What does it have to do with the US? Only Obama knows!

...seriously Merc? You don't know what child labour laws have to do with the USA?

~FR~

Seriously guys, what does any of it have to do with the actual OP? $85 billion dollars and then the execs go for a week at the spa, remember?

kittinSol -> RE: AIG takes the $ and runs to luxury spa (10/7/2008 2:33:05 PM)

You're right, Celeste - a joke led to a hijack. Please forgive us. Back on topic!

BitaTruble -> RE: AIG takes the $ and runs to luxury spa (10/7/2008 2:35:20 PM)

So, if $85 billion leads to a $440,000 week long vacation ... um.. I mean conference at a fancy resort, how long do we get to go for $700 billion? A couple of months, maybe?

My insight is that I have worked at both the ILO, WIPO, and the UN. These agencies are run by lawyers, especially the first two. These lawyers are, for a large majority, American citizens, trained in America, in American universities.

Secondly, it is you who made a completely goofy link between Obama's supposed plan to go on a spending spree to 'help poor nations' and the ILO and labor laws. I therefore ask that you justify this insight of yours, since you seem to know more than anybody else does when it comes to that money. It looks as though you don't know the work of the ILO, as you made an erroneous link 'child labor=poor nation'. These laws protect minors throughout the world, and industrialized western nations too have child labor concerns and have signed those treaties. Unbelievable, isn't it?

Thirdly, you didn't 'point facts', as seen above. Therefore, I have no question to answer, as you haven't asked any, but rather made some eccentric claims that have not an ounce of weight to them.

Edited for a spelling.

You haven't identified by name or with backup ANY UN agency under USA administration. "These agencies" "run by lawyers" is the kind of non-answer I expected.
"Goofy link"? It's Obama's link. However, I agree - $50 Billion to the UN is "goofy".

How are those International laws and the ILO, WIPO working in China or Southeast Asia in general? Or is it you position that it is now fine to buy goods made produced by these countries because through UN intervention and the ILO all the children are now in schools singing the praises of the US money being spent on their behalf through the UN?

How are those laws you deem so effective working? And where in the "industrialized western nations" is child labor employed and in need of ILO supervision by the UN?

Amaze me with your insight and your represented experience working for these agencies what good they are doing, have done, or plan on doing in China - a member of the UN security counsel? Or do you deem your attention only worthy when it comes to the US and spending US taxpayer money?

kittinSol -> RE: AIG takes the $ and runs to luxury spa (10/7/2008 2:38:40 PM)

Well, the equivalent of the population of a small country could live like Kings and Queens on a sumptuous beach in Thailand for that much money. It all depends on where you choose to spend it, doesn't it... it's so nouveau riche to spend tons of cash for a conference at a "fancy" hotel. So lacking in class, don't you think? They should have gone hiking in high altitudes, just to freshen up their grey matter a little, with a couples of weeks' stay at a rustic chalet, with sleeping bags and dried goat meat.

kittinSol -> RE: AIG takes the $ and runs to luxury spa (10/7/2008 2:41:13 PM)

Sorry, Celeste *sigh*. Merc, you are wrong, completely off the mark, and what's more, off topic. Hijack over.

I didn't bring up child labor. I brought up the promised made by the Senator go give $50 Billion to the UN.

To bring it back to the OP - When we've just spent $700 Billion to pay for the spa treatment - I don't think it appropriate to be promising $50 Billion more for the UN to attend spas throughout the world in the name of doing research on the problem of child labor. Especially when the biggest culprit is sitting on the Security Counsel.

My apologies Bita - for responding out of context.

Folks, drop the child labor discussion please.  All involved parties should really know better by now.

I can relate to your incredulity, but I just can't get excited about these things, anymore. It's a toleration of exhaustion rather than apathy, because the individual simply can't rein in this saddleless horse.

One week after AIG's $85 billion dollar bailout, the execs run down to a luxury spa to have a conference and 'calm down' to the tune of almost half a million dollars including $20,000+ spent on the golf course and in the spa getting massages, manicures and pedicures.

Must be tough hauling around all that free money.

Man, I feel for those guys .. I really do.

AIG luxury spa trip

I've included a link but actually heard about this while watching the congressional hearings.

We should ALL feel for them..using our hands around their necks!

For some reason I keep thinking while they were at the spa, they had
to say a few things like "Let them eat cake!".

At least a couple months and the entire CM population should show up to supervise, the damned fools probably will forget their own whips and chains.

Not to worry.

I just saw the Congressional hearing with two former AIG CEO's.

Congress gave them a good scolding and they promised they'll never, never, ever do anything like that again.

Problem solved.
