more than that, this rather cynical and transparent ploy to encourage support not because of weight of argument or great policy ideas or supreme qualification for office but by appealing to a sense of common national identity which simply doesnt seem to exist and is as elusive to define as "Christian values". "Come on - you're one of us, arent you?". And this wilful ignorance of quite why so much of the rest of the world has over this last eight years grown at best suspicious but in the main hostile towards the US, and worse still the total lack of interest in or even acknowledgement of that fact, based on the utter conviction that right and good reside exclusively in the US, is really quite troubling on its own account, let alone in combination with the "with us or against us" and obligation to prove oneself one way or the other of the first two paragraphs. Its time for some serious change in foreign policy, a more reasoned approach by which the US might regain some of the respect it has lost overseas - and by that same mechanism for many of its inhabitants to break away from the dualistic and simplistic mindset that has been preached to them from the Whitehouse for two terms - a mindset which is certainly believed to be present given the appeal of the above quote.
