Yet try an make a slur against an issue I am passionate about and then we will see how fearful I am.

Bear, would you hold it against me if I told you that this statement made me feel strangely aroused?  [8D]

Signed,
Redheaded Valkyrie, who is also not afraid to speak her mind about things of a passionate nature  [sm=preen.gif]

~FR~

I'd like to extend my apology to sunshine for my actions in getting off topic. It probably wasn't what she expected nor what she intended by her post. Again my apologies sunshine.

OK. You're incorrect.  Look at India, South Africa, Brazil, etc.  There ya' go!

Blaakmaan...you see where this post is? "Polls and Other Random Stupidity"? Maybe it's just me, but I don't think this topic was meant to be taken all that seriously...
Now I'm off to visit Causasia, land of the Causasians! Where everyone's named Doug and the national food is Wonderbread!

Good point!  I'm out!

Daddysredhead -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 7:58:51 PM)

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 7:59:32 PM)

My mother's parents came from Norway.  On my father's side, my sister has traced us back to the Mayflower.  So I generally consider myself  Norwegian-American, since half of me is Norwegian & the other half  is American.  I am also a very, very white girl.  I also wonder about this mythical place called Caucasia.  When I fill in ethnicity on a form, i shudder as I check "Causcasian", because it has no meaning to me.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Ethnicity (10/6/2008 8:07:55 PM)

My mom's side is German and Dutch.  My dad's side is German and English.  I just say I'm white.  When I lived overseas, my nieces and nephews there called me "White Auntie" in their native language, which I found very endearing.

Very much incorrect.  Nice movie out several years ago called Mississippi Masala that showed how other countries can be every bit as stupid about race, ethnicity, skin color, etc. as the US... and some of those places would have to move ahead light years to catch up with America.

This was a good movie, but if you watch most Hindi films made in India, they are about people trying to overcome the caste system.  It's more than race in many of the countries in the Indian subcontinent and in the Middle East, it's about marrying in your same socio-economic class.

Mississippi Masala was about Ugandans, and showed their racial cultural biases.
There was another very interesting movie in the bollywood vein just called 'Masala' about Indian immigrants facing Canadian biases.

MadAxeman -> RE: Ethnicity (10/7/2008 6:16:19 AM)

I'm English, almost transparent white and my family can be traced back many generations. I also have black relatives via marriage and the younger ones call me nword...and I kind of like that. Can I get any molestication for this post?

Not to be argumentative, but I own the movie and this is right from the movie's website:

Plot summary for
Mississippi Masala (1991)
An Indian family is expelled from Uganda when Idi Amin takes power. They move to Mississippi and time passes. The Indian daughter falls in love with a black man, and the respective families have to come to terms with it.

Starring Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury.
