I have a new car. It's everything I wanted and more. But I have had two new cars in the last 3 years and I was driven to madness by morons scratching the paintwork, on one occaision some article ran a chisel the length of my last new car, right down to the metal. It cost a fortune to get it touched up.
I did everything I could, watched it until my eyes dried up, put the evil eye on anyone I saw near it, nearly had a bloody nervous breakdown.
This car has not been touched. I took one of those damn near disposable key ring digital cameras, the ones that may last a kid five minutes, propped it up on some books in my living room window opposite the car and left a bright yellow post it note in the car window. It reads, Webcam watching car, look behind you.
I have seen at least six teenagers look around and jump when they spot it.
Not a scratch, and it cost me nothing, last car I had was looking like a game of noughts and crosses by now.
I'm a much happier bunny. It might work for you.

what are you doing to your neighbors to make them want to damage your car?

When I was a young hoodlum, I would have considered that a challenge.  Honestly, your're asking for trouble when you do things like that.  The kids can just show back up at night with masks on, hammers and awls in hand.

When I lived in a city, I found the best defense was to drive a POS that already had scratches on it.  When I was in the Navy, I drove a plain white Ranger with no frills.  I installed a 30 dollar radio that wasn't worth the time to steal.  This tactic has always seemed to work.

they'll just wear a hood and mask and come back....if they get pissed off when they see it.  so its not a guarentee.

It would be cheaper in the long run and way less stress to  buy a beater .If you want the  nice ride  pay to store it .

I've got to agree.  When I was a teenager your warning only would have spurred me on further.  Even though I have never keyed a car in my life I probably would have..it's sort of an invite.

I've also never had a car of mine keyed..so what exactly are you doing to get it keyed so often?

Garage it.  No reason to have a heart attack over a car.

You know what's a good deterrent? Profoundly disturbing psychological warfare! Dress up like a cowboy and drive around places where young people hang out with a huge grin on your face. Then occassionally pull over, look at some punk kid, and laugh as hard as you can. If they actually say anything to you after that, say the craziest shit that comes to mind and end it with "MUTHA FUCKA! YEE-HAW!".
And if you really wanna go the extra mile, make a cardboard cutout of yourself smiling psychotically and holding a shotgun, stick it in the window of your living room, and leave the curtains open just enough for people to see the face of this grinning maniac peeking through.

I drive a plain, white Nissan pickup now.  It's 10 years old and has no radio.  It's the base model, and it the only option in it is the air conditioner.  I kept meaning to do what you did and install a radio it it.  But I was being lazy and I never did it.  I have not had a car stereo for 7 years now, and I am just used to it now.  When I occassionally drive someone else's car, I will turn the radio on for a few minutes than turn it off.  It annoys me now.  I'd rather roll the windows down and listen to the streets.  An interesting coincidence since I started driving without a radio....I haven't had a ticket for a moving violation since 2001.  I've never had my truck fucked with.  Hell I don't think twice about parking it unlocked with the windows down and going into a store.

Never had this problem. Perhaps you need to appear more violent & unpredictable or move.

There was a spate of this not far from me until about a week ago - kids would come and slash tyres, smash windows and scratch cars.

Then last week one guy spotted the likely culprits and confronted them; he was stabbed and killed for his trouble.

And this in the country with more CCTV than any other in the world.

Back in the 1700 to 1800's, before the invention of the automobile, common people used to throw horse and dog shit at the wealthy, who would drive by in their beautiful carriages. It's really simple: buy a car that doesn't scream "fuck you" to all your neighbors.

Here in my home town, we have one guy who lives along a main road... beautiful house, and has a big ol' H2 parked in front. According to the local cops, he's the one who gets all the vandals. The truck gets keyed on a regular basis, and his house is the main target in town at Halloween.

Good luck with your car... maybe you should just build a garage?

the 1st dent is always the hardest.

i have to say- i get mad when a car takes 2 parking spaces.

i drive older cars.  and it IS true- an older car doesnt attract the dings.

a neighbor here is too picky on their cars.

i dont pay much attention. they live there and i live here.

I have a secret weapon - a parking space at the back of the house out of sight!

That's life... Some people hate it when others have nicer things than them. What I do is park all the way out in the back of the lot away from everyone else.

Fuck being a teenager. I'm on my way to their house right now to foil their webcam.

There`s a special place in hell for car-scratchers.

Right next to the jerks who make computer viruses.

:D I drive a beater... someone already stole the stereo, so no worries about that, the bed of the truck is all mashed on the left side from a wreck, and the paint in the bed is torn up from toteing around stupid things like welding tanks and hospital equipment.I don't stress about it at all... my little brother hit it the other day with my mothers van... and I'm happy to be able to shrug it off.
