WildHoneyPie -> Kink Aware Professionals (10/5/2008 7:01:49 PM)

I'm looking for an MD who is open minded to kink.  Looked at the Kink Aware professionals site and couldn't find one in my area.  Any other referral sites similar that anyone knows of?

If you know local people in the community maybe you could try asking them?  Other than that I haven't a clue.

The KAP list rocks -- it's a shame there aren't more professionals listed... but finding a good doc is not a lost cause. I've found that most docs are pretty open minded. I was -really- straightforward with all of my docs, particularly because of my underlying health issues and medications -- some of the things I might want to do are impacted by my overall health (like having to wait on a tattoo until an underlying autoimmune flare is resolved).

If your doctor -isn't- willing to work with you and take what you tell hir in stride, interview other docs. There are a lot of really good, really open-minded doctors who either don't know that they -can- put their name on a KAP list, or won't because they're uncomfortable about the appearance of publicly supporting something that could cause a legal issue and jeopardize their license.

My docs aren't listed -- but for me they put up with alternative medicine, body mod, my poly partners, spiritual/religious ambiguity (yes, even in the Bible Belt), cleaning up my needle nicks from mis-guided self-piercings, and making sure the sites where I test my new branding pens and scalpels don't develop secondary issues due to my (genetic) immune system mis-wiring. I've also talked to them about whether meds I'm on will have an impact on things like impact play, or cause me to bleed more freely or react with tattoo ink. I've even had my doc help out when I did a fetish scene with strategically placed lizards and one took a chunk out of my inner thigh.

Don't discount the doc you have -- and if you -are- searching, run some questions by the docs you're interviewing. Chances are, most of them will take things in stride... and if you're planning -extreme- stuff (amputation, severe battering including broken facial or body bones, etc.), be aware that -any- doctor is required to report domestic violence or communicable disease... so a doc who would feel compelled to report 'super edge' stuff isn't necessarily going to be ruled out, because even a KAP is likely to come up against legal requirements -and- most of the folks, even those who are kink-aware and even kink-active, may -still- reach a point where they may be uncomfortable with something going on -- so encourage hir to talk to -you- BEFORE xhe runs to the cops, even if xhe's freaked. I got mine to do that, and it's saved us a couple of hairy sessions of explaining stuff to the cops (at best) or DA (at worst).

Any doctor has seen it all while doing internships in the E.R. They have all, for example, had guys come in with things inserted in the butt that can't be removed. They know about everything. If you find that yours has moral objections to you having sex the way you like, ask them for a recommendation of a good one who is less narrow minded. But them knowing you do this could be helpful in case you do wind up at the ER. That way when you keep saying it's consensual, it will be backed up by his records.

Or ask the local LBGTQ association if they keep a list of alt sex friendly doctors.

I used to be listed on the KAP list.  I took my name off when I was going through the divorce and the nastiness that followed and have never gone back and put myself on.

I would also suggest...as someone else has...that you either ask people in the local BDSM community or just be straightforward with your doctor, once you find one that you can really trust.  Most of us are pretty understanding, though there are a few who can't seem to keep from imposing their out-of-office moral code on their patients...something that, though it is hard since we are human, we are not supposed to do.  Otherwise, we'd be turning away patients right and left.

Hi, WildHoneyPie----
Here are a few suggestions:
**If there's not someone local on the NCSF KAP page, e-mail NCSF and ask for suggestions
**Contact local 'lifestyle' oriented businesses and ask if anyone there would recommend anyone
**The GLBT community often has lots of resources;more thanany other 'alt' community of which I am aware
**Contact your local D/s yahoo groups and/or meet up and/or those sort of social networking options and ask for recommendations
Good luck!  :>

Thanks, all, for your suggestions.  I do like my current md.  He's very effective and kind, and the most soft-spoken, mild-mannered guy imaginable.  that  has made me a bit reluctant to be open with him.  i don't think he'd be closed minded, it's just that i like the idea of a doc who identifies with members of the bdsm community.  i'm not outwardly involved with the community, my kink life is very private.  It would be nice to have this area of my life be more open.  so far, knock wood, i haven't had any medical issues related to kink arise, but you never know, and it would be nice to know that my doctor would not judge me if they did.

Hm... one way to test out your current doc might be, at your next appointment, "I ran across this article about (whatever topic on BDSM inserted here) and I wondered about (insert related health risk & the "article's" suggested management here).  What do you think about that? Is that even safe?"

If he responds comfortably and/or respectfully, you may feel more comfortable and not have to change docs.  That might be a good way to test the waters without committing yourself to anything.  And it sure beats "I have this friend", because that's cliched by now, and EVERYONE knows the Intarwebs can haz full of crayzie nao kthxbai, so it makes a convenient springboard for such conversations.

Hope that helps. If you otherwise like your MD, it would be cool if you could stay with him.

You could smack him a good one. If he turns the other cheek then he's okay..If he turns you over then he's okay but if he turns you in..Time to get another doc.

If it's a she and she turns the other cheek..Let me know will'ya?
