Umm.. Just my 2 cents.. SI in itself isn't bad.. Neither is "related" play. But depending on the reason you're SI'ing it COULD be... I won't go into specifics here but.. If you're doing SI for the typical reasons, I would NOT suggest using "related play" as a substitute. There are a number od safe and healthy alternatives to SI, but I'm sure you've been told.

I think he means self-injury. A "cutter" or someone who inentionally marks themselves with cuts, burns, hairpulling, skin picking, etc as a coping mechanism.

Beign as i have recenly started cutting, knife play is somethign i am avooiding at the moment for the shear fact, that when i can handle not cutting myself, then in play i may be able to handle other cutting me.

If you have only recently started cutting please please get into therapy (and talk about it)? Seriously... i cut (and burned) for years.... and ultimately left areas of my body permanently scarred ... i regret it terribly...

If you must hurt.... here are some alternatives (that will not scar.. or leave you accidently hospitalized):

1. Ice. Take an icecube out of the freezer and hold it in your hand. Don't wrap the icecube in anything.. just the ice straight against your skin (or you can hold it to your wrist or thigh or whatever area you usually cut).. the ice will leave an uncomfortable kind of burn...

It's true extreme cold can damage skin but an icecube or two does not carry level of "cold-ness". And with ice you won't leave scars... and you won't accidently cut too deep...

2. Wax. Light and melt a "tea candle" (those little candles that come inside a little "circle" tin?). Blow out the flame... and then drip the wax on your skin (wherever you like to feel pain). Tea candles work well because the wax can pool all inside the tin and it stays melted for awhile (even with the flame blown out) so you don't have to rush. It's true that wax can "burn" skin... but it is far less likely to scar than cutting... and of course you aren't going to accidently kill yourself with candle wax.

3. Cold showers. Turn on the shower as cold as possible. Get naked and get in. This won't "hurt" but sometimes the "shock" of the cold is very good at clearing ... "moods" where you might want to cut.

Anyway... all those ways were suggested to me by a therapist... and even if they might not work for you i thought i'd offer the advice. i'm not a therapist myself (so don't take my advice as "professional")... i just don't want to see someone else have the kind of regret that i now have... over cutting themself...

~i hope whatever it is that brings you to cut.... improves...

Hi LuckyA,
Question: How do you do it? How can you remember where all these threads are and put them up as a link so quickly? That just amazes me.

You might also try using a red pen or sharpie.. (marker). Depending on the reaon you're cutting the red pen will often help

Hi LuckyA,

A few things:

I'm very good at finding things. I tease my friends about my stalker qualities. Research and connective memory is one of my strong points. So, when someone brings up a topic that we discussed 3 months ago, it pings in my head very quickly.

Secondly, when you've been posting to online bdsm forums as avidly and long as I have, you get to know the patterns. There are about 2 dozen topics that come up all the time. So finding those topics again become even quicker.

Also because of the repetition of topics, my brain begins to store "essays" in my head. So when someone next brings up the topic of "how do I tell my master I really DONT orgasm like that" I just pull the file in my head, dust off and modify the essay that I've already written about 6 times and post. This is actually a good thing for me. It means that my ideas are constantly being revisited, chewed over again and given an opportunity for revision.

Finally, because I've been pulling links for awhile, I actually already HAVE posts that have tons of links on them, so I can just relink them.

Okay, this is a serious issue. Let's not confuse issues. Knife play in most cases does not even include breaking of the skin. People use it to get the rush of the fear of being cut, without real harm happening. The thought of cold steel against the skin can really enhance the helpless feeling, especially if combined with bondage. Those who enjoy actually being cut tend to use things like surgical blades in a well thought out scene often with some desired result, like scaring of Master's Mark upon them or some other design, not simply for the thrill of being cut.

Cutting is a whole other matter that comes from issues it sounds like you are already dealing with. It is not uncomon for cutters to use masochistic SM activities to substitute for this need in a more healthy manner, but rarely do they do so in a way that is damaging to themselves like cutting is. Please do not confuse the two and continue to get help with the cutting issue. It would be well advised that any Doms you play with are fully aware of the cutting issue as well.

Be safe and good luck to you.
