winterlight -> Whom would u like to see win the Presidency? What do you think we need to do to fix the mess that is (10/8/2008 12:04:18 AM)

going on right now? For me i would love to see everybody out of the House and Senate. Special interest has taken over. I would like to see somebody better fixing this mess. It starts with us of course. I would like to see term limits.

What do you think?

I think term limits are a great idea.  It keeps coming up but there is no way the Congress is going to push through legislation that would be "self-liquidating".  Gerrymandering has put too many House seats into incumbant safe, powerful zones, and tremendous power based solely on seniority rather than qualifications.  It's the Peter Principle times 100.    Even with a 10% popularity, it would take a major quake...maybe like what we are going through these days in the financial system, to get voters to vote NO to the status quo...but I'm not counting on it.

I do think a better system needs to be put in replace in regards to what federally elected and even appointed officials can do after office, and or term limits.

One possibility, is to ban any member of congress, president, etc... taking any private job, or investing after there term in office is up for a period of 10 years, they'd simply be banned from working or participating in investments anywhere. Now, they'd have to be paid something like 80% of normal in office pay, I don't particular care to pay people to sit on their ass, but at least that would dilute their influence after office, and make offers of cushy jobs afterwards less appealing, and you'd have to force them to liquidate all investment assets before beginning their term. So, no-private anything for term plus ten years.

Term limits by themselves don't address the lucrative after office benefits these guys get. So, while term limits would be an improvement, I don't think it would solve the problem. A method of disconnecting personal interest from the office held, needs to be formulated.

Glad to see you've subjected this to such careful analysis.

We ar too far to the left and too far to the right.  We need someone who is not involved in the oil business and one who has not been in the Senate for 26 years.
I am voting democrat to demolish the Repulican rule that has destroyed us.

Bob Barr for president.
Picture of Obama, Biden, Reed and Pelosi celebrating and congratulataing each other after passing just an another legislation 90% of Americans oppose is scary.
(It just happened with Bush, Palosi Paulson, Reed and co.).

throw the bums out.  Yeah- that 'victory" stunk.

I dont think the depression can last.  Americans dont have the attention span for it to last any long period of time.

What do I think?

You can replace all the bums in Congress, but without structual change, we'd be right back to where we started in no time.

Ron Paul by a longshot.  And yeah, this comes from a Canadian, but I know more about American politics than 90% of Americans, and I've only been taking note for a year or so.  Ron Paul was your chance, sorry to say.

Will this website stay up when the US goes bankrupt, gets bought up or invaded by China, and/or receives some nukes from all its enemies?  Or will it be sold off too?  I hope so, cuz then I can keep browsing for subbies.  Not that it works, but it's kinda fun.  :D

Federal Election Commission <-- shows the donation received by Ron Paul from Don Black

In case you didn't know, Don Black is the website owner of Stormfront, a neo-nazi org which supports Ron Paul for president. Paul accepted a $500 campaign donation from Black and didn't return it. Pauls reasoning was that he could put the money to better use than Don Black. WTF? Ron Paul is simply not electable because most Americans rather frown on Nazi's and those affiliated with Nazi organizations.

I'd rather this country go belly up then be headed up by a neo-nazi. He's blatantly racist, isolationist, wants to do away with income tax so he can raise sales tax, puts absolutely no restrictions at all on free trade (in order to trade with our enemies than actually have things like sanctions be legal.. what a surprise!) and is all about the rich getting richer.

Here's a pic of Ron Paul posing with Stormfront owner Don Black

As for 'all' our enemies hitting us with nukes .. I wasn't aware that all our enemies had nuclear capabilities much less actual WMD's or that they could reach American soil. It's all good though .. we have plenty of duct tape. So, what's the scoop up there? Are you worried about fall-out or something?

Bill Clinton should be brought back, he was good and he was fun.

Aneirin -> RE: Whom would u like to see win the Presidency? What do you think we need to do to fix the mess tha (10/9/2008 3:50:06 AM)

I suppose it would be better to find out what it will take to fix America, and then vote for the candidate that vows to do that, If someone wants to step into the breech to be leader of the country, then by the action of stepping into the breech, they should know, that if they fail, they get fired.

But really, who would want to be the leader of a country that is failing, I mean their position, all the flak they would get, and the knowledge that they can't please everyone all of the time. Is the illusion of power so attractive? A president might be the leader of the country, but I doubt they would have ultimate power to sort things out, there are too many other interests  that will act against the president. Perhaps a president is not the answer, but a open and transparent commitee.

Honesty is a hard thing to come by these days, and a word politicians either don't know, or have many meanings for, depending on the situation, none of them as defined by any dictionary.

Perhaps even a career politician is not the ideal person to put a country's faith in, why not just do a random search, grab a normal person, a normal US citizen, a teacher, an engineer, a fireman or whatever, chuck them in at the top, I am sure they would know a better definition of honesty and morality and what their role would be as the country's leader, they might even do a better job.

From reading the posts, we are all to blame for this mess.  We have lived in an easy job, easy credit situation for years, and now the s___ has hit the fan, and guess who is paying for it?
We are.
Get ready for the long ride.  It won't be a fun one either.
