Stock markets round the world have plunged by 5-6% today - Russia suspended its stock market twice after falls of 19%. Iceland meanwhile - the country and its currency, is teetering on the precipice.

What price stability? ($700 billion is not enough)

Meanwhile the former CEO of Lehman Bros told a senate committee that he would have done it all differently if he could turn back time, and rejected that he had been overpaid at $500 million for his term - it was only $260 million after all.

And here I was, just bummed that I had to come back to work at Ye Ole Printshop today......

FTSE down to lowest level since 1987; 93 billion pounds wiped off the value of the market (or rather, our savings and investments). Anyone who remembers 1987 in the UK will be somewhat concerned. A newly appointed minister is currently considering part nationalising the entire UK bank sector - but this is now not just about banking and financials - its into the stock market now too.

Iceland's currency lost a third of its value in one day today; since Iceland has to import so much stuff, thats a huge increase in cost of living in one fell swoop. Its has had to suspend share trading in financials as of today. An entire western country - albeit one with a small population - undermined, and its people - who have lived well - suffering an enormous loss in standard of living overnight.

I think it might just be time for a trip to Birmingham to convert some cash into gold, whilst the cash is still worth something. And time to start hoarding tinned food and drink.

Having a bit of gold in a portfolio is always a good idea.  The governments of the world are at the initial stages of a major printing of money.  Thinking of those pictures of Germany in the early 1920's we should probably be investing in wheelbarrel companies, dust off those old copies of Mien Kampf and Das Kapital, and maybe buy a gun if you don't have one already.

Charming. Should Jews, homosexuals and other deviants go into hiding, too?

Oh KS - now that is just totally ridiculous

Everyone knows this must have something to do with the Muslims.

If one has cash, and doesn't want to enter the markets, there are things that won't lose their value and no matter what the price is will have a constant benefit.

If you have your own residence and have the room, and live in a country with good alternative energy rebates. Well, solar or wind power are a good investment. Payback can be 10 years though, but solar for example lasts over 20 years, not a bad deal really, and the payback is proportional to whatever the cost of electricity is, so even if the currency goes to shit, it doesn't matter. You'd be offseting whatever that cost is.

Even if you don't have the money to layout for a full out solar system or wind based system. The easiest and probably the cheapest solar based enhancement is a solar waterheater, still it does require owning your own residence, but that can be done by yourself. Stuff like trombe walls, can be installed, by a non-carpenter, fairly cheaply and simply enough. Apartment dwellers have much less options, but those things are like an investment in gold, as there value is immune to inflation.

Unless someone solves the energy crisis in the next 10 years it's a sure winner for the conservative investor. Especially if you do the installation yourself. That is a large part of the cost of those kind of things.

Yes please. Are you offering?

Raechard -> RE: another great day at the office (10/6/2008 2:00:17 PM)

Buy silicon, gold for electronics. When you buy these equities do you ever own them? I mean speculators buy oil no matter how much of it there is and you kind of wonder what a receipt for oil is worth when there isn't any ?

It's wonderful that some people can make dough out of financial crisis. It shows that the crisis isn't so bad for everybody after all [&o] .
